So uh... the last time I played Ao100 was a good long time ago, and since I told myself that I shouldn't play on difficulties less than HMP, here it is!  Ao100 on HMP.

I had wanted to do an MSs run like the last time, but I kept running into a wall at floor 14.  I just kept dying there; it seemed as though I wasn't scaling up my damage enough or something.  So I got annoyed.

But then I rememberd the MCe build I used for my HMP YAAM run.  It was a very successful build, relying mostly on the Gatling Gun as the primary weapon until the last 9 floors where I just spammed plasma everywhere.  I'll extract out that build and the one I used here and place them in alignment:

  SoB->SoB->Int->EE->TH->MCe->SoB->Int->EE ->TH->Fin->

  Int->SoB->SoB->EE->TH->MCe->Int->Fin->Fin->WK->WK ->SoB->SoB->SoB->Fin->HR->HR->HR->DM->TH->Iro->

Notice that the first 6 traits up to MCe were more or less the same, except for that initial swap of Int and SoB.  I was blessed with an early Combat Shotgun, which helped immensely as I was slowly building up my resources and traits to run the MCe MOAR DAKKA build.  Unfortunately, Bulk mods were in scarce supply, while I had stashed away some early Agility and Technical mods in preparation for the Hyperblaster, the slightly more ammo efficient version of the plasma rifle.

But I had to bide my time a little.  Scouts require slightly more set up to get 2xWK, and I had to take 2xInt prior to that to ensure that there are no surprises for me.  That explains the relatively early assembly of the Hyperblaster compared to the Gatling Gun.

If I was under the impression that ammo consumption was "cheap" in the MCe build on HMP, I was quickly proven wrong on Ao100 HMP.  I was always on the verge of running out of ammunition, be it 10mm or power cells.  If not for that super modded minigun (439 magazine size), I would have been annihilated a long time ago.  My P-modded Gatling Gun was, together with 5xSoB, sufficiently strong to take on the later mobs -- almost everything went down in two volleys.  I didn't use the super modded minigun for mainstream firing duties because of the whole ammo shortage problem -- using 2 more bullets per volley added up really really quickly in the long run.

I played relatively conscientiously up till 2xWK, after which I started to slack off.  By the time I was taking HR and DM, I was practically getting bored.  Rev-Vile packs were a dime a dozen, and Man-Vile packs were just as ubiquitous.  Barons were a joke under the volleys, and in between juggling the use of either the Hyperblaster or the Gatling Gun (depending on which ammo had more stock on the level) and the ABP-modded red armour and Cerebus Boots, it was starting to become a cakewalk.

Until floor 98.  OMFG.

Shambler cave!  I was soooooooo glad that I had an Invulnerability Sphere that I had snagged prior to entering the level.  That invulnerability bought me precious turns in which I spammed all the weapons I had.  Bloody Shamblers kept on teleporting next to me, and it was just utter chaos for a good while.

Then my invulnerability ran out.  And I had only 2 large med packs.  Fuck.

I teleported using a phase device -- it helped a little but not much.  Shamblers are really terrible to take on in open areas -- they can just swarm you and you will die, ABP-red armour notwithstanding.  I snuck into a corridor and picked them off as much as I could.  By the time I was done, I was down to like 1 stack of 10mm and maybe 2 stacks of power cells.  There was a vault of Cacodemons that was left, but I noped my way out of the level.  I just wanted a Ao100 win damnit, not be yet another dead hero.

Cerberus boots are really ridiculous.  They are so ridiculous that I totally forgo the use of Nyarlaptotep's boots, something that I rarely do.  Apart from the Hell Staff, I didn't really use much of the uniques that I had found on this centurial trip.  The last 10 floors were probably the most exciting, and more than made up for the rather lackluster middle floors that I had to grind through.  Power cells and 10mm get chewed up at an astonishing rate when dealing with many hard-to-kill Vile groups -- this is something that is not so apparent in a normal 24-level run through.

And like the title suggests, I got really bored at 100 levels.  How the hell does one slog through 666?

That one save?  I had to move computers from the office (ahem) to my home one.

Meanwhile, merry Christmas.  =)

How the hell does one slog through 666?

One doesn't, if one can help it :S

How in the seven hells were you able to nuke so many levels?

Thermies were, surprisingly enough, relatively "common", and invulnerability spheres spawn quite frequently as well.  I tried lugging one or two thermies with me as insurance in case of an invulnerability sphere -- free XP for all when that occurred.  I wasn't saving up the thermies for anything special -- just used them as and when it was easy to deploy.

There's something I didn't quite say in my post.  I was lugging about a case of rockets, a rocket launcher, a combat shotgun, a box of shells, and a single stack of shells.  That was 5 inventory slots, mostly before I built my gatling gun.  When I found the missile launcher, I ditched the rocket launcher and rockets -- these were used for breaching purposes, and 4 rockets was more than enough for all my breaching requirements.  Actually, as we got deeper, the circumstances for requiring breaching were practically non-existent.  You got a lot of those large warehouse like rooms, or the tightly packed two-room lava monstrosity, usual "Hell town" layouts.  Very few mazes with rivers of whatever in between.  Come to think of it, I should have dumped the missile launcher when I had my cerberus boots.

I kept the combat shotgun for as long as for insurance.  Once the 10mm ammo situation was stabilised (minigun + B-mod anyone?), I ditched those quick and had more room.

All in all, I suspect this is because we never really tried balancing HMP -- we just interpolated between HNTR and UV and hoped for the best.

And much like the original Doom, HMP gets the least play time in general. Everyone is always on the the fringe difficult levels.

True, but throughout my sporadic 0.9.9.7 game plays, I find that HMP serves as a nice "veteran's HNTR" difficulty.  It's harder than HNTR, so it forces one to use one's experience from DoomRL, but it is still easy enough that it is waay more casual than UV or N!.

Over time, of course, almost everyone will drift towards UV and N!.  It's just the way things work.  But HMP is in such a sweet spot for out-of-practice veteran players like me who still enjoy a casual game but without the near-guarantee of winning that HNTR/ITYTD provides.
