Add Darkness event

Acid flood, lava flood, targeting...

why not add one more special event like a AoD? not for whole game, but at random level. Everything becomes dark, your vision fades for -1 tile (and restores again on exit to next level), enemies ressurects and you get 2X experience per kill

While the current darkness system only makes me want to quit the game, I like the overall idea.

0.9.9.6 AoD was better, for me. The new (or call it old) one only gives me headache.

I do like the idea of a darkness even - but without resurrecting, at least on lower difficulties and/or when AoD itself is yet locked. First, it would definitely be an unpleasant surprise for beginners. Second, it's almost guaranteed to ruin a YAAM status, unless you're good at corpse disposal. For example, Marksman Platinum (AoMr UV YAAM) attempts would be ruined by this event.

about YAAM - who worried about it past get all YAAM-badges? So, you need only 1 successful run, then no matter how many monsters stay alive. Random events quite rare, we can play 3-4 times and even not see lava flood level, or frozen one. The same true for any event ) Well, if you make attempt for Marksman Platinum - you fail. But can repeat and repeat, dark level not guarantied every run.

I prefer to YAAM whenever possible - if for no other reason then having an accurate count of monsters remaining.

I don't really like the idea, but I suppose it's no worse then some of the other brutal level events.

You could just make it that the level is dark or even darker than normally dark, no need to respawn really.

Well ... Yeah, you need only one successful run. But having it broken, say, on Hell 7 after two hours of playing (yes, I know, I"m not exactly a speedrunner) would definitely put me off for quite some time as terribly unfair.

The difference between other level events and this one _with respawning_ is that, for the particular level, it imposes challenge rules you did not go for in the first place. The other events are just about adaptability. Hard walls? Reliable cover! Soft walls? Don't rely on cover, kill quickly. Lava flood? Run to the other end.
This one, having it's own challenge, is just too much.

Without respawning, it's still harsh, but at least playable. You clear some area? You have at least a good chance nothing shoots you in the back.

PS: Same as Sereg - I go YAAM whenever possible at all.

I think most pepole try to get YAAM when they can.
Btw, it's not necessary at all, and may even remove some fun aspects of the game, since running through is something completely different, but clearing levels completely feels like one achievement.
Also, skipping monsters, like skipping (non-dangerous) special levels, reduce your char efficiency. Sure, lvl 3 or 4 can be enough to win the game, but lvl 18 definitely makes it easier.

And I got to agree with ZicherCZ : in a normal game, you didn't sign-up for respawning monsters. While I'd personally love having such a surprise, I know it would really be a bitch for someone not used to dispose of corpses, especially on some hard challenge. I'd be in favor of adding respawn only in N! difficulty but.... yeah, it doesn't make sense anymore :)

Simple suggestion : nerf the darkness event to reduced vision (-2). No headaches with map or respawns, just reduced vision, this looks quite fair, doesn't it ?

Only if you make things stop respawning =P

Or, as a benefit for already playing that particular challenge, that level event should have no effect on an AoD ;)

Yeah... you don't get two nukes at once in AoRA sometimes, do you? I think a darkness event would be nice, and there were very dark levels in Doom BTW, so it makes sense. Respawning would be a bit overboard though IMO.

For AoD, I tought it wouldn't occur (AoRA comparison is exactly the example I'd have given)
Of course, it could reduce vision even more, but I don't think this would make much sense, even on hard difficulties.
