[N!|93%|YAVP] Elite diamond
« on: August 22, 2012, 14:41 »

I was going for YAAM, but I couldn't kill the angel of death and I stopped being so fastidious about corpse disposal after that.  Also, I tried to clear the mortuary but got my arse handed to me and had to flee (first time trying it on N!), so that took a chunk out of my kill percentage.  I thought about going through the lava pits for explorer, but I didn't have any envirosuits and didn't fancy my chances, and it could have lost me the elite diamond by bringing my kill percentage down further.  I used the run-wait function a lot, for ambushing imps and formers up until the chained court, and for farming commandos for cells later on, but I find the game gets much more forgiving after the chained court, so I rely less on cheese after that point when playing N!.

I went scavenger since I find it the most interesting and rewarding master trait; you never know when you'll get that exotic mod you always wanted when you disassemble something.  I got a nanopack when I dissasembled the acid spitter I found in level 12, and used it for my A-modded antigrav boots (+60% move speed).  I got another +15% move speed from some duelist armour, though I never got an agility mod to slap on it (I'd already used 3 agility mods on some A-modded tactical boots earlier on).  I had a cerberus ballistic vest that I was hoping to get an onyx mod for, but it got destroyed in the mortuary and I never got an onyx mod.

I missed out on the mastermind's brain when my biggest fucking gun knocked it back into range of me and I got a burst of bullets from it.  I also missed out on finishing it off with my Grammaton Cleric Baretta since I didn't have any ammo for it.

Hmm... I'm trying to beat N! right now, and maybe scavenger isn't such a bad idea... I'll give it a shot when I get home.

I'm guessing that since you can't save on N!, he probably left DoomRL to do something else for some time. Since Ao100 can be done on N! in 3 hours, it's the most likely explanation.

I think I left it running over night, but since I was going for YAAM, I did spend quite a lot of time methodically hunting down monsters and disposing of their corpses by ambushing them in doorways or blowing them up with barrels, rockets, nuclear BFG 9000 and sometimes by standing in the middle of a pile of corpses and letting a cacodemon or imp hit me with a plasma/fire-ball.

I use that last method in combination with corpse stacking to make it through hell's arena on N!; sometimes I can't get the corpses to stack neatly, so I just stand amongst them and let a cacodemon take care of them for me.  Taking a plasma ball is often better than risking a bunch of corpses resurrecting at the wrong moment and getting mobbed from multiple directions, and I'll even take a blast from a hell baron if it means disposing of the other baron's corpse, as long as I have health and medkits to spare.

So far I've been avoiding Hell's Arena like a plague in my N! games, but I guess it is worth it for the rocket launcher... how much harder is is compared to UV?

Also, I'm still not comfortable with unchained court UV, no way I'd want to face the arena master on N!. Not yet, anyway. The chained court without AM is such a piece of cake even on N!...

Very much harder?  I can breeze through Hell's Arena without thinking about it much on UV, and with a scout and hellrunner 2, I can clear the arena, grab the loot and go down the stairs before the nuke blows on UV AoRA without too much trouble.  On N! I need a much more concrete strategy than 'corner shoot them all until they die', and I need to have more medkits for when corpse stacking doesn't go smoothly and I need to take a plasma ball to the face, despite the medkits healing double on N!.  I also need more shotgun shells since I'll be killing and re-killing and re-re-killing.  It's easier when the stairs to the arena appear on level 3 rather than level 2, and it's easier with shotgun scout builds where I have reloader 2 and +10% move speed, but I can do it fairly reliably now when the stairs appear on level 2 and I have a technician with son of a bitch 2 or something else that doesn't start shining until later in the game.

I use strategies like annoying demons and cacodemons with the shotgun at maximum range to draw them into a central location where I have a killing field, and when I leave my killing field to hunt for monsters, I keep an eye on the corpses; even when they're out of sight, the game still shows the corpses vanish when monsters resurrect, and when I see that happen, I know I have to go back and re-kill them before they wander too far off.  I try to pick a reasonably defensible location for the killing field, usually near to the upper or lower outer wall in the middle region of the arena, but often I get chased off by demons/cacodemons coming in from two sides or corpses resurrecting on one side of me while I'm dealing with monsters on the other side of me and I have to start a new killing field elsewhere.  When everything goes to plan, the corpses in the killing field will resurrect at a slow, manageable rate and I can gradually stack them on top of each other to dispose of them so that there's just a demon corpse or two left once the barons arrive, which I can sometimes stack on top of the barons as I kill them.  On UV I can just run around and kill everything without worrying about any of the above.

The rocket launcher is an essential piece of kit when I'm doing the chained court on N!; sometimes I can knock the barons into the lava with my shotgun or kill them in a doorway, but usually I need the rocket launcher to dispose of at least some of their corpses.  The rocket launcher also makes killing the arena master fairly doable; just hit him with a rocket every time he enters your field of vision and the knockback on him will give you time to reload and move a step or two, or even swap weapons and take out a former if you have juggler.  If you miss and he raises his arms, put some space between the two of you and try to avoid the blast; the move speed bonus from the berserk packs help with that, and the 60% fire resist makes it less painful if you do get caught.  I dispose of most of the formers in doorways before I face the arena master, so I don't get too many of them resurrecting while I'm fighting the arena master.  It doesn't always go to plan if the arena master makes an early appearance or my berserk packs get destroyed by the barons, but such is life.

So.. do you think it's worth it, to try and learn to do the Arena N!, or should I keep skipping it for now and get back to it later? Maybe it would be useful just to learn to corpse-stack better for levels without doors.

I dunno, I've rarely done Arena on N! and I'm slowly becoming convinced that it would help me a lot if I did.

There are a couple challenges where it isn't that helpful but that's about it.

I'd keep skipping it; the hell's arena -> CC -> wall & middle vault progression is nice if you can manage it, but none of it is terribly important to completing the game on N! and mostly just gives you more opportunities to get killed.  There isn't enough ammo to make regular use of the rocket launcher early on, since you need to conserve it for the arena master and the wall, and the missile launcher, backpack and middle vault are nice (although the middle vault often gives me bugger all), but you'll be fine without them.

Well, if I learnt to pass Hell's Arena, I'd definitely skip CC. I've actually managed to clear the Wall once now, and in any case if I'm lucky to find a rocket launcher, it's good to at least try it for some XP. It's not that hard to run away if things start to look bad.

Right now I've serious trouble with the Anomaly, namely the nightmare demons. I'll figure it out somehow.

I cleared the wall without taking any damage on that run, since I had a plasma rifle with plenty of cells (and EE/Son of a bitch/intuition) and could corner-shoot the barons and arch-villes one at a time before they reached me, while disposing of corpses with the rocket launcher.  I farmed a former commando for cells on the level just before the wall so that I'd have plenty; I think I had 40 rockets and 400 cells for it, plus 200 bullets and maybe a shell box.

For the anomaly, I prepared my escape route by destroying the door on the far end of the hallway with my plasma rifle and then rocket jumped my way past the ambush and right past the bruiser brothers.  Once I had the cover of the bruiser brother's guard post thingies, I took them out with my plasma rifle and then slowly started luring the nightmare beasties one by one to where I could kill them from cover, which was a bit difficult since I was running low on ammo by that point and I had to rely on rockets, which I just about had enough of to finish the job by using them carefully.  Another way I can clear the anomaly on N! is by using a double-barrelled shotgun and a shell box, running to the door and hosing everything with shotgun shells from a position of moderate cover while healing up with medkits as necessary.

Yeah, one of the reasons to do HA on N! is to get RL so you can rocketjump in Anomaly, because if you don't have phases and didn't invest in HR2 there's a great chance that you're screwed.

Hmm... I think I had RL every time I reached the Anomaly so far. I rocket jumped back and I'm used to, though, and the demons ate me everytime. (Well, once I had an invulnerability, that was nice).

I'll try your approach next time.

Skipping HA, there's no way to get Int 2 before the wall without trading it for much needed DPS, but it's not that hard if you find enough rockets beforehand.
