Berserk! 0.8 - Release Candidate 1
« on: January 13, 2007, 15:26 »

Okay, I didn't manage to stick in all the features that I wanted, so some of the 0.8 features will have to wait for Release Candidate 2. The features implemented are:

Code: [Select]
-- [add] Endless Mode!
-- [add] advancement and skill/trait system
-- [add] new skills ("w"hirlwind attack, "i"mpale)
-- [add] character screen ("@");
-- [add] highscore tables dependant on modes
-- [add] added message coloring and "P"ast message viewer
-- [add] added ini options : AlwaysRandomName, ClearMessages,
  MessageColoring, MessageBuffer,MortemMessages
-- [mod] enhanced mortem.txt
-- [mod] seperated the code from the UI
-- [mod] changed the message system to Valkyrie TMessages
-- [mod] increased number of knives in Massacre mode to 10
-- [mod] optional killcount on screen
-- [mod] nerfed willpower
-- [fix] fixed berserk regeneration exploit
-- [fix] fixed damage calculation mod

So, without further ado:

berserk-0.8-rc1-win32.zip

Please comment and help with the following
-- Berserk! manual update -- see another thread
-- Balance of the Skills and Statistics
-- How easy/hard is Endless mode
-- How long can one go in Endless, and does it get boring before death ;]

The following features are still scheduled for 0.8
-- change in Endless monster generation algorithim
-- a few new monsters
-- maybe yet another skill or two
-- screenshot in mortem
-- updated help system
-- tweaks on Endless mode highscore table

I'm waiting for feedback! ^_^

Firstly - Thank you! I like all your projects, you are really talanted man! Waiting for new version of Berserk - by that i see, it's gonna be cool!

I played approximately 10 times in Endless mode, and i must say that it seemed to me that difficulty isn't increasing evenly by levels. Hardest levels for me was 1-st and 4-th.
Here is my best try:
-- Berserk! (0.8 RC 1) Post Mortem -----------------------------------

  Character name  : Blade
  Game type       : Endless
  Nights survived : 4
  Monsters killed : 326

  STR: 14  DEX: 12  END: 10  WIL: 13
  Speed: 107  HP: -1/105  EN: 115/115
  Base damage: 2d6+5  Weight: 10

-- Weapons left ------------------------------------------------------

  Cannon (0/1)  Crossbow (0/36)

-- Kills (326) -------------------------------------------------------

  39 bulldemons
  221 beasts
  13 mandagores
  11 nightmares
  38 hunters
  4 monsters

-- Skills (4) --------------------------------------------------------

  Ironman (level 1)
  Sweep attack (level 3)

-- Messages ----------------------------------------------------------

 You hit the mandagore!
 The mandagore misses you.
 You hit the mandagore!
 You hit the mandagore!
 The mandagore dies!
 The mandagore evades your
 blow.
 The mandagore hits you!
 You die!...
 Press <Enter>

-- Achievements ------------------------------------------------------

Max kills in one turn    : 4
Longest killing sequence : 6 kills in 2 turns.
  Survived for             : 1762 turns
  Died on                  : Town
Reason of death          : killed by a mandagore

I tried to start with character Str:12 Dex:12 End:12 Will:10, to take Running, then Impale(to check out, what is it)), but every time he died on level 2. So cannot say anything for now about it, or about Whirlwind. Only one thing, that i can say - Swing is quite balanced by prerequisites and by output.
I cannot say that Endless mode is too easy or too hard - endless game with increasing difficulty cannot be easy. It isn't very hard because i think that i haven't yet found best set of characteristics and skills.
My result isn't so good, but i haven't get bored playing this 10 times.)) Endless mode remembers me of Crimson Land, and i haven't got bored of it.))

I have found one bug:
Code: [Select]
                  .....                            Blade, the Berserker
                  .......                          Str:10 Dex:14 End:10 Wil:10

                   ...                             Berserk!
                                                   yourself (unhurt)
                                                                             [0]
It was my first game - there i picked only Dextirity 14, and IronMan. I'm the Berserker that is below. When i'm looking on duplicate Berserker that is above me, game says that it's me. After few turns i noticed third duplicate to the left, but i haven't screenshot him. I died on level 1 because only Dex 14 isn't the best set.)) I faced the same problem in my last game - there i used Str:12 Dex:12 End:12 Will:10. But there i noticed only 1 copy of me. Also i realized that if you have such duplicate copy, monsters sometimes appeares from nowhere right near you.

About the gameplay - any idea why level one is so hard? One advice -- do not take Ironman if anything else is available. Ironman is there ONLY to avoid a situation where you can't choose any other trait. Hence is practicaly useless. Better take Running instead -- IMHO it's a MUST for any game. Second thing -- usage of items is important. Kill hunters with knives/crossbow, use bombs/cannon each time you see a big lump of monsters (running helps to position yourself for that). Third -- you have a LOT of unused weapons in your mortem... looks like you don't know the r/R reload keys? ALWAYS reload at the first breather you have after emptying the magazine. This is especialy important in the case of the Cannon, which is a true lifesaver.

Oh and another one -- with pain at -4 your attacks start to get practicaly useless -- fallback in that case.

Now for the less enjoying part -- the BUG. Damn, this looks serious. Try to remind yourself of all the things that happened before... was it named "yourself" or "Blade"? Did it move? Did it blink or just stay in one place? How often does that happen?

Dex 14 isn't SO bad :P :
Code: [Select]
-- Berserk! (0.8 RC 1) Post Mortem -----------------------------------

  Character name  : Blade
  Game type       : Endless
  Nights survived : 3
  Monsters killed : 183

  STR: 10  DEX: 16  END: 10  WIL: 10
  Speed: 111  HP: -9/110  EN: 100/100
  Base damage: 1d6+5  Weight: 10

-- Weapons left ------------------------------------------------------

  Crossbow (12/18)  FairyDust (1)

-- Kills (183) -------------------------------------------------------

  27 bulldemons
  105 beasts
  10 mandagores
  6 nightmares
  31 hunters
  4 monsters

-- Skills (3) --------------------------------------------------------

  Ironman (level 3)

...

It would be better if I could use that last Fairydust :/ -- unfortunately a Mandagore criticaly hit me for 28 damage :/. And I was already clearing Night 3... just a few more monsters...

Edit: I know that it will sound stupid, but... this game is fun :D

Neat! I'll take a look at it but I can't post my impressions until Saturday (or Friday depending on where you are) as I have a sailing regatta to attend.

Thanks for the roguelikes!

I see that IM is useless, but Running requires EN*2 so in game Str:14 Dex:12 End:10 Will:10 i just cannot pick it before i raise my End by 2 points.

Second thing -- usage of items is important. Kill hunters with knives/crossbow, use bombs/cannon each time you see a big lump of monsters (running helps to position yourself for that).

I use items in every opportuninty.

Third -- you have a LOT of unused weapons in your mortem... looks like you don't know the r/R reload keys? ALWAYS reload at the first breather you have after emptying the magazine. This is especialy important in the case of the Cannon, which is a true lifesaver.

I know how to reload. But you cannot reload in Berserk mode. It was end of the night 4, i used all my Fairy Dusts, and in the end i realized myself with 6 hp, Berserked and with 6 Mandagores left on level. I decided that my life costs more than all that stuff in my backpack, so i fired all my arsenal in them. After that only 3 Mandagores were left(it seems to me that bombs are too weak - i had thrown 5 directly in Mandagores and nobody have died), and i still had one unreloaded shot for Cannon and lots of bolts for crossbow. I still was Berserk, so i run by perimeter of them map to win time while Berserk will deactivate. I run 7(or more) circles, but was still Berserk, so i decided that with so low hp i cannot become normal again.)) So only death or victory in melee remained as choise. I killed first 2 Mandagores, but third killed me. Can Berserk deactivate when you have 6 hp?

Oh and another one -- with pain at -4 your attacks start to get practicaly useless -- fallback in that case.

Yes, i know. You can avoid monsters when you have pain more than -2 even without Running.

Now for the less enjoying part -- the BUG. Damn, this looks serious. Try to remind yourself of all the things that happened before... was it named "yourself" or "Blade"? Did it move? Did it blink or just stay in one place? How often does that happen?

Screenshot was made right after my spawn on the level(you see that message log is empt), maybe even duplicate appered in the same time when i appeared. It was named "yourself(unhurt)". It didn't moved. It just stayed in one place, as wall, without blinking. It happened 3 times - in first game 2 times, and in the last one 1 time. He seemed to be undestroyable(i fired cannon at him, but haven't noticed, if his status changed from unhurt). Monsters ignored him, but if you stay on one other side of duplicate, and monster stay directly on the opposite side, he don't tries to walk aroung duplicate, he tries to walk through. I remember that in my last game before duplicate appeared i used Alt-Tab to change music in WinAmp(and i played game in full screen every time).

My first mortem on the game!

  Nights survived : 3
  Monsters killed : 201

  Survived for             : 931 turns

Noticed bugs: I had the same problem that Blade and Malek, when I started the game, I had this:
http://img181.imageshack.us/img181/6261/berserkdoublemebx4.jpg
I attacked it and I was hurt!

Thoughts:
Running is pretty much mandatory, I guess, so why not make it accesible from the start, and levels invested on it drop the energy cost significantly and make you move faster? Otherwise it's like forcing players to get 12 End and spend a trait on it at the start.

Ironman seems useless, as you already said... But since there are skills still missing I think it might be OK.

Sweep is cool. It saved my life on more than one occasion.

The ammo recharge between phases could perhaps be tweakable? I mean, it would be fun to be able to put a bonus ammo every phase. So you get the preprogrammed ammo getting (+1 Fairydust +1 cannon, etc) but then you are able to get one extra recharge, that would give you the same amount of ammo the predefined stack gives you. Could open up more tactical decisions!
"Should I get another Fairydust or 3 more knives this round?"
Come to think of it, perhaps Fairydusts would have to be let out of this phase so you don't abuse them... perhaps not, because if the ammo getting is sufficiently balanced, maybe you end up getting other weapons that just make you not need an extra health recharge.

I tried Impale on a Massacre mode, and it's pretty powerful and original!

Bombs, as Blade said, seem a bit weak. Perhaps to compensate you could add them more damage or let you throw them above monsters, so you can send a bomb right at the rear guard of all the enemies that attack you, even when you are surrounded.

Anyway, it's a great game! Thank again! :)

Thanks for this great update Kornel! I like the Endless mode very much.

This was my first try with the new version, I survived almost 5 days. Unfortunately the Nightmare's damage was a bit higher than I expected so I died with 2 fairy dusts. I ran out of weapons of mass destruction and there was a huge horde of B's, M's and N's behind me when I died.

I didn't find this Doppleganger bug, but I did find a very minor cosmetic bug. When you're selecting the stats and scroll down to Willpower and then back up, the 'y' from the word recovery (willpower's description) isn't cleared. And that was the only bug I found.

Please comment and help with the following
-- Berserk! manual update -- see another thread
-- Balance of the Skills and Statistics
-- How easy/hard is Endless mode
-- How long can one go in Endless, and does it get boring before death ;]

-I was a beta tester so I don't need the manual, but I guess some info about the skills would be useful.
-The stats seem to be balanced, I didn't try the new skills yet.
-The Endless mode's difficulty is quite good for me. The amount of tough monsters is quite high in the end though.
-It's not boring at all! I think 5th night is survivable, but after that the amount of tough monsters is way too high. At least for me.

Would you like to consider increasing the stat gains after the more difficult nights? +1 seems quite low after, say, fourth night. I just put them to willpower to see the effect immediately.

Anyway, good work and keep that up. :)

This doppleganger bug sucks -- especialy that it never happend to me o.O. Okay, TODAY I will release RC2, with the REPLAY feature -> so if anyone will have that happen, he will post the replay :].

In the meantime please help with the manual!

Other points:
-- the running point is valid. I'll make running possible from the start, and allow Enhanced Running as a skill (better name, anyone?).
-- bombs should be more powerful. I think that for now I'll just increase the damage.
-- as for item choice between days, that's something that will be unique for the Campaign mode.
-- cosmetic bug fixed
-- as for stats -- maybe a 1 point per stat except dexterity would be fine?

P.S. Playing "Berserk OST - Murder" in the background while playing Berserk! realy kicks the mood in... with 1.0.0 I plan a Berserk! Special Release with the soundtrack -- anyone interested? ;].

Really stupid death. I haven't noticed Bulldemon that appeared to the left of me. It was nearly end of night, and all i was need is to use Fairydust, reload Cannon and fire it. But anyway it's my best result. At least i see now that it is possible to survive 8 nights.

I love cannon - it is much more powerfull than bombs, and it saves me often.

12 kills!

-- the running point is valid. I'll make running possible from the start, and allow Enhanced Running as a skill (better name, anyone?).

Hellrunner?)) We already have IronMan here, why not?))

-- bombs should be more powerful. I think that for now I'll just increase the damage.

Also one more annoying thing - knives very often misses. One time i missed 4 knives thrown at hunter. With Dex: 12.

-- as for stats -- maybe a 1 point per stat except dexterity would be fine?

Maybe make first 3 levels giving you 1 point, then next 6 giving you 2 points, then ... i don't know how it is that far, but maybe 3 points?))

One minor bug i noticed: i started with character Str:12 Dex:12 End:12 Will:10, and spent every my 2 points per 2 levels on Str. I want to take Impale as soon as possible. So, after easy calculation i realized that i will be able to take Impale after 4 levels(when i will have Str:14). But after the 4-th level, when i taken Str:14, prerequisites of Impale still say me that i need Str:14. I was able to take Impale only on next level.

What help with manual particularly you need?
