--------------------------------------------------------------

Inspired by Icy's escapades, I thought it'd be prudent to brush up on my own skills once more. I have a second copy of The Game That Shall Not Be Named running on another machine, which it turns out I only played 3 games on some two and a half years ago. I wanted to do A100, but since I was too light for that one, I thought I might as well try and get myself shot really quickly and play MSs on AoMr. However, apart from having to look up a couple of assemblies, it actually went pretty well. Crap I even squeezed an Untouchable Badge out of this one, lord knows how. I can count the number of times I got that one on the fingers of one hand. After a horrible accident at the sawmill.

Anywho, I was hoping to find some kind of awesome pistol of course, but no such luck. I started out with the speedloader, and switched to a high power version once MSs kicked in and I had enough ammo chains to back me up. I skipped the arena - naturally - but did go for the Chained Court, the Military Base, the Amory and the Halls of Carnage - after finding a ballistic shield next to the stairs leading to it. Afterwards, I found the duelist armor to slap my onyx mod on, which gives a nice combination of speed and guaranteed protection.

I was dreading Cybie pretty badly, until this happened on Deimos 7:
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

And then the bastard was only two squares out of my FoV to top it off. After that bit of luck, I decided to just go for it and not get shot too badly anymore. In the end I left a vile and a couple of revenants alive on Hell 6 (lots of lava and a teleporter). I probably could have taken them, but in this case I'd rather beat spidey than risk throwing it all away on that unholy threesome. Two near deaths - the shambler and a revenant - but enough med-packs and cover to retreat and regroup.

Thrilling game all in all, considering I didn't go for the easiest possible game and still beat it pretty sweetly. Yes, my standards are pretty low. I've learned to love myself for it, and you can too. Time to give that A100 another go. If I ever have about 8 hours to spare.

P.S. what's the best build for AoD? That's just about the only challenge mode I've put off for more than five years now. Tips would be welcome.

A fortuitous run to be sure, especially with the Cyberdemon - he is a right bastard for pistol builds - but nice job regardless. Arena is a pain, but it should be fairly manageable for pistols on HNTR, although to be fair my own play style is such that I tend to spam runs over and over again till they go my way, so early deaths don't bother me very much. If you just wanted to get a solid run going without a lot of early frustration, then you made the right call skipping that level.

Well done - hopefully we can see some more from you soon, too ;) hell, I might even fire it up again myself, although I don't really have the time for the challenges I really want to attempt...

Props to both you and Icy for getting some activity going, and I hope the trend continues.

As far as AoD, I don't generally touch that one myself - I find it extremely frustrating(along with AoHu). Perhaps Tormuse will pop in with some words of wisdom for you.

On HNTR, yeah. On UV (and possibly HMP) it should be possible to have DM, making a damageless encounter pretty feasible.

Arena is a pain, but it should be fairly manageable for pistols on HNTR

That's a philosophy I'm having a little trouble with. With a vanilla pistol and SOG 2 tops, this has always smelled too much like pushing your luck to me. How does one pull that off?

Hey, nice one, LuckyDee!  :D  Good to see some more players on the field; makes me want to contribute too.  :)  (I mean I still attempt Everyman Angelic now and then, but maybe I'll try something a little easier, just so I have something to post)  :)

P.S. what's the best build for AoD? That's just about the only challenge mode I've put off for more than five years now. Tips would be welcome.

Cateye with Int 2 at the beginning.  You still have to be really careful, though; until you get Cateye, any of those pink stars you see can potentially already see and start shooting you!  :o

Thanks! I thought there was some penalty to INT as well, but I'm not sure. How would a melee build do in this challenge I wonder...

Honestly,  this is probably just bias from playing almost exclusively on U or N!... I tend to assume that if I can do something there,  it's got to be much easier on H or M. I forget about the experience penalties keeping you underleveled and the fact that the ammo and powerup multipliers are restricted to E, as well as the fact that much of my gameplay is about spamming attempts to eventually achieve a success.

So you're probably right about pushing your luck with the arena - it's honestly not that much easier on M then on U, at least for a pistol build, and when you're going for a single successful run, not just the specific goal of Arena completion as AoMR, it's a very big gamble with not a lot to be gained.

Thanks! I thought there was some penalty to INT as well...

The same penalty as to your vision; your vision is reduced by 2 and the Int2 range is reduced by 2 along with it, so the Int2 range ends up being what your visual range normally is.  So if you can see a pink star, they can already see you.  (Unless there's a wall between you, of course)

How would a melee build do in this challenge I wonder...

Well, the enemies' range is gonna be greater than yours in this challenge regardless, so melee does about as well as in any other challenge, maybe even better with the benefit of the experience boost.   just charge in the direction that shots are coming from.  :)

Honestly,  this is probably just bias from playing almost exclusively on U or N!... I tend to assume that if I can do something there,  it's got to be much easier on H or M...

Yeah...  I kind of get that too; I'm used to being character level 3 (close to level 4 even!) by Hell's Arena.  I think the lower difficulties are still easier overall, though; being a lower character level just means you need to be slightly more careful with your corner-shooting and enemy isolation tactics.
