[M|ArchAo666|29%|YAVP] Pop goes the Apostle!
« on: January 24, 2021, 00:41 »

For some backstory, I've actually had some thoughts now of taking a break from this game, now I've bought Jupiter Hell and I'm likely to switch to that for at least a bit I figure.

...But this is something I really wanted to do: Try Archangel of 666, finally use the Dragonslayer + Berserker Armor, hit max level and take out the Apostle. So I thought I'd cross that off my list before switching to Jupiter Hell.

Build choice seemed obvious: I gotta be a Scout for easy stairdiving and I gotta have a melee Master since I'll be stuck with the Dragonslayer so Blademaster it is! Hellrunner came first since I wouldn't be going straight into melee (though I did get into Chainswording people earlier than might be strictly justifiable and it seemed to work out). After the Master, Finesse into Whizkid, Dodgemaster and Juggler seemed obvious. Of course after a while, I started picking up whatever seemed helpful since I was running out of things to pick. My very last level I grabbed Eagle Eye over Reloader since the former could be possibly helpful maybe, while the latter would be 100% pointless. I mean, Juggler obviously stopped being useful after I got stuck with the Dragonslayer but I can't say I was dearly missing an extra level of Eagle Eye.

I re-assembled the Chainsword after Whizkid so I could P-mod it, I think I had a fliud-related mishap that destroyed my first Tactical Boots so I had to rebuild them anyway... And ended up throwing away the A-modded pair because Nyarlaptotep's Boots were even better, it seemed. For a while I was lugging around an Onyx Mod, if I didn't find the Berserker Armor somehow then I was going to see if I could do the Cybernano assembly to add it to my list. Of course, that didn't end up happening.

I almost got screwed out of picking up the Dragonslayer
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

For a while I was stressed, first that I might have accidentally selected Angel of 100 instead due to the character screen and fake-out level messages... Then I was worried that I might have missed the Berserker Armor thanks to the annoying Berserk screen filter making it hard to see what anything is. Thankfully that didn't turn out to be the case and I was able to snag it! It kind of disappointed me at first because I thought it was protecting less than my Cerberus Gothic, but I don't think the math holds up on that and not needing to worry about armor durability anymore was awesome! I will say I initially misunderstood the formula and the Protection worked the exact opposite way I thought it would.

When I got the respective gear I dumped out weapons and then armor, eventually Mods too. Then I stockpiled Large Medkits to be safe, plus Phase Devices to aid with stairdiving and nukes in case I got Invulnerability so I could just clear out a level and go straight to the end (weirdly when I did that to Level 616 the nuke went off immediately without a timer. O.o Thankfully I was already invincible when it did. I wonder if there was some deliberate thing happening there since that's the fake "number of the beast".)

As far as tactics, I mostly started stairdiving after getting all my gear but for a while I would seek out enemies just to make doubly sure I got to Level 25, and even to the end I often sought out healing items I saw just to make sure I was good on health. I kept picking up Uniques though, mostly just to pad my item list, though the Hell Staff was genuinely handy as a free extra phase in case I didn't like where I started. I also think I ran into two Hellwave Packs (used the first off the ground, then came across another that I picked up) but I'm pretty sure I misunderstood something unless I ran into an odd bug there.

Nightmare Arachnotrons swarming around me were the closest I came to actually dying, but my stores of medkits helped me anyway. A common annoyance later on were those multi-line messages I had to Enter-mash through to keep moving.

When I got to Level 666 there was some kind of flash or explosion or something that killed the enemy I saw and blue-texted but I looked anyway and found the Apostle! ...And got an error message (preserved in my Mortem).

But it still registered, getting me the Medals, Arch-Vile rank and a hilariously inflated score topping my scoreboard.

For as long and tedious as it was over multiple sessions, I still enjoy the accomplishment of having done this quite a bit, and I can't rule out ever doing it again either. It's just kind of neat to be so overpowered and carefree in this game, as a contrast to how I usually feel on it.

Any slog through 666 levels deserves some congratulations, so...  congrats!  :D  I suggest you spoiler-tag the part about the conditions for wielding Dragonslayer.  I know this game doesn't get much attention any more, but Kornel did request that people do that after that information became public knowledge.

It kind of disappointed me at first because I thought it was protecting less than my Cerberus Gothic, but I don't think the math holds up on that and not needing to worry about armor durability anymore was awesome! I will say I initially misunderstood the formula and the Protection worked the exact opposite way I thought it would.

Once you've got DS and have a permanent 60% boost to all resistances, I'd say it kind of doesn't matter what armour you're using any more.  :P  (Though I suppose having 95% to all resistances could be an interesting novelty)  :)

(weirdly when I did that to Level 616 the nuke went off immediately without a timer. O.o Thankfully I was already invincible when it did. I wonder if there was some deliberate thing happening there since that's the fake "number of the beast".)

Nukes go off instantly without a countdown if you drop them in acid or lava.  That must've been what happened.

I also think I ran into two Hellwave Packs (used the first off the ground, then came across another that I picked up) but I'm pretty sure I misunderstood something unless I ran into an odd bug there.

This is really interesting to me.  Uniques aren't supposed to appear again once you've picked them up, (which is why it's a good idea to always pick up Uniques, even if they're ones that are useless, since it increases the chances that the next Unique you find will be one you want) but what you're saying suggests that if you use the Hellwave Pack directly from the ground, that gets around that.  Huh...

When I got to Level 666 there was some kind of flash or explosion or something that killed the enemy I saw and blue-texted but I looked anyway and found the Apostle! ...And got an error message (preserved in my Mortem).

Yeah, it looks like the Devteam never actually tested the Apostle to make sure it works properly.  :P  It consistently gives an error message when you kill him.  That's probably not going to be fixed for a long time, if at all, since they're all working on Jupiter Hell now.

Thanks! And already, tried to do so now.

Certainly any more than 35% resistance would be overkill that wouldn't actually count (if I'm getting it right, it's capped at 95%), though of course the most important trait would be raw Protection.

I do think I had a bunch of resistances that were less than 95% in the Berserker Armor, would COULD account for getting more damage than in super-Cerberus gear but even that seems dubious with the BA having more Protection.

Oh I see, I didn't realise that was a thing. That's almost certainly what happened then. Hard to make out terrain with the combination of the red-filter making it hard to see what anything is and Cerberus Boots that stopped me taking damage from any of it.

Huh...

That seems to be what it suggest, assuming I noticed/remembered it right and didn't get mixed up, of course.

That would make sense, I wouldn't expect too much active playtesting with how obscure and tricky it is to get to him. Just glad it didn't crash the game or invalidate my save and such.
