[M|AoMr|96%|YAFW] My first full win ever.
« on: September 09, 2013, 17:06 »

Originally, this was just a "lulz let's try a challenge" kinda game, but when I started having some serious success with the Storm Bolter pistol (was trying to assemble a combat storm bolter, but never got the last technical pack :() I kept going, thinking this might actually be doable.

The game took a little bit over 4 days to complete. I didn't have time to play for extended periods of time, and I wanted to play only when rested and fully alert, so there was a bit of excessive amount of saving during Deimos. I pulled through all of Hell in one sitting. I had a BRUTAL amount of luck in the Mortuary. I was debating whether I should do it at all, but decided that I could at least test it. Four of the Viles spawned right outside the entry area, and I had intuition so I could see them. All dead, only one risen Hell Knight. The last I had to fight through a bunch of mobs to get to, but once he was dead, it was a matter of killing all the mobs and I got my Angelic Armor. Sweet!

Oh, also the visit to "The Wall" was cut short by me running out of energy cells for the energy pistol. There were only two blocks left to shoot, and I would've gotten in. But oh well, some other day.

When I got to the Lava Pits, I realized I was carrying two envirosuits, and also had environmental boots, so I cleared that and got the lava element. Suddenly I found myself with a kickass pistol, good build, angelic armor, a nuke and a lava element.

Hmm.

Boom goes the Mastermind, and I descended. The last fight was probably way too easy, because JC spawned a bunch of Lost Souls on his first spawn, then was "Almost Dead" when he spawned a group of Revenants, then instantly teleported out of the group, and got his face full of bullets, ending the fight. I was REALLY thinking I would run out of 10mm ammo, because the last 5 or so levels had literally no formers whatsoever.

All in all, great run, and I did not expect to make it all the way down, but I'm glad I did. Next time I will not be visiting the Mortuary unless I'm carrying TONS of skulls. It was a very hairy proposition and made possible only by the lucky spawn of the viles.

Nice job. Just a few opinionated opinions from my end...

1. You had two points into Whizkid but the most advanced assembly I see in your equipment is the environmental plasteel boots. Good on ya for making them, but it might be a better idea to save that one point for Hellrunner, or if you had sufficient EXP levels, a 4th level of Son of a Gun. SoG 5 is hilarious.

2. If you're aiming for Brick Silver, the easiest way to get that without having to rely on RNG being nice (implying) is on Angel of Shotgunnery, by making a plasmatic shrapnel shotgun of some description. It still requires you to get a Sniper mod before Wall, but now that Wall/Containment Area appears after Deimos Lab/Hell's Armory, your chances of getting that exotic weapon mod is a bit higher than having to rely on the RNG giving you enough phase devices and not throwing you right in front of the wall that you're trying to leap over.

3. I think you meant M for your title, not N. N is Nightmare! difficulty. :)

Yeah, once I hit Sharpshooter and Intuition 2 I was kind of at a loss what to add. I was considering Hellrunner, but felt I was doing fine with survivability. It wouldn't have hurt, of course...but thanks for the tip! Whizkid was mostly experimenting this time, to see what I could make, how it worked and such. I've never really gone for WK before.

This is what I realized as well after pounding the wall with my pistol for a bit. I didn't really like the energy pistol anyway (compared to the Storm Bolter) so I figured I could waste it on the wall just to see if it was doable. In the end, I kinda missed it since I started running out of ammo :P

3. I think you meant M for your title, not N. N is Nightmare! difficulty. :)
Ahem, yes, totally. Slip of the finger there, I edited it. Either I missed the "M", or I was thinking "Normal". Not sure which :D

I think WK is great to pick up only as a Technician since you can literally add it whenever you want/need to. I can usually find sufficient reasons to have one level of WK on a standard run, but unless I'm already carrying the mods I need for master assembles, I typically don't bother with WK2.

You'd be surprised at what more speed does to your survivability. I won't claim that more speed means you live longer, because it doesn't.
More speed can get you out of trouble quick.
More speed can also get you into trouble real fast.
But Dodgemaster is a great trait to have, regardless of how careless you play, so as long as you know how dodging and sidestepping works.

You need patience to play MSs.  The early game of MSs is tricky since you are still at the mercy of the RNG.  Not having DG means that you have to rely on firing more shots from your single pistol before your pistols magically become OP.

Once you get MSs, knockback becomes your friend.  Unlike DG, you don't waste bullets when you deliver knockback on the enemy, since you are always firing single shots.  So MSs shines when you have enough patience to get there.  =)

Yeah, I've never even got to the point with a pistol where it like, knocks back stuffs. What are the general, like, mechanics behind pistol knockback?

An ordinary pistol can start knocking enemies back when you get SoG 3 or 4, I forget which. But knockback with ordinary pistols is definitely possible with SoG 5.

Knockback happens when you do more than 12 damage (or something).  So if your max damage of your pistol is that number after adding in SoG and what have you, you will consistently do knockback.  Now, if you have Dualgunner, if the first pistol knocks the enemy back, the second pistol will miss, which means you can only do the damage of one pistol if you have a lot of knock back.

But for MSs, knockback is clearly your friend, since it keeps the enemy at bay while preserving your ammo count.

Ah, don't hijack mortem threads like that -- post it as a new mortem and then add a link to say that you were inspired by this one.
