In the hands of a berserk melee-build doomguy, the spear one-shots arch-viles more than 50% of the time.

Yeah, the Longinus Spear with Brute 4 and Berserker is devastating to anything and I think JC's hitpoints are scaled based on difficulty level, so in this case, they were lower than "normal."

As for envirosuits, there are three of them on the level itself, so you can often do it going in with one, especially if you can get a lucky phase to take you part way.  (The phase device won't put you in lava, so you should appear on one of the islands)  If you're playing non-Nightmare!, non-marine, two envirosuits are probably preferable, otherwise your boots might get eaten a bit.  :)
