Greetings and a Backpack Question
« on: May 06, 2007, 14:08 »

Hello there!

I've been hooked on to DoomRL for quite some time now, so I figured it's time to drop by and say hello.

Right now I'm trying frenetically trying to re-unlock all the features of the new version :)

Oh, and blasting my way through The Wall I stumbled upon a "Backpack" (dark yellow ^). Couldn't find any note on it on the forum or the Wiki. Does anyone know what it does exactly?

Wait, so it's in the Wall? No wonder I never found it: Both AoB and AoMR, which I've been playing on lately, prevent me of using rocket launcher, and even when I don't play with those, my primary rocket launcher source, Hell's Arena, has once again become impossible. I swear, Hell's Arena becomes more difficult in each version: Now even those cacodemons never miss me, even on coward.

I had quite a good run, through Arena, and ended up both Supercharged and Berserking in The Wall, with an inventory full of rockets and medkits, so I figured I'll give it a try. Of course, after gloating over my freshly gained adv. rocket launcher modded to the teeth, to produce YASD two levels lover.

So, the Backpack was known to be implemented? In DOOM it allowed to carry more ammo, though it's been a looong time since I played that. :)

And yes, 9.8.7. seems somewhat more difficult than the last one. I seem to die at earlier levels, and character progression seems a tad slower. No evidence on that, though, just an impression.

The backpack is implemented, ja. It lets you hold more ammo, though not QUITE as much as it did in the original games. Still, more ammo is more ammo.

So no double ammo? No plasma bunches of 100 and 10mm bullets of 200?

More like a 40% increase in ammo than a 100% one.  And hey, that extra ammo adds up (but an extra BFG is still worth more in terms of plasma ammo :P).

It's also buggy, as unloading still uses the old inventory code (this is confirmed by Kornel). As long as you never try firing a weapon with more ammo than seems possible, everything should be fine. And dropping and again picking up ammo should fix things up when the numbers in your inventory go wrong.

It's ok to equip and fire weapon with more ammo than it can hold, i have tried it many times(another exploit, you can unload Rocket Launcher and get 5/1 Rocket Launcher)), something like overloaded RL)), but it will crush if you will try to reload it when it have more than maximum ammo.
