Well, yeah, but Horos was asking how 2Dev does what he does...

You know what?  Fuck it.  I'm gonna go ahead and acknowledge the elephant in the room...

2Dev cheats.  There, I said it.

I didn't want to say it for a variety of reasons...  This forum operates by the honour system.  We have to assume that everyone is honest unless proven otherwise, because if we start throwing around accusations, it poisons the atmosphere of sharing in celebration of achievements.  Also, frankly, I didn't want it to seem like I'm being petty or belittling the "competition" or whatever.  (Besides, it's not like I can prove that all of *my* achievements are legitimate)  :P

But I guess I've decided to break my silence on the issue...  partly because this topic is repeatedly asking about it, partly because 2Dev's account has been deactivated for quite some time now, partly because interest in DRL has waned quite a bit in recent years, especially with Jupiter Hell coming closer to coming out, and well, I guess I don't care enough to keep biting my tongue any more.  :P

But I want everyone to know that I don't make this accusation lightly...  A few years ago, someone (privately) requested that I compile a list of reasons for thinking 2Dev might be cheating and I threw together a partial list which I'll copy and paste here:  (I'm sure I can add more to the list by request)

Spoiler: The List (click to show/hide)
--- Quote from: Tormuse ---You want the list?  Challenge accepted.  :)  This will take some digging through forum archives...

First off, he had a sudden, huge spike in playing ability...  (actually, make that a gargantuan spike in playing ability!)  A while back, I neatly summarized his win-loss ratios in this post.  Note that he used to have a very average win-loss ratio up until around his 1200th game and then he suddenly started putting out Diamond badges every third game.  That's conspicuous in itself.  (Compare that to my more gradual climb up to 1 in 50 games, if I can use myself as an example,  ;)  which people still consider above average)

Then, when you factor in how fast he plays, clearing out ~30 levels in less than an hour, (average <2 minutes per level, two thirds of which are populated by late game enemies at N! difficulty) it gets even more incredible.  I can fully accept that there are people out there with above-average hand-eye coordination, or even super human seeming reflexes and abilities, but no matter what 2Dev says, N! games do require a degree of luck and going at the speed he claims to, he's bound to lose more frequently than he lets on.  Why don't we see any games where he loses?  At the very least, I'd say he has to be altering those numbers of games in his mortems.

Then, come some of his more outlandish mortems, like this one, where he claims to conquer Hell's Arena at N! using nothing but an unmodded Combat Knife without Berserker trait and calls it straightforward!  (Also played at break-neck speed, of course, playtime of one hour)  Hell's Arena at N! is tough even with the best of equipment; the enemies just revive too quickly.  Without being berserk, trying to use melee, the Cacodemons, Demons, and especially Barons will chew up Doomguy in nothing flat.  You're telling me he did it without even slowing down to consider what to do?  (It's also worth noting that the mortem has victory messages for five of the special levels, but the mortem only credits him for finishing 3 of them; the result of a sloppy editting job perhaps?)

Or how about this one, where he conquers Hell's Armory in a N! AoPc run?!?  No...  just no...  (excuse my language) shut the fuck up, no.  There are 33 enemies on that level, including the Shambler, all of which have the potential to regenerate due to N! difficulty.  He claims that he maneuvered the Shambler between himself and the Commandoes.  Well, even if the Shambler stayed put long enough to be pounded on by them without teleporting, (which it never does) it has scaled hitpoints and regenerates, so it would take a *lot* of pounding to bring it down, not to mention the fact that logically, if the Commandoes can see you to shoot at you, the Shambler will be shooting at you too!  And he didn't have Dodgemaster or even Hellrunner, so there's no way he could survive such a pounding.  And even if he somehow, miraculously pulled that off, how is he going to deal with all the Cacodemons that come from all directions and don't lend themselves to crossfire?  Or the Barons?  Or the Commandoes and Captains?  Or the mother-(excuse my language again)-fucking Revenants?!?  (Those guys' homing rockets can't be avoided and you're bound to take rockets to the face at the best of times; how could you possibly stand in their presence long enough for them to be killed in crossfire without being killed yourself?)  Oh, and lets not forget that he completed that game in less than an hour, so I guess he pulled off that impossible feat without stopping to think about how to do it too.  And lets also not forget that he shrugged it off like it was no big deal and didn't take any effort or was even at all unusual.

Next, there's the fact that some of the strategies he suggests don't make sense or are just, frankly, really crappy.  The one that stands out in my memory is this one.  (Scroll to the top of the page to see a link to the image he's commenting on; those are Hell Knights in the image, but he refers to them as Barons)  He suggests "bouncing the [Hell Knight] back with the shotgun" and then turning attention to the other two Knights.  His description implies that he doesn't expect to take a pounding from the Knight, which incidentally, would take 5 or 6 shells if it was at point-blank range, or more at the range shown in the picture.  What does he mean "bounce it back?"  Knights are faster than you, so even if you knock it back, it will get several shots on you as you reload, and the other two Knights will start pounding on you too.  The strategy he describes will almost assuredly get a player killed and makes me seriously question his playing ability and experience.

Finally, there's the fact that he once, plain, outright admitted that he was altering his mortems to add in badges that he believed he deserved to win, as shown here.  Well, maybe that was a one time thing, but I admit that it does contribute to my willing suspension of disbelief about everything else he has ever claimed to do.

I can probably come up with more, but I think this is a good list to start off with, off the top of my head.  :)  If you don't mind, I'd appreciate some discretion about who you share this with; again, I don't want people to think of me as being petty or jealous or belittling my competition or whatever.  Really, as far as I'm concerned, 2Dev and any other player on these forums can do whatever they want.  It doesn't really particularly bother me and all of the above are just observations I've made over the years.  I'm curious to hear what you think of it, though.

Tormuse

P.S.  Oh yeah, I almost forgot the time he got the Iron Skull medal in an AoHu game!  :P

So, there you have it.  Of course, I can't prove anything so maybe I've got some backlash coming my way, but maybe this will at least liven up the forums!  :)

And now that I've probably damned myself by breaking a sacred rule of the forums, I might as well go ahead and say that the way to wield the Dragonslayer is...  *Tormuse is suddenly sucked into an unholy void*

I admit that made me giggle loudly. Thanks Tormuse, now everyone at work thinks I'm weirder than they already did.

Sylph:
Just to shoe in - Tormuse is right. For me it was the mortem that claimed that 2Dev cleared the spider lair on angel of purity damageless using only the chainsaw.

More importantly - the seasoned doomrl players kinda 'know one another'. At least in so much as they appreciate strengths and weaknesses as people edge towards the skill ceiling. 2dev has been absolutely absent from strategy discussion, and demonstrates a poor understanding of it they few times he replies.

It's a shame to say, but in posts requesting information I always just say 'ignore 2dev's posts'. The cheating kinda 'poisons the well' of information when the best doomrl players are giving someone advice, but in the back of the newbies mind there's the thought 'surely 2dev knows better'.

Anyway, I don't really enjoy this sidetrack of a very interesting topic, so sorry to have waded in. Just didn't want Tormuse to feel he was the only one - someone needed to say something outside of PMs.

Tormuse:
*Tormuse's voice rings out of an unholy vortex*

THAAAANKS FOR YOUR SUPPOOOOOOOOORT!

*The unholy vortex disappears*

Moonshine Fox:
*dispells unholy vortex*

I think you're fine, as long as you promise to not finish that sentence you started. Welcome back, Tormuse!
