High cpu usage?

So I decided to try & pick up DoomRL 0996 (it's AGES ago since I last played this game), and I noticed that the game has a very high cpu usage. And I'm playing this in console mode. Is it just me or wasn't it like that before? My laptop's fan is going crazy over it...

In fact, graphical DoomRL 0.9.9.6 on Windows 7 x64 leaks CPU like hell.
Both my laptops, Acer and HP, have constant 25% CPU usage (on quad-core).
Text version doesn't leak, so I believe it's something in graphics library.

My laptop's a 64bit W7, but this desktop I'm currently using is a 32bit W7 and it has the same problem.
Bandicam (which shows the framerate in the corner of the screen) displays 999 lol. There doesn't seem to be any kind of framerate control whatsoever, I think thats the problem.

Eh, I didn't notice any high cpu usage. I'm running 996 Console, on Win7 and Win8, both 64 bit.
