YASD - My first Technician...
« on: September 14, 2012, 10:37 »

Well, after four action hero-y types I though lets try something else. The Tech is a cool cat, that's for sure, but damn the beginning is tough. I will have to adept my style of play. I do like the interaction with terminals and the options to unlock security doors. That combined with the cheapness of the tech-skill and this might get interesting!

I played a master techician the other day. Most useful feats where multitooling into security doors, unlimited healing from red computer consoles and fixing elevators (with only three multitools - kraxftp!). I liked him, alas he was not very skilled with guns and rifles, and he met a horrible death during his attempted ascend in the colony.

How does one, by the way, take screenshots of post mortems in a easy way? F10 fails to deliver in post mortem (but works well when actually playing).

I also wonder why the colony and it's military storages is full of ancient weaponry. Like a, to us, modern military installation full of long rifles and flintlock guns :)

There's a mortem.txt file in the AliensRL directory that saves your latest post-mortem.

Must say that my Technician skills haven't really improved over the last days. Even though the mechanics are very cool, I might just stick with HW specialist because I actually survive way longer before getting shredded. If people have any play tips I am all ears!

You need some points in Sidearms / Light Weapons in order to survive. Take it to at least basic level.
Light Weapons may be even more important in this release, since 9mm pistol is a bit weakened, and there are dozens of FN SCARs lying everywhere, and 5.56 ammo as well.
Not to mention that some 9mm automatic weapons are quite decent as well.
Also, I usually drop a point (or two) in Medicine (to make medpacks more effective) and Fitness (faster, stronger, more valuable Inc / Krak grenades).

Remember that at the start of the game the chance to spawn more dangerous bugs is pretty low. So close the doors, run away from fights (think ammo/medpacks wise - "Is it worth to waste supplies in order to get those in a specific room?").

Do not forget about drugs: painkillers set your pain at 0 and make you immune for some time. Stimpacks make you a bit faster - it may help to get an edge over bugs.

Game Hunter has a video Let's Play series of a Technician that you may be able to learn from.

I think my main problem is that I just fill those bugger with holes every chance I get. This is all dandy when you're in the storage tower (with Med-kits en ammo to spare), but once I need to find another elevator because the one in the storage tower is broken, than I run into problems ;-)

Don't you need plenty of keys just to get around in there?

You need some, but:
  • You would get some of them while going through crates. Explore level one a bit, you need the experience and ammo.
  • Technical skill does wonders.
  • At some point, you can ignore all the keys and doors and just start to behave in a more aggresive way ;] .

Wait, why would you not need keys any more? *Oblivious*

From the release announcement: Oh, and everything can be now destroyed (with the right firepower).
