The Matter of Splatter
« on: March 07, 2007, 05:24 »

Topic name courtesy of Exhumed.

"The foo dies" and "you hear the screem of a freed soul" seems to me insufficient for a gore/horror game! There's blood on the walls and floors, blood tracks and corpses, but for a death there's hardly a "thump".
Now, with dying screems this is admittedly less of a problem, but since we are discussing implementing aids for the deaf, I think it is certainly in order to add .ini toggled descriptive death messages. I don't think it would be going too far to give a different resulting message for each weapon crossed with each monster/type. In the event that this idea is accepted and that help will be needed, I will immediately begin thinking up descriptions.

since this is going along with my own request for sound substitutes I naturally agree - great idea! :)

I don't know if different sounds for any weapon/monster combo wouldn't be a bit much, but at the very least weapons like RL, BFG should have unique splatter-messages THEHEHEHE

Acid and lava should also at the very least get different messages.

You hear a scream, followed by a crackling sound! - death by lava (lava = fireish, right?)
You hear a scream, followed by a sizzling sound! - death by acid

Ever blistered badly, or just fried something? Sizzling goes for lava, too :)

Screems are for off-screen kills. I think those should stay as they are, keeping LOS your source of accurate information.
What I'm talking about is "the former human's riddled with bullets", though on a much more graphic level.

I'll start writing down my ideas off-forum, and put them here when I'll have a serious bunch. Expect them within the next 4-5 days.

BTW, if any of you have a Fallout installed with an advanced game in progress, or otherwise have access to the descriptions, if I recall correctly there're some really good lines to draw from. Unreal Tournament goes too, but that I have quick access to and can take care of.

Screems
Screams for God's Sake!!! ;) .

I get your point. Do you mind a brainstorm?

"Imp falls under pressure of your 12 gauge shotgun"
"Imps torso is nailed with 10mm bullets"
"Imp is blasted by the rocket, with size of his head"
"Imps body falls about, filled with lead"
"Power Cell leaves imps bloody corpse on the floor"
"You tear imp apart with your bare hands"
"You cut imp to pieces with your chainsaw"
"You take your knife from imps dead body"
"Imp couldn't resist holy power of Longinus Spear"
;)

Anyways I think it would take too much place, though the idea sounds Ok

Yeah, sorry, that's a miss-correction of myself.

Do I mind...? That's the whole point, man.
And that's a hint for all you idle readers :)
Also, and possibly more so, post your opinions on the lines people write here. The smallest changes to them can make or break the feeling they give.

Each off-LOS death gives a line about that length. I don't think there's any harm in having on-LOS deaths resulting in short sentences, too.

Still a relatively short length line, comparing to what you suppose. Not that I don't like the idea of having neat descriptions of monsters death. Bloody Hell, here I come!!!

To be quite frank, I intentionally didn't comment on your brainstorming (and won't for a while), as I want others to sense and react to the need of opinion. I think there is much more to be found in a combination of several to many opinions, than in the opinions of two or three of us. Plus, I honestly and deeply love the creative process, and can't appreciate it the same way when it is influenced by my hands :)

That said, I just spent the last few hours mesmerized by wikipedia articles on daemonology, especially when they drift away into D&D world stories. The Blood War's fascinating, and reading that the Illithid empire brought it to a hault, as the Lords of Hell and demon princes contemplated a joint effort against them, literally had me laugh in admiration for a second, then I stopped suddenly, in awe, as the meaning and implications struk me.

Well, not as productive or witty as I had hoped yet. It'll take me a while longer to make a good list. I've also come to agree that a sentence per possible kill will be really difficult with such short sentences. That's why eventually I'd like to see an option to switch between simple "the foo dies" lines, short descriptions and long descriptions, where long descriptions will be 2-3 times as long as the short ones, appearing either every kill or with a ~30% probability. For now, I've been trying to keep sentences short and mostly to the point, with the exception of knife and fist kills.

SG short-range kill:
"The foo is blasted wide open"
"The Lost Soul is blasted to a fine, red paste"
"The Cacodemon's head is torn clean off"

SG long-range kill:
"The foo is freckled with led"

Dual pistol/CG 2+ hit:
"The foo is riveted with bullets"
"The foo is made a holey martyr to its cause"

Pistol/CG 1 hit:
"The foo has a new third eye installed"
"The former foo's spleen/lung/prostate is flung across the room/nailed to the wall"

BFG:
"The foo is now but ashes and dust"
"The foo is a smudge on the floor/stain on the wall"
"The foo smells like chicken"

Fists:
Former Foo - "You smash man with hands!"
Demon - "You crush shaved gorilla with fists"
Arch-Vile - "You bash fire-man with bare hands. That hurt."

Knife:
Cacodemon - "You sever the Astral Dreadnought's tail with your Silver Sword!"
Baron - "You righteously flay the Pit Fiend with your Holy Avenger!"

If it will be implemented, there should be an option to turn it off.

RE "You blow the cacodemons head right off"

The cacodemon is a head! :)

Some of the suggestions are a bit cheesy but they would be fun to play with even for just one game.
