[U|99%|YAVP] Klear Nukem strikes again!

As I promised in this post, I set off to get a Gambler's shield. This was my first attempt. In the Arena I told the Arena Master to stuff it after the second round so I could go to the Chained Court variant with 3 levers. Early levels had very few levers and none of the ones that can be pulled 3 times, but I did get Deimos Lab with 6 levers, so it looked relatively good. I was counting 14 levers pulled when I found a Trigun and an invulnerability globe. Needless to say, the plan to get Gambler's shield flew right out of the window and I started nuking:

Level 14 - nuked
Spider's Lair - incinerated
Level 15 - eradicated
Cyberdemon - eliminated
Level 17 - annihilated
Unholy Cathedral - destroyed
Level 18 - liquidated

That's when I ran out of invulnerability. I had to fight an arch-vile complex, but with my super shotgun, it was easy. Next level gave me another invulnerability.

Level 20 - wasted
Mortuary - erased
Level 21 - trashed

It was a mistake to enter the Mortuary though. The stairs are quite far and I had nothing to gain (the regular stairs were within reach as well). I did have two phase devices (sadly neither one homing) so I was hoping one of them would get me close to the stairs. No such luck. I had enough charge to nuke the following level, but from then on I was on my own. No more invulnerability globes spawned from then on, sadly.

Level 23 has proven to be difficult. Lot of Viles, lot of nasties, but the worst thing is that I completely ran out of ammo. I kinda didn't need to think about ammo throughout the game, since I was using mostly my super shotgun and there was always plenty of sergeants. Well, I wasn't completely out of ammo, I still had the 6 bullets in the Trigun. You know, in case I wanted to kill myself. Well, turns out I did want to kill myself, though in a different way. I descended the stairs and said hello to the Mastermind.

Spider Mastermind - defeated and obliterated.

I know, I know. I only nuked 11 levels, 4 less than last time. Must be getting old. And it seems I had a nuke in my pocket this whole time. No idea what I was saving that one for.

So... when do I get a medal named after me?

You know, theoretically, you could have gotten a couple more nukes in there if you had used the Lava Element while you were standing on the stairs on Level 23, nuked it, gone down the stairs, nuked the Mastermind, homing phased to the stairs, and nuked JC.  I think the Lava Element would last juuuuuust long enough for you to do that.  :)

(Of course, all of that would require that you had cleared the Lava Pits)

Yeah, I had no chance to clear Mt. Erebus (which spawned instead). No boots to speak of, no envirosuits. I would have done it even without a homing phase though. The lava element only needs to last while nuking the Mastermind to be able to nuke JC =)

O_O lava element last for 9 turns.  homing phase not work at Dis. not a chance

homing phase not work at Dis. not a chance

They don't? I could swear I've used a homing phase after nuking the Mastermind and it got me to the stairs. I might be misremembering it. On the other hand, even with a regular phase I could have gotten lucky and got close enough to the stairs.

FYI, I just confirmed that Homing Phase Devices do not work on Dis, even after you nuke the Mastermind.
