Here's what worked for me: I hit AoD once, fast enough that could not retaliate. Then I moved away from him, he followed, but since I had faster movement, after some moves he could not follow. Then I still moved, until he couldn't follow for the second time. Then I waited for one turn, which brought him into my melee range, but with enough time for me to strike without retaliation. And I moved again ...
Rinse and repeat for about half an hour, and you're fine even without any weapon and/or Brute.
I can't recall my movement/attack speeds at that time, but they both must be <0.67s for this plan to have a chance.

Couldn't you use a throwing knife so you would only have to worry about movement speed?

In that case it was a AoMC/UV game and I was playing a Cateye rapidfire Scout who decided to give Conqueror a shot - but the decision was made somewhere around Cybie. For that reason, I had no melee weapons whatsoever ...

I had a chainsaw, but I ditched it after I killed the AoD. Mainly though, I used the throwing knife strategy.
