This was supposed to be a Malicious Knives Cross, but apparently, I misunderstood the way the kill attribution works. :( I was under the impression that in this version, if you have a ranged weapon in hand, it only attributes kills to that weapon if somebody dies while you're firing it. This seemed to be confirmed by the fact that I've had games where I killed enemies in melee while I had a Pistol in hand and I still got the Sunrise Iron Fist medal. Then, when I was about 400 levels into this game, I saw this post in another thread:
1) its ok to melee-kill someone while holding ranged weapon, kills count towards fist-kills.
2) if any monster dies from any other source (i.e. demons die in lava, or even mosters tele-killing each other [and that happened to me]) while you have a weapon in your hands - kills count towards that weapon.
The only time I wielded any weapon other than knives for the whole game was in the first few levels, before I found a Combat Knife. (With the exception of times when I tried to get credit for assemblies, and in those cases, I made sure everyone on the level was dead before I did that) This means that I most likely lost the Malicious Knives Cross at the beginning of the game, (maybe even level 1!) and then proceeded to use Knives for 666 friggin' levels, not realizing that I had failed before I even began! Grrrr! >:( The most irritating thing about it is that in every single other melee challenge I've ever done, I always unwielded my weapons first thing so this wouldn't happen. This is the only time I've ever just gone ahead with a Pistol in hand and trusted the kill attribution to work properly. :|

Anyway, during beta-testing, I tried doing a fist-only run of AAo666, but died in the 500's to a Nightmare Arachnotron cave. I didn't feel like recreating that, so I thought I'd try setting my sights a little lower and do a knives-only run. :) I briefly considered doing it on UV, but quickly decided to to HNTR instead. (Oh yeah, Hell Knights on level 3; forgot about that) :P So my goal was YAAM with a Malicious Knives Cross. (Well, at least I succeeded in *one* of my goals) ;) Naturally, Malicious Blades was the obvious choice of build for this game. :)
While I was at it, I decided to see if I could get all of the assemblies and failed at that too, due to the game being stingy with Onyx mods. (with my luck, they were probably all on one of the 55 levels that I nuked) :P I found five in the whole game, one of which was on level 666, after I had already assembled the Cybernano armour, so I couldn't do anything with it. :P
During my previous run, I got Cerberus Phaseshift Armour combined with Antigrav Phaseshift Boots, which seemed pretty effective, so I did the same thing here, although, I held off on completing the assembly of the Cerberus Armour until I got my first Onyx mod on level 81, so I could be sure it wouldn't get destroyed. Unfortunately, I didn't get any Nano mods until level 194! (The game was a bit stingy with those too) :P So without the Antigrav boots to offset the speed reduction of the Cerberus armour, I ended up using an extra power/agility-modded Phaseshift armour that I happened to have for a substantial portion of the game, switching to the Cerberus one whenever it got too damaged. I ended up deciding that I liked the extra speed more than the extra protection and ended up Onyx-modding it on level 338 and wearing that instead and my Cerberus armour just sat, collecting dust for the rest of the game.
I was momentarily confused about how little damage the Arch-Viles were doing to me, until I realize that they do fire damage instead of plasma damage now! :o This means that Malicious Blades trait protected me against them. (Hmm... this changes things about how I approach Arch-Viles!) This also meant that the Inquisitor Set gave total protection against a lot of enemies. Check this out:

That's a Cyberdemon, Mancubus, Revenant, Arch-Vile, and Nightmare Arch-Vile, none of whom can hurt me. :D (And yes, I still play the console version) ;) Nevertheless, I still really liked the speed from the Phaseshift set (even though anyone who hit me knocked me back about a mile) :P since I was walking at 0.13 seconds per move and running at 0.09 seconds per move! (I was moving so fast, that at one point, on level 492, there was an armed nuke and I managed to clear the entire level and get to the stairs in less than one minute of in-game time!) :D Everyone seemed to be moving in slow motion in comparison, particularly with zero-time kills with the Butcher's Cleaver, speaking of which...
Basically, the only weapons I used for the whole game were the Butcher's Cleaver and the power-modded Chainsword you see in my inventory. Since the BC confers the Blademaster effect if you kill an enemy with it, this meant a lot of juggling between the two weapons, depending on what enemy I was attacking, to make sure the BC delivered the killing blow. If it was something that takes an odd number of hits to kill, I would switch to the BC as my primary weapon and for enemies that took an even number of hits to kill, I would swap the Chainsword into my primary slot. Some enemies took a varied number of hits to kill, and in those cases, I would do a Chainsword primary hit first and if that failed to kill it, then I would swap weapons and finish it off with the BC. Here's my handy table of number of hits that I made for myself that served me for about 500 levels: :)
Normal Formers, Imps, Lost Souls, Arachnotrons, and Revenants: 1 hit
Nightmare Imps: 1-2 hits
Elite Formers, Hell Knights, Barons, Cacodemons, Pain Elementals, and Mancubi: 2 hits
Arch-Viles and Bruiser Brothers: 2-3 hits
Nightmare Demons, Nightmare Cacodemons, Nightmare Arachnotrons: 3 hits
Lava Elementals and Shamblers: 4 hits
Agony Elementals: 6-7 hits
Cyberdemons: usually 8 hits
So there you have it! Funnily enough, this run gave me the last silver badge I needed to go up in rank. Time to update my sig. :)
