Instead of having to look at them, why not have them tell us where they lead to when we step on them?

Maybe... but if you don't look carefully enough, the > can look alot like a }, and it'd be ncie to have at least some kind of notification when you're on a staircase.

I agree.  Quite often I spend too long looking for the red stairs in an empty level amongst all the blood and items.  Sometimes items even obscure the stairs.

I always check out the grayed out part of the map for stairs before exiting a level, since nothing obscures them there.

Yes, which is really what I use, because i scout the whole level before leaving.
