I've been trying to get an Angel of Max Carnage off the ground for a while. The game says that it's "Easy," but it took some actual adjustments in my playstyle to get it to work (probably because I was worse at playing before.

I figured that the huge accuracy bonus would probably make AoMC very fun with a chaingun build, and the fact that any hit would do serious damage would make a dodging-heavy style useful. The final deduction, that made this game lots of fun, was that I could easily shoot at off-screen monsters since accuracy was so high to begin with. To facilitate that, I chose a Scout (for Cateye and early Intutiion).

I grabbed the Arena's chaingun, and thought it would be pretty good, but the game really took off when I found a minigun on Phobos 5. Yes, Phobos, not Deimos. I could basically kill anything up to and including hell knights with one volley. It was so good that I had to use the trick of starting a chain fire, then immediately breaking it off or I would have run out of bullets somewhere in Deimos.

Once I upgraded to a burst minigun cannon, I could kill anything besides a boss in one volley. At that point the game became about saving enough bullets to make it to the next former captain. I feel really dumb about not taking the nuclear plasma rifle I found in the Vaults.

The title mostly refers to the situation on screen. If you look at the message log, you'll see that John Carmack was MORTALLY WOUNDED. If just one or two more of my rounds had hit him instead of the revenants surrounding him, this would have been a YAAM/YAFW (Carmack's summons don't count toward the killrate, right?) instead of a YASD. I dd get a partial win, so that's a bit of consolation. The title also refers to my record of a 44-kill spree, my own personal record and mostly one-shotting everything before I even saw it. I was pretty close to my first UAC silver star, and blew it in a dumb rocket mishap.

Mostly I posted this to marvel at my incredible luck in drops (TWO miniguns, four missile launchers throughout the course of the game) and my incredible bad luck/stupidity in the Hell Fortress. Also, is a chaingun-dodging style the "right" way to do Max Carnage? I was trying to improve my strategy, but I'm not sure if I could have won without the lucky minigun.

There's more than one way to go about AoMC I guess, especially if you use something like a shotgun to 'tag' enemies into walking into your field of vision. Personally, I prefer MCe as well, but then I usually start with INT-INT to have an early advantage at seeing stuff coming.

I remember seeing a melee AoMC somewhere, but that must have been 2Dev so it doesn't count.

Hm, now that I'm looking up JC's behavior it turned out that what I did was the absolute worst way you could do it. I had DM, so I should have just walked around his rockets and blasted him in the face the way I did with my first full win. He would have only summoned lost souls until I started firing, instead of revenants and barons of hell. I didn't do it like that, since I thought all the lost souls he summoned were just because of being on ITYTD, not (as it turns out) a function of his health. At the very least, I should have shot him while he was in my eyesight, especially since I wouldn't have been within his, MCe and all.

EDIT: Also, is the lack of Mastermind's Brain intended? Do you actually have to kill her without a nuke to get it?

Yeah, I think so, same goes for Cybie & Cyberdemon's Head. You can have invul, but no nuking.
