[M|AoI|YAAM] Getting back in action - again
« on: April 08, 2014, 07:14 »

As for the rest, yeah, it's been surprisingly quiet lately!  Is anyone even playing DoomRL lately?  :|

Inspired by Tormuse's  not exactly inspirational words, I decided to dust of DoomRL again and tried getting back into action. After a number of lousy runs (Ao100 MSc - killed stepping into a puddle of lava on my way to the invul globe that was going to save me // AoI Scout: got splattered by an Arena Master that JUST.WOULDN'T.DIE. // AoI Scout - picked Brute instead of SoB, thereby fucking over my chances of the MCe I was aiming for) and
I decided my next victory would indeed be the elusive Angel of Impatience. The third time - right after the two abovementioned fails - was once again a charm:

--------------------------------------------------------------
DoomRL (0.9.9.7) roguelike post-mortem character dump
--------------------------------------------------------------

 Nils Bloodaxe,
level 11 Hell Baron Major Scout,
defeated the Mastermind at the City of Dis.
He survived 114043 turns and scored 99803 points.
He played for 2 hours, 30 minutes and 57 seconds.
He didn't like it too rough.

He killed 503 out of 503 hellspawn. (100%)
This ass-kicking marine killed all of them!
He was an Angel of Impatience!

 He saved himself 2 times.

51 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 25 of those were killed.
1 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 4 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

 21 souls destroyed the Mastermind...
4 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
16 killed the bitch and survived.
1 showed that it can outsmart Hell itself.

--------------------------------------------------------------

I had tried this challenge on a lot of previous occasions, too, but never even got to the Anomaly before this run. Unsure which builds I did previously, but of course Cateye served its purpose beautifully. Managed to do a lot of levels with low/no damage, but unfortunately my streak remained at 48 - on level 23, 46 kills and counting, I was deposited between arachnotrons on the left, and two arch-viles with mancubus support on the right, and no spot to take a good position. Or maybe there was, in hindsight, and I just couldn't be arsed running further.

Finally crossed the 25K kill mark - also first ever Arch-Vile rank - and now only 2 Bronze short of the full set (Hunter and Quartermaster). Tempting as it is to go for these two, I really dislike both challenges, so instead I think I'm going to switch back to UV standard again, try to improve my skills. And how knows, maybe I can squeeze out a Shottyman, Marksman or Lightfoot Gold sometime soon...

Nice win!  AoI seems to be everyone's least favourite challenge.  (next to AoP)  My view of it is that it's a lot more luck-based than other challenges.  In a normal game, it's nice to have med packs and phase devices as back-ups in case something goes wrong, but here, you just have to hope you're lucky enough to have some nearby.

I've never really had the patience to complete it, (heh) so kudos to you for that!  :)

Well, on HNTR it becomes a lot more manageable of course. I took it beacuase I wanted to get warmed up and lay my hands on some medals in the process. Besides AoI, I only had AoD and AoRA to choose from, and those are the ones I'm really not looking forward to...
