First try. Made some terrible choices of attributes, so I'm not too disapointed with my game length.
Problem is that at 12 END I still couldn't take Running.

I noticed this too. I took END 12 at level up and it didn't let me take running.

Running's still a must-have. Impale's ok, and maybe once I manage to push a couple more ranks into it I'll have a more solid opinion. Sweep(3) isn't nearly as good as I had hoped.

Perhaps Sweep (and Whirlwind?) could also have improved damage at higher levels?

Good luck with the exam!

Thanks! I recieved my 4(it's "B" in american system), and that's enough.))

Problem is that at 12 END I still couldn't take Running.
I noticed this too. I took END 12 at level up and it didn't let me take running.

It seems that you can't pick skill with certain prerequisite on level, when you fulfilled last prerequisite.

BTW how are points given out at end of night? (I got 4 after first night but one after second? O.o)

I always recieved only 1 point per level)) Maybe you tell us the system?

Oh, and I like the "night lenght counter" very much ^^

Me too, oh, me too!

Perhaps Sweep (and Whirlwind?) could also have improved damage at higher levels?

Yes, i was thinking about it too. Maybe not improved, but at least normal attack damage?

Here's my try in Candidate 2:

Wraiths are crazyness, especially when massed. Just had no chance to survive such Skeletons-Mandagores mass.

I like that there are no more hunters! Imps are so weak!))

Berserk! just got bashed on rec.games.roguelike.misc -- anyone willing to defend it is encouraged to post :).

Berserk! just got bashed on rec.games.roguelike.misc -- anyone willing to defend it is encouraged to post :).

Heh, I think it will pretty much degenerate into a flamewar if not taken with caution. So I prefer not to post anything there. My Terminator armour may fail it's salvation roll against flame, and then I'd have to wield my trusty heavy flamer, for the Emperor. :P

My opinion, in case anyone is interested, is this:

I never noticed that anyone said you are a "god" of RLs. I mean, you are actually good and have nice ideas, but different people just have different opinions. What I like in your games (or other people here, for that matter) doesn't represent the whole RL community, of course. Berserk has 4 votes - so what? 4 people think it's a great game made in 2006. Nobody said "OMG BERSARK IS LIEK TEH BEST GAEM EVAR!!!111". It's not a "whole community award". And there are other games with the same amount of votes than Berserk!. If he doesn't like the game it's fine - some people don't like Angband or Nethack, and they just don't play it. And those games have a much longer life than your projects. A single game can't be for everyone, as even a "perfect" game will always have it's detractors. So I think he's overreacting a lot.

For me, of course I like the game, I find it lots of fun, and has potential to become one great roguelike, when it will have more options, weapons, skills, etc. But still, it is in beta stage, so of course it isn't as developed as it will be some day.

Right now, the downsides are that it's pretty repetitive (more kind of landscapes, perhaps including castles and caves and such would help), monsters are not very varied, skills and weapons aren't balanced and there are lots missing, some bugs, lacks more choices for combat (directly related to skills and weapons), etc. But as I said, it's a beta - so it's not complete and people should keep that in mind.

Anyway, if now it's this fun, I can't imagine what version 1.0 will be like :D

I think I've encountered the Doppleganger bug... it happened some time after the first Berserk state I encountered (after it passed), right after I checked "@" screen. Maybe you should add some time counter on screen for easier reference?

Sometimes monsters generate on the edge of the map, and it seems that you can't attack them till they move out of there...

You basicly got the bug unnowingly. It's the character screen that causes the bug. For some reason if you look at the "@" char screen you get teleported down and there is a doppleganger left at where you were before that. I have a replay that shows it clearly

Got it! Yes, it's true that it happens whe you open the character screen -- the funny thing is the reason -- in the charscreen drawing routines I used "y" as a iterator to show the skills. Instead of using the local "y" it used the player's Y beacause all was encompassed into a "with Player do" :P. Bug fixed, will be good in the next RC. Till then don't enter the character info screen.

The evil offending code:

Code: (delphi) [Select]
procedure TBerserkCharGen.Screen;
var Count,y : Byte;
begin
with Player do
begin
  UI.DrawFire;
  Output.ClearRect (7,3,73,23);
  Output.DrawString(8,3,LightGray,PadSpace('-',65,'-'));
  Output.DrawString(10,5,LightGray,'Name      : @<@1@>',[Name]);

(...)

  y := 15;
  for Count := 1 to MAXSKILLS do
    if Skills[Count] > 0 then
    begin
      Output.DrawString(10,y,LightGray,'@1 (level @<@2@>)',[SkillData[Count].Name,Skills[Count]]);
      Inc(y);
    end;

(...)

  Output.DrawString(8,23,LightGray,PadSpace('-- Press <@<Enter@>> to exit... ',65+4,'-'));
  Output.Update;
  Input.GetKey([VKEY_ENTER,VKEY_ESCAPE]);
end;
end;

Oh yes... I had forgotten *sighs* :P

And well... comparing the 7DRL version of CastlevaniaRL and Berserk, I guess Berserk would be better though they share some common points (off course, the cvrl engine was a baby at that time)

[èdit] but CvRL Prelude (and the arena mode on 1.25) were also about fighting to the death

I must admit that a lot of time in Berserk! development I used for keeping the code clean and commented - If you'd browse through it's code you'd see that it's very clean and tidy and commented very verbously.
