Would the B*FNG have done enough damage to kill shamblers? They seemed exceptionally resilient in the past, but that may have been a good thought.
And running... that may have been a good idea too, except my original plan didn't involve movement, and I half expected to be berserk once they started hitting me. I suppose Shambler projectiles don't do quite enough on their own, and it's just the sheer number that hit that did me in.
Speaking of running, does Dodgemaster apply to multiple incoming single projectiles? In other words, could I have just kept sidestepping them, and letting them kill each other off? I suppose even if it worked I would have taken some damage from bad angles, though.
Plasma shield might have helped - it did take some of the edge off Arachnocaves, but yeah, it got chewed up pretty fast, and I'm not sure how long it would have lasted here, but it may have kept me alive. Yet another thing I didn't consider till too late =P Also, I didn't know what kind of damage they did - for all I knew, it could have been piercing or acid or something, and the plasma shield would have got me killed even faster.
Still, I know for next time. I think I may give 666 another shot, for two reasons - first, it will be more fun to get Centurial Platinum that way, and second, it'll bring me a lot closer to Armorer Platinum. Between those badges I'll be promoted again, and while that's probably not the fastest way I can go about picking up badges, I do like AAo666 better then other game types.

It counts as using an item, so therefore it takes time.
But in the case of the Hell Staff, I think it's more about it being flat-out risky (implying phasing isn't already risky) than wasting time. You land, you find out that your landing spot sucks, and you need to run but you can't because the Hell Staff you just used ate your ability to run. Even if you were running when you used the Hell Staff.

Not a clue how none of them managed to proc berserk... that probably would have allowed me to survive and not have to teleport.

Berserker trait is basically useless in this situation. You were not just unlucky:
If you really need a hit to take off 1/3rd of your max hp to trigger berserk, that is 20 as a marine. Bruiser brothers are basically hell barons with more hitpoints. They do 4d5 damage, so it is quite rare for them to do 20 damage (1/625).
The situation is much better as a non-marine. Depending on how the rounding works you would have 5%(for 17HP) or even 10%(16HP) chance to go berserk.
