Well, I wasn't actually arguing against Ironman, but that a melee char should take Hellrunner instead of TaN, because of an already good source of protection. Also, sergeants only do that much damage from point blank range. Though Hellrunner doesn't help against autohitting sergeants other than you reaching them faster thanks to faster running. But there aren't that many of 'em, or shouldn't, but Murphy knows that there are...

You do know that there is a minimum damage of 1? Cause in melee games after you'll get the spoily weapon of mass destruction, additional armor after wearable armor is most of the time useless, but Hellrunner lets you evade those points of damage completely AND will get you to enemies faster, where you will just massacre 'em.

Hellrunner is also highly useful for evading those high damage ranged attacks completely (I had only 1 level of it, though evading while moving is already pretty high, but Cybie managed to hit me only twice in my AoM win). And for Shottyman, you will be evading much more attacks while moving, so it's much better to move than just sit still and reload if there are nasty monsters ready to fry your ass.

YEY! I finally managed to do this, though the newest beta's weapon mods did help, as they allowed me to get defensive some defensive traits in place of speed and reload traits. Perhaps I could have avoided all of Cybies missiles with some additional levels in Hellrunner.

I'll explain the weapon mods in my pistol here:
D2 - 2 damage mods, each increasing the damage die by one.
R3 - 3 reload mods, resulting in 0.6^3 reloading time
S2 - 2 speed mods, each giving 10% boost, so 2 equals rapid
M3 - 3 magazine mods, I don't know how these are calculated, but I got my clip increased by 2 for the first two, and the last one gave 3.

Trait order: SoaG(3) --> Dualgunner(1) --> Finesse(1) --> Ironman(1) --> Hellrunner(1) --> Ironman(2)

My fight against Cybie went a lot better than my last try. Last time Cybie spawned allmost right next to me, this time he was further away and I could get some room between me and the walls, so that dodged missiles wouldn't do any damage. I shot him 3 times after he reloaded and just to be safe startet dodging after that, and then started shooting again. Got some cover for reloading, cause my secondary pistol takes way too long to reload (ofcourse I could have just reloaded my main gun and forget about the second one).

Spent 1 phase device when Cybie destroyed stuff from around me to get more cover and 1 med-pack when I was on half health just to be sure, since I have bad memories about Cybie doing something like 35 damage with a single missile.

I'd like to note that there's already Reloader and Shottyman for shotguns, so I don't see increasing shotguns' damage as a priority, but I do agree that Finesse and SoaB do need advanced traits to make 'em better, like something allowing you to shoot additional bullets with chaingun and plasma rifle for SoaB (this was suggested by someone on #DoomRL some time ago).

Finesse would also need some boosting to itself.

I'm not sure what you mean here... AoM already starts with an advanced pistol, why would you want to change that for something else?

Because right now rapid pistol would be much better. If you read my post at the AoM thread, you'll see that with correct traits it will only take 56 (or even less) energy to shoot with a rapid pistol in main hand. Shooting a normal weapon with no speed traits takes 1000 energy, so you could shoot almost 20*2 bullets in the time that you normally only shoot once. Though this does not include reloading, which takes a total 2400 energy (or 24 turns), so it isn't actually that fast. But still, I'd much rather have a rapid pistol as my main weapon with the current speed system than an advanced one. I could always use the advanced one as my second pistol.

Well, I actually had crash like this some time ago, but it said "critical error 255" or something. This happened while I had DoomRL runnning on background while doing something else, and the game did not save. If you have IRC logs available, you can search for "critical error" there.

This made me think that i was right when thought, that Intuition isn't good perk for AoM. On UV you surelly will be able to reach level 10, which means Fingerzam perks + 3 more, and this will be enough to kill Cybie, imho. The only problem is to reach Cybie's level without Intuition, on UV it it quite hard. Damn, when i will have some time to play, i need to test it!

Well, this is the main reason that I play NTR and not UV. Without Intuition it's too common to find myself in a desperate situation where a caco blows up a wall and I find myself fighting 2 barons, 2 cacos and some demons in an open space. If you have phase devices, you can survive these, but without a phase devise it's gonna eat your precious meds like they were candies. And without some meds (I have had 7-8 in my last few fights against cybie on NTR, but those single shotting hits kill me), Cybie will prove difficult.

Of course, if you can manage to make it to Cybie with a lvl 10 AoM and some meds, it shouldn't be that difficult anymore.

I'll collect here some possible solutions to AoM being so damn hard. Well, actually the only big problem in AoM is dealing with Cybie, I can get most of my characters there easily on NTR.

  • Let the player choose his/her starting weapon
  • Place special pistols to Hell's Armoury, so that the player can choose pistol(s) of his choise
  • Let the player switch his/her main weapon on the go
  • Make Dualgunner a 2 level trait and/or add +dmg and/or reloading bonus to it
  • Add those weapon enchancement things you were talking about at #DoomRL

If both 1 and 2 would be implemented, the player would first get a pistol of his/her choice at the beginning, and could then get another pistol of his/her choice at Hell's Armoury.

There was also some talk about an additional advanced trait adding more dmg to pistols, but as I see it, an AoM already takes a shitload of traits to work properly (that is, shoot at least 3 times per 1000 energy) and reloader is also a must have against Cybie.

The biggest problem in this is that you will be fighting Cybie with default hitpoints and no TaN or you will be taking a lot of time reloading those pistols against Cybie.

I was again 100% sure I could kill that bastard, but didn't. This time he single shotted me from 54% with a [4/4] red armor. If I calculated correctly, he did 35 points of damage with a single rocket. Got him to seriously wounded before that, and still had some meds and a phase devise.

*God damn these have lots of hitpoints now. I had to kill one that was equipped with a large med and a red armor.

As for trait order, I went SoaG(3) --> Dualgunner(1) --> Finesse(1) --> Reloader(1) --> Finesse(2)

Some extra Reloader wouldn't have hurt, but I wanted to make sure that I would have my 7 meds and 2 phase devices with me still when I met Cybie and so didn't clear all of the last 4 floors. Completely skipped one Arach cave.

Seconded. I get myself into some problems every now and then when im moving instead of aiming because of an empty weapon.

On NTR it shouldn't be too hard with double shotgun and shottyman. Of course running out of shells makes I a bit problematic, but with enough shells you should be able to empty it without a big problem.
