A Beginner's Guide to DoomRL

"Small Health Globes should be taken if your health is critically low" - how much is that? I remember something about 25% on first levels, and 50% on levels with lava, Revenants, Mancubi and Arch-Viles.
Megaspheres are also the only thing that repair some non-repairable armors.

Here's an addendum for new players as well regarding difficulties:

In DoomRL, there are five difficulty levels, and if it is the first time that you are playing, only the first three are available for you.  The five difficulty levels are:
* I'm Too Young To Die! (ITYTD) -- Easy
* Hey, Not Too Rough (HNTR) -- Medium
* Hurt Me Plenty (HMP) -- Hard
* Ultra-Violence (UV) -- Very Hard
* Nightmare! (N!) -- Nightmare! For a first time player, I recommend playing on ITYTD first until you get your first win before transitting to HNTR.  If you can do ITYTD with 100% kills, you are ready to do the challenge games -- those are for HNTR and higher.  I would recommend staying on HNTR until you are very comfortable with the game, then progress to HMP to prepare for UV difficulty (or go straight to AoMC on UV to learn the UV mechanics).  I won't say anything about N!.

What are the differences between the difficulty levels?  Let me try to summarise them in this little table (if it is not on the Wiki, someone else can put it there):
      | Enemy toHit  Enemy Spd   Enemy   Exp gain  Score   Ammo spawn  Power-up
      |    bonus       factor   Respawn    rate    factor     rate     duration
------+-------------------------------------------------------------------------
ITYTD |      -1         1.0x      No       1.4x     0.5x      2.0x       2.0x
HNTR  |       0         1.0x      No       1.2x     1.0x      1.0x       1.0x
HMP   |       0         1.0x      No       1.0x     1.5x      1.25x      1.0x
UV    |      +2         1.0x      No       1.0x     2.0x      1.5x       1.0x
N!    |      +2         1.5x     Yes       1.2x     4.0x      2.0x       2.0x
So really, if this is the first time you are playing DoomRL, there is little incentive to play on HMP+ in the beginning -- the many deaths from the lack of an advantage will mean a longer take-up of the game mechanics.  Most challenges are done on HNTR and UV difficulty levels anyway; if anything, HMP is a rather "odd" level that few will ever need to play on.

White Rider:
The wiki does have a similar table, but with different values.

Just wanted to thank you all for contributing to this guide.  It has been most helpful, especially at keeping me not frustrated with DoomRL :D

Good to know.  I think the actual numbers are not completely important (they fall into the balancing aspect), but the general trend of each difficulty level relative to the rest is the take-home that we want people to have.  I pulled my values from the stuff in the repository (and hastily put together before my doctor's appointment), so it might be horribly futuristic/filled with typos, and the Wiki stuff may not be updated to 0.9.9.7 values.
