We say that as well in Czech (Třešnička na dortu).

I think I would put icing on a cake and a cherry on a sundae.  :)

Although, I think a cherry goes well on lots of desserts.

EDIT:  Corrected an embarrassing typo.  Cherries do not go well on "deserts."  :P

well, actually i m french ;) but i have never but any cherry on my cake, i wasn't sure for the English translation of "la cerise sur le gateau" :s)
