Crap. I wrote a really neat story about this run, then lost it all by clicking the wrong button on my browser. I'll let the mortem speak for itself instead, except for this: the GCB with fire time 0.09 and severe knockback is the ultimate form of combat.

No, I was trying different stuff around dlev 20, and couldn't find a proper MO; couldn't pack enough punch with the shotgun, ran out of cells with the assault rifle... I still had the storm bolter combat pistol, and since my Sharpshooter run on 0996 (with a storm bolter vanilla pistol) was a huge success, I thought I'd simply switch back to pistols and get it over with. Then came the GCB (for the 2nd time in 2 A100 games). How I laughed....

I find that to be almost a crime to doomguy's effectiveness. :P

You went pure damage but few points in EE instead of SoB/Sog would actually make tremendous difference in your final DPS. Consider it next time, you can't imagine the difference. If you thought it was a relatively easy run with the beretta, you should have seen it with some points in EE, never missing is actually more important than pure extra damage traits after some levels.

Makes you kill enemies even faster and saves ammunition too. Usually after every 2-3 points in SoG/Sob it's relatively safe to say that one EE gives more damage than putting more points in dmg traits. Master traits are ofc exceptions but you don't have those on this build. And since you had intuition already, with even a few points in EE you could actually kill opponents in the dark without ever giving them a chance to get back at you. With no EE points, shooting in the dark is useless you miss 80-90% of the time, why give the monsters the chance to hit you? :P

PS: It may just be speculation, but if you played on higher difficulty level you probably wouldn't have survived with this build due to misses. Gratz anyhow though. :)

I wanted to start INT-INT because of the huge advantage this gives early on. Then I went for WK-WK, since I thought an early pair of cerberus boots were going to be a huge blessing - and I was right. I could possibly have skipped HR and REL, but the next 10 levels would then be SOG+SOB. After that, it was IRO just to make sure I'd outlast the last couple of levels.

By then I was carrying around over 2000 bullets, and I never came close to running out. Had ammo been more scarce, EE would have been a solid investment. In this case, when being able to knock everything out of vision range before it could respond, I could afford to miss a couple of shots.

INT-INT's and consequently Cateye build's advantages actually permit you to kill enemies before they even have a chance, but can only be done effectively with some points in EE. INT's prerequisite is 2 points in EE for a good reason you see. :P
You can even do damageless runs this way, it's your best bet.

You do have a point concerning ammunition, but as I already said EE would still be by far a better investment even damagewise than any of the SoB points you put afterwards. Unless you used shotguns ofc which never miss. Just try it next time, and you'll see for yourself. xD

The main reason I use INT2 is so I know where enemies are. On early levels, I mostly use shotguns, which indeed don't benefit fom EE; on later levels - provided there is the slightest amount of cover, I simply use it to tag something, then wait for it to step into sight range. With an accuracy of +3 (storm bolter cp) or +5 (GCB single shot - I totally forgot to test the other fire modes), hitting stuff presents little problems.

I'll keep it in mind for the next run. In hindsight, I might as well have played Sharpshooter again, ditching SoB altogether.

I'll bet. Although in that case, I think I have to agree with Radagast and say that it's the EE3 prerequisite that makes the difference (2D6 damage means 12 with every shot on MSs, 12 [3.5+3.5+5] average with SOB5).

Definitely. "You hit them where it hurts" is fine, you need to hit first.

While being able to ignore hurtfloors altogether gives you a lot of freedom, I never found it that important. Last time I played Ao100 (UV), I believe I took around 50 damage from lava throughout the whole game. You can almost always find a way around lava, or break down walls to bypass it, and if you really cannot do that, you'll have a phase or a protection suit. Protecting your feet is practical, but doesn't make the game that much easier IMO, just more convenient. The speed bonus from tactical boots on the other hand...

It can be good to switch between boots, but these days I don't even bother, since I always end up messing up and walk into lava in my tacticals.

Although not having to mind where you walk is 1 distinct advantage, there's two more:

* In 0997 you have, besides the 'lava river' levels, 'lava lake' levels as well. Especially with INT2, you can use these to fall back into and pick off things just outside of vision.

* BARRELS! I've used napalm barrels on more than one occassion to just seal off 1 half of a level, making the chances of something truly nasty following me pretty slim. Additionaly, you can use barrels more strategically in combat since you don't have to worry about not being able to cross the trail of nasty crap they leave behind.

I use them more as part of a defensive strategy than for just being able to wander around.

Well, I use barrels like that as well, I just make sure there is a small bridge in the lava sea, which I can then camp and pick off any enemies that try to cross it. I guess picking enemies off from lava sounds pretty good, but I'll take cornershooting over sniping anytime.

With the knockback SOG5/SOB5 (or SOG5/MSs), it kinda amounts to the same thing.
Remember I play HNTR; I seriously doubt this tactic works on UV+.

The nice thing about GCB + MSs is that the single-shot mode does knockback but the others don't. Knockback on the 6x burst can't be very good for the DPS, I imagine. You definitely do not need knockback when your firing time is 0.09s. :P
