Berserk! 0.8 - Release Candidate 3
« on: January 15, 2007, 21:02 »

Duh, I thought that this is only going to be a bugfix release, but after that rgrm discussion, I decided that more monster variety is needed. I removed the Nightmare, and added a unique twist to Mandagore, and also presented one new monster (two actually :P) with a realy unique special ability (hey guys who posted on the Monsters thread -- I AM READING that, and please keep them comming :D). Although I didn't add any new level generators (this will happen in the next version), I tried making the existing ones do a little more different levels.

Also, for fun's sake, a new skill :D.

Here's the new feature's list
-- [add] new monster... you'll hate this one ;]
(removed Nightmare and added a submonster)
-- [add] added a special ability to Mandagores to make them
         more interesting ;]
-- [add] visual clues for the skills at skill choice
-- [add] new skill -- Jump attack! ("j")
-- [mod] tweaked the existing level generators to provide more
         interesting results
-- [fix] attacking on-edge monsters now possible
-- [fix] fixed doppleganger bug!

Replay compatibility between versions is ALWAYS broken.

Thank you for taking the negative reviews on other sites with a grain of salt and continuing to work on this project. It's a very fun game and I look forward to more releases on it as I do with the other Chaosforge games. I'm downloading it now, will give my impressions on Candidates 1-3 come tomorrow when I have more time to give them a try. While fun, my experience with the 7DRL version of Berserk! didn't go very well, and haven't tried it since, been too busy with DoomRL. Anyways, while some may not like the Chaosforge games, I for one will continue to support them and as soon as I get a new job WILL in fact be donating, as unlike other designers/companies, you seem to make the games you want to play, which is the same thing I plan on doing once I start getting training on coding. Anyways, went too far off topic, will have a more on topic post tomorrow after I try out C3.

EDIT: In fact, should I be given the option of what I create for my first exam, my first project will be a Warhammer 40k/Space Hulk RL. Wish me luck all, and some of you (such as Adral) should expect some pvt messages asking about any fluff or backstory I may be missing. :)

@New monster - you were right, we'll hate them
@Mandragora's new grove - I think I saw it but not sure of details - will ask you in private ;P
@Jump skill - eh, have t find time to go that route (So far I tend to go Sweep Attack->Whirlwind Attac)

Also for the first time I saw Wraits and skeleetons - man that was sick... is there some limit to how much skellies a wraith generates, or can they do that infinetly?

Good luck!

-- [add] new monster... you'll hate this one ;]
(removed Nightmare and added a submonster)

Wraiths are worse anyway)) This spores kill other monsters when explode?
One more note: i think that Wraith should be a high-level monster, and he must have chance to appear only on level 6 and higher. I faced Wraith on level 2, and i think that it's not good.
My table of monster appearance:

Beast - level 1
Bulldemon - level 1
Imp - level 1
Mandagore - level 1(maybe 2)
Phasehound - level 3
Defiler - level 5
Wraith - level 6

With such monster appearance you will be able to reach level 8 or 9, i think. That's enough to try Jump skill in Endless mode(yes, player must have an ability to try all maxed skill in every mode).

-- [add] added a special ability to Mandagores to make them
         more interesting ;]

Yes, yes, i like new ability very much! Now Mandagores helps you to kill other monsters! Ally in disguise of enemy?))

-- [add] visual clues for the skills at skill choice

They have visual output only in skill choose screen?

-- [add] new skill -- Jump attack! ("j")

Sorry, haven't tried it yet. I'm still thinking about skills making higher damage(equal to normal damage for Sweep and Whirlwind) on higher skill levels.

-- [mod] tweaked the existing level generators to provide more
         interesting results

I like new terrain generator! Levels are really more interesting now!

-- [fix] attacking on-edge monsters now possible
-- [fix] fixed doppleganger bug!

Good. Good.

My attempt in new version.

Some suggestions, what needs to be cleaned up before release:

Why one more @ always appears near player in mortem "last sight" screen?

Is it supposed that in the end, when you play someone's record, you see YOUR scoreboard?

Add shortcut with "-play" parameter to package with Berserk. And folders with mortems and records.

And my thoughts:

I'm still for giving 1 point per first 5 levels, then 2 points for ther rest of levels. Also, if you can, add few  more monsters, they are always required.))

I think that the bombs should be swinged over monsters, so that they wouldn't explode at the first monster on your way.

Also, if the Wraiths don't have a max summon limit, they should have, like 10 per wraith.

What do the Mandagores get for eating? Healing?

Devourers are a nice addition.

@GenTechJ - thank you for the warm words :)

@Spawning - all the monsters have energy, and use that energy to create special effects. In this sense there is a limit to all abilities. Also Wraiths can only spawn skeletons from corpses (which are changed to blood  when that happens) and skeletons don't leave corpses.

@Levels - well, Wraiths and other "high-tech" stuff can appear at night one, only with a small chance. I want it to be so, so players that don't get far still have the "fun" to try out all the baddies :P.

@Mandagores - it isn't that much good as it seems - Mandies only consume monsters if they're low on HP, and in the process gain all their HP -- so you get x points worth of Mandagore health instead for example x points of beast of bulldemon health -- isn't such a great deal :P.

@Bulldemons - I need to find a way to make them unique, for they are the only monsters left (except beasts) that don't have anything special about them... any suggestions?

@Mortem @@ - it realy stinks but it's a limitation of Valkyrie :D - Valkyrie uses @ for escape sequences, so to escape the escape character you need two of those (notice that it is allright on the post mortem screen!).

@Replays - yes, it's your scoreboard, because it's your game running someone elses replay, right?

Hello all. I'm new and i like playing Berserk! I think that Kornel Kisielewicz could  give some new features:
  -- More monsters,
-- A kind of level game ( like in the Sword of the Berserk ),
  -- New terrains,
-- Bonuses like Healing and Energy potions.

I thought also ( i know it is very hard to do ) but if Kornel could have make graphics to it, it would be very nice, i think.

Hello all. I'm new and i like playing Berserk! I think that Kornel Kisielewicz could  give some new features:
Hello, stay a while and listen :). And while you're at it, please post as much ideas as possible :)

  -- More monsters,
If you didn't notice -- each RC version of Berserk! brings at least one new monster. And I plan many more ;].

-- A kind of level game ( like in the Sword of the Berserk ),
Could you elaborate on that? I do not fully understand what you mean (I only played the Dreamcast version, the PS2 version will have to wait for a hardware upgrade :/).

  -- New terrains,
Comming ;].

-- Bonuses like Healing and Energy potions.
You DO have Fairydust ;]. As for more -- I don't want to go overboard with this, because it might destroy the balance of the game...

I thought also ( i know it is very hard to do ) but if Kornel could have make graphics to it, it would be very nice, i think.

I just tried this new version, and I had like 4 phasehounds on day 1:P I won't post the mortem as I feel ahsamed of living only 2 days - but I'll take a try again when I have some more time and post something :)

EDIT: In fact, should I be given the option of what I create for my first exam, my first project will be a Warhammer 40k/Space Hulk RL. Wish me luck all, and some of you (such as Adral) should expect some pvt messages asking about any fluff or backstory I may be missing. :)

Good luck with that. And don't be afraid to ask - I'll try to help with whatever I can, for the Holy Emperor of Mankind! :P

But I just had 3 Wraiths at level 1, and it was not fun, I actually had to use a fairydust at level 1. Rec and mortem as attachments.

I also had skeletons coming at me from a direction with no corpses at the beginning.

Wraiths when generated have a couple of skeletons as a entourage -- it's so made to help the player realise quicker that a Wraith is approaching.

As for Wraiths on level 1 in the next version that won't happen (wraiths will appear no sooner then on night 4).

Wow, this is realy something! I encourage all to download the record -- it's realy fun to watch :D. There were at least 3 times I tought you were done for, with the huge horde of skeletons... but each time you managed to get out with a cannon blast :D.
