I had a fair few games before getting this far, and reckon what was holding me back somewhat was a desire to be armed to the gills and highly experienced before taking on the queen. In the end she actually was something of a push-over, a couple of blasts from the smart gun and she was out of the running.

Unfortunately I was fairly low on ammo when I reached her level and so was ill prepared for the descent, that and the fact that I had paid little attention to where the elevators were didn't help me live too long afterwards. It became a scramble for medikits and ammo, but it didn't work out to well.

I've found the colt to be a particularly useful weapon, and not only against juveniles, but also against hunters and warriors. The combat shotgun is reliable enough until the elites start showing up, and then you really need to switch to the pulse rifle unless you have managed to pick up a smart gun from somewhere.
Fairly often I was taking out elites with krak grenades thrown one space behind them when they were standing next to me - a somewhat improved strategy compared to centring the grenade on them and taking the splash damage yourself.

I plundered the low levels of the storage and military towers so as to give good stocks of ammo, and then started climbing in earnest, taking a few trawls through the higher levels of the military tower in search of a smart gun and some gyro armour. In the end I think I found them in a storage level.

Skillwise I boosted the sidearms and light weapons skills initially, and then took more ranks in them when I could afford them. Once elites started showing up and medikits started getting consumed at a ferocious rate I pumped the medical skill a touch. As someone else has said, if you fall below five kits you should rethink your strategy. Most of the time I had a full compliment of ten, but when you eff up, get ambushed and zipped in they can run out awful fast. I took the heavy weapons skill just before hitting the queen's level, but reckon any effect it had on the result was pretty minimal. Fitness skill came from the apparently large (3000+?) pool of points for killing her. I grabbed those ranks in an attempt to prolong my survival during the descent, which was mostly just a case of trying to run away from everything. One thing I've learned is that closing doors after you on the ascent will likely make the descent much easier.

It would be nice to have an option to drop armour - it would be useful for when you discover something like gyro, but don't yet have a smart gun, so that you can stash it somewhere easy to find, rather than just leaving it where it lies in a maze of rooms.

I found a grenade launcher in the game before this one, but was less than impressed with it as a weapon - it required several rounds to take out even a juvenile, and having to reload after each shot didn't exactly endear it to me as a weapon of choice.

No sign of an incendiary grenade yet. Have they actually been implemented?

First of all congratulations on your partial victory, and welcome to the forums :)

Yes, the queen is kind of a pushover once you've got the proper equipment. It's the descent that is supposed to kill you off.

Making a map during ascent helps.

Drop armor? Yeah, I think that may be useful.

Grenade launcher needs to be upped a bit :|.

Inc grenades haven't made it to the 7DRL unfortunately :(.

I was just coming back here because I'd forgotten to thank you for the game, so thanks.

As for the descent next time - forewarned is forearmed.
