AliensRL 7DRL Released!
« on: March 18, 2007, 15:42 »

Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am proud to present AliensRL, my entry for the March 7DRL competition. Although I didn't manage to implement all that I wanted into the game, I still think it satisfies the "playability" requirement, and also is in it's own way unique.

The main inspirations were the movie "Aliens", the game "Alien Breed:Tower Assault" and to a little extent "Space Hulk".

I could write a lot about it's development and design features, but why not try it yourself?

A Linux version is possible if there will be enough interest. Sources are ugly, so I keep them for myself :P.

Anyway, enough chitchat, play the game, dammit! ;]

Brilliant! I'm giving it a go right now!

EDIT: Initial impressions:

Ooh..music!
Level generation..takes a while so I reckon the levels will be pretty large...
Krak and Frag grenades? Gotta love Wh40K..
M41-A Pulse Rifle? Check..

I'm a little bit disappointed that technical skills are not in as of yet, but I'll wait with interest!

I'd love to help with this, is there anything I can do?

You really had to release this the night before my linear algebra final? Fuck.

So I played one quick game (if I play any more I know I'll get sucked in an never study), and I have to say, this looks encredibly cool. The music and color scheme and sound and the fact that you can wonder around these big levels all make it very atmospheric. Heck, I even dig the the level load screens. My one gripe so far is that there doesn't seem to be a way to read a description of the aliens or items. As I remember Deadcold has these bits where you first see an enemy and a little screen pops up describing your reaction to it. That might be neat.

Good music by the way. Where's it from?

You know what would be cool? If you could play as an android. Or if you could meet up with other marines and fight with them in tandem, or a character creation system like system-shock 2 where you choose several tours of duty that determines your stats, or....um, yeah. I really need to go study now. Damn. *Resists temptation to go play game again*

I think alien descriptions might be too harsh on player imagination, and therefore on the atmosphere (which, I agree, is GREAT). Char reaction on first encounters, on the other hand, could be incredible - especially if they're based on char stats/equipment. A HW Specialist with an AT Rocket Launcher should be glad to blast open a slow, well-armored target, while a hunter could set in him a slight panic. A scout would react very differently.

Come on! It doesn't want to unpack it! It says something about some kind of a CRC error. Anyone else encountered it?
