72 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 69 of those were killed.
And 3 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

--------------------------------------------------------------

I should've used my shotgun and corner shot.

I should've used my missile launcher.

I should've gotten Int 2 sooner so I could be more effective at both.

I should've used the shiny BFG I just got for the first time.

But nah, just decided to let sleep get the better of me and DAKKADAKKA'd in his face while he bashed mine in easily.

So then I ran, tried to get to that corner so I could try using my super shotgun to keep him off me. Underestimated the splash of his rocket.

However, quite proud of myself, got 6 levels deeper and 50k score higher than any my second highest score, on a higher difficulty, with a weapon type I'm least used to, and just kinda winging the traits. :D

You're definitely making progress, and going on HMP is definitely make you learn the game faster. Keep it up, I can see a YAVP coming soon from you! :)

Take a red armor next time for the fight, as it confers fire resistance. If you know the assembly, make it fireproof for a total 55% fire resistance and 4 protection on top - with that, you can withstand _much_ more punishment from Cybie (plus, it helps greatly against Viles and revenants as well).

And ... Why no advanced or master traits (except Juggler)? Feel free to experiment with your build, sure, but since you're learning, you might want to play it more conservatively and go for some master trait or other. Masters do indeed make a difference.

Cybie is a beast before you learn to deal with him. The two best approaches are dodging all his shots with dodgemaster (with practice, it becomes trivial to kill him without taking damage) and getting a lot of protection and blasting at him as fast as you can (this one overlaps with melee).

Int 2 and cornershooting would probably not helped that much, since A) cybie can see farther than most monsters, B) he shoots at your cover if you try to cornershoot. It's still preferable to eating rockets directly though.

Save that red armor from Phobos Anomaly, and consider making it fireproof, as has been said. Just remember that fireproof armour actually increases melee damage taken, so keep your distance if you have it.

I don't entirely agree.  Back when I was still learning the game, my best runs were masterless.  Speaking from my own experience, I didn't start winning until I started taking levels in Ironman and TaN to help prevent instadeaths.  That helped me stay alive long enough to learn what tactics were best to avoid damage altogether and then I started putting levels into SoB instead.  I didn't start heading to master traits until I was fairly skilled at the game, because when I was a beginner, going for master traits invariably got me killed.

If going masterless helps you get further, then I say keep doing it.  Depending on your preference, you might want to put off experimenting with master traits until you've won once or twice.  The nice thing about this game is that it accommodates a wide variety of playing styles.

Good luck!  :)
