OK, so after some discussion on the benefits of Scavenger, I decided to put it to the test by trying to land Heroic Gold (by way of the Experience Cross) and any Technician Badges I could lay my hands on. Eventually - after about 4 days IRL - I decided I wanted to live no more, and sank myself into a mix of lava and acid on level 271.

Here's what happened:

Although my positive views of MSc in general have shifted somewhat - once I have discovered all assemblies, chances of me playing it again are slim, especially in a regular game, and with the relatively huge amount of sniper and firestorms it got me it brings no better offensive advantage than other master traits, even when no basic traits are blocked - I must say I made incredible progress assembly-wise: when I started, I was short 8 advanced and 6 master assemblies, and now it's just 2 of each. The slap in the face came around dlev 180, when I finally found the Onyx mod I'd been hunting for for about 150 levels, to complete the fireshield: the nanofiber skin I made on 98 wouldn't come off, thereby ruining my chances at any Technician badge. I swallowed hard, but decided to press on anyway.

Levels came and went and came and went and came and went. With a storm bolter, SOG5, SOB5 and EE4 (thanks Radagast), there were actually very little real threats. The inventory you see didn't really change much over the last 200+ dlevs; I never ran out of medkits, never ran of homing phases, and never came close to running out of ammo. I decided to keep the relatively cumbersome nanomachic I made on 221 as a backup anyhow, fun little toy.

Once I reached level 25 I stopped clearing every level and just started dashing for the stairs asap. I was of no avail: realizing how much time I had already been playing, and how much levels I still had to go without obtaining any further goal, I decided to just flip off all those demons out there and do what they were unable to for the last 16½ hours: kill me. Sweet relief.

I'll hunt down the last couple of Tech badges in standard games, possibly with a Scavenger - although any other Technician build save Entrenchment sounds like a better plan to me. For a regular game I'll take Sharpshooter over no blocked basic traits any day.

Educational run, all in all, just too bad it's soooo boooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooring. :)

1 question :
Why nanomachic... chaingun ? O_o

Gun, I'd understand.
Plasma gun... obviously.
Rocket, napalm or missile launcher too.
Minigun would sound like a waste to me, but at least, it deals a lot of damages instances, which maxes SoB, somehow.

But WHY a chaingun ? Really ! :(

Because:
1) I never built one before, and didn't know what to expect
2) I was only interested in building it for the sake of the Technician Badge - I just started slapping bulk mods on the first weapon I could find. Then I kept it because it allowed me to do some sniping without spending ammo; when I needed DPS I just switched back to the pistol again.

But with SOB 5 and EE 4 (and the power mod) an arch-vile took no more than 3 shots, and a baron 4. They'd be dead by the time they came close anyway.

True but plasma nanomachic could do the same thing with just 2 shots you know. :P (playing with one now with same build on Ao100-Ao666 is too boring to be played)
And the further deep you descent the more often you can get into ambushes with too many of them at the same time, making the killing speed essential.
And bullet dmg is always worse than plasma, especially for armored opponents...

Sure, sure, but like I said, I only made it for the sake of the assembly, I never intended to actually do anything with it. Now that I know what it does, however, I might well use that knowledge to my advantage on a future run.

I did this run and when the stormbolter with SoG and SoB was great with firing speed, I assembled a nanomachic rocket launcher for the packs. This and a cybernano red armor to take some of the damage you can take if packs are near you, and nothing can kill you. I think the advantage of the nanomachic rocket launcher, it's that a RR can be found early. In maps like city, you can even kill everything with this assembled RR. And there's always 10mm ammo chain for the stormbolter to be found.

Good thinking. Like I said, I hadn't really given any thought about what to expect from the nanoweapon; if I had, I probably would have chosen something else. And yeah, I love storm bolters backed by a dozen skill points :)

If it makes you feel any better, in my AAo666 game, I built a Nanomachic Pistol.  :)  Partly for the novelty, partly because I was playing a Malicious Knives game and didn't intend to use the weapon anyway.
