Forum boards notifications not working as expected

While I seem to get mail notifications when a new topic is created in a board I subscribed to (or at least I think), I don't get notifications when new messages are posted in already existing topics as I did before the forum went under maintenance a few days ago. I tried unsubscribing/resubscribing but it didn't fix the problem.
