Requests For Features / Re: Nuclear Plasma Shotgun
« on: April 25, 2012, 09:27 »
Blaster says nothing about being nuclear, just self-recharging. You can't make it melt down either.

Did you REALLY need Finesse when you have SoG5 already? I didn't think Finesse would have anything to add at that point, SoG5 should already drop your attack speed to the minimum. Shouldn't it?

Anyway, MSs once again proves how awesome it is. I should try a run like this myself.

Requests For Features / Re: Blood Rivers In Hell
« on: April 23, 2012, 06:22 »
Yeah, the rivers and lakes of lava that show up are both annoying and monotonous. It's not much fun when a thick river is generated in a cave level and the bridge happens to be deep in the walls instead of in the actual cavern area.

I was fighting the Shambler and hauling ass toward the exit on AoRA; the game says 40 seconds left on the countdown. Shambler kills me. Game crashes and spits this at me:

"DoomRL Crashed!
Reason: LuaError: beings[].OnAction -- Lua error: lua/beings.lua:897: Object expected as parameter 1!"

I'm running Windows 7. Error log attached.

1. It seems that ITYTD provides less overall XP; so when you get the big bads you're not likely to be able to take it without great equipment luck. This intentional?
ITYTD does seem like it has lower levels on average, but only because there's a lot fewer enemies; otherwise you get an EXP bonus. As for equipment luck, it's not required. I recently did a run where I killed everything with my bare fists, and fell only two enemies short of a perfect kill rate. This isn't because I'm good (Fuck no, I'm a terrible player), but because ITYTD is very easy.

2. Recently, I've never done the final stage of the Arena entirely because of Arenamaster spawning on Chained Court later. How are you supposed to even think of taking out an Archvile at that stage, not to mention a stronger than usual one? Of course, it was due to this I couldn't do the Wall. Perhaps I should do the final round, skip Chained Court, and instead do the Wall? What do you guys do?
The Arena Master is a tall order, but one that's doable. I like to start by heading right and killing the baddies behind the building (Where it's not possible for them to be revived if the AM comes charging), and then going back inside and slurping up both the berserk packs. While berserk, I can usually charge to the other end of the level and blast him apart before I lose berserk. 'Zerking gives you a major armor and speed boost, so you can ignore the formers unless you're caught up in a major crossfire, and just focus on taking down the Master before you're back to mere-mortal. You're still going to have to bring some health and armor to help, but it's certainly doable. After killing the Master you can take it low and slow, marching back toward the building and killing things one at a time. Or if you're out of gas, just grab the Staff and exit.

If you really don't want to deal with the Arena Master and aren't playing melee, there's no pressing reason to go into the Chained Court. Finish the Arena and skip the Court if it's bothering you. The chainsaw is nifty but not all that helpful unless you're putting some kind of focus on melee, and none of the other prizes are showstoppers.

3. Does dodging work at all vs. Mancubuses? He seemed to hit me alot!
Fatties fire sprays. If you're more than five-ish squares away, and there's nothing nearby for the fireballs to hit, you can usually dodge their fire and end up stepping between the shots. Closer than that and you can sidestep and still get nailed by the shots that would normally go by you. Better to retreat back from view and shoot at where they were standing; they don't move fast so you can usually hit them even if you can't see them, and they're not going far. Taking cover and cornershooting works too. Cornershoot solves everything... except Cyberdemons.

Of if you're absolutely crazy, start running and charge in. At point-blank, they're pussycats; they have decent melee damage but their speed is terrible. If you've got some close-quarters pain and can get close without being torn up, you can take them apart. It's risky but feels oh-so good.

4. On HNTR difficulty, is there any way to do the start of Phobos Anomaly WITHOUT needing a Phase Device? I've tried the tip of ensuring I've got RUN MODE active, but even then the Lost Souls manage two spaces towards you and it doesn't look plausible to make a run for it. To be fair I've had a Double Shotty character with Shottyman survive there, barely, but its harsh on anyone else.
Ugh, lost souls. I've heard if you have Hellrunner and remove your armor (To get rid of it's movement penalty) and run like hell you can get to the door without taking damage. Then you can deal with them without being surrounded. I usually just pack armor, health, and a lot of hate. Pistols are about the worst weapon to use on them, because they have a hefty resistance to bullets for some reason, but it's certainly doable. I remember doing it on a AoMr sharpshooter run (IE, with a single pistol), mostly because I had a billion health in reserve and the pumpkins were willing to explode half the herd for me. It'll suck though; phase would be my first choice, it's designed to get you away from bad situations like that.

5. Does Intuition ONLY see at the edges of view, or does it also work on anything you can't see? i.e. can it be used to help you cornershoot?
It works anywhere within range! I like using it to watch for things behind walls. I've stopped more than a few ambushes by "seeing" them around a corner. INT2 is fantastic at giving you an early warning buffer, it's invaluable until you learn the AI's habits. Still invaluable afterward; shooting bastards in the black is a wonderful thing.

Requests For Features / Re: Mancubus Experience Rank
« on: April 22, 2012, 01:33 »
This was actually mentioned in a Juggler thread about a month back; the whole "arbitrary use of quick-keys for Juggler" thing is intended to be changed or phased out. Juggler as-is can give anyone instant access to any weapon in their inventory, since you adjust what the quick-keys grab for. This is unintentional and we were told to expect it to be adjusted to, yannow, not work that way. So a lot of players think of it as kinda exploit-y.

One of the suggestions was to make Juggler a two-level trait, with the first working as actually intended (Swap equipped and prepared instantly, use melee from prepared if you have it) and the second level letting you get weapons from the inventory at the same speed. Another was just to keep it one-level but let people get stuff from the inventory at a discount instead of taking a full second (And again swapping equip/prepare slots instantly). Either way, don't expect to quick-key your way to a ghetto tac shotty in the next version, I guess. At least not without a second level in it, if they run that way.

Requests For Features / Re: Mancubus Experience Rank
« on: April 20, 2012, 14:19 »
I think Mancubi are a lot more dangerous than a Hell Knight; we don't tell horror stories of Hell Knights decimating you in a single volley, and a pair of Knights with an Archvile is only going to get attention because of the Archvile. Mancubi are a whole 'nother threat level.

Grabbing Berserker in non-melee games to take advantage of the resistance is a good trick, I'm going to steal that. =B

--------------------------------------------------------------

I still hadn't earned my shotgun badges back, and shotgun runs are just about the easiest to do (At least in my opinion), so I took the time to run one quick. Much fun was had.

First, Enviroboots are awesome. Eat shit, damage floors!

Second, this run had a perfect kill rate EXCEPT in the Mortuary. I love the Mortuary, it's my favorite level, but damn is it a drain on resources. I went in with two fire skulls and a shockwave pack and still only was able to clear out the left side. Looking at the kills I had, the right side had something like 70 goddamn monsters parading around, so I was probably better off having left when I did, but that dropped what would have been a perfect run of demon genocide to less than 90% kills. And it's not like the Assault Shotty was really that helpful compared to my combat shotty; I really should have just skipped it and kept my kill rate up.

Other than that everything went damn smooth. The only complaint I had was that the game threw about a billion Agility mods at me but only one two power mods and only one tech mod, but it made up for it by giving me onyx. I love unbreakable armor, it makes everything better.

With EE3 and INT2 it seems like shots into the darkness are damnably effective, especially with knockback to hold targets at bay. During a MSs game I was picking up computer/tracking maps and able to hit things across half the goddamn level sometimes.

MSs is great for battlefield control.

Requests For Features / Re: Alternate Achievements
« on: April 20, 2012, 00:52 »
I'd rather keep achievements as the sorts of things you actually feel kinda proud of accomplishing, not a random checklist of content to check out while playing the game. Technician and Armorer already are stupid "check out all the stuff" achievements instead of actually something to be proud of doing, I really wouldn't want more like those.

42
I think a lot of builds are more founded on an advanced trait, with the master trait providing a useful bonus to the advanced trait it's founded on. Like DG or Berserker; you get your ball rolling at level 3, while Sharpshooter and Malicious Blades don't really hit their stride 'til level 7. Getting to level 7 with those is harder and the difference in how much easier the game becomes afterward is steeper (Though that might just be because I play every damn game like it's Angel of My Chosen Weapon).

43
Sharpshooter builds are scary once they get rolling.

--------------------------------------------------------------

The Mortuary was the highlight of this trip. Holy SHIT was that a slugging match. I went in loaded for bear with a the Longinus Spear, a Red Power Armor, and a bulk-modded Cerebus Armor. I had a fuckton of health, and a pile of large medikits. I was frigg'n prepared, unlike last time I ducked in and tripped my way into a victory.

I darted to the right and managed to find/kill four of the 'Viles, but they had been busy and the resulting pile of monsters managed to eat my entire Cerebus Armor. When I finally turned west to deal with the last one, he'd had plenty of time to revive a fuckton of monsters and it took forever to find him. My health wasn't actually much of a problem; Vampire is disgustingly effective in the Mortuary. And at that point I'd swapped to my Power Armor; I'd carve up a few dozen monsters, then use whatever was left of my berserk to retreat toward cover and let my armor recharge. I could hide in the middle building, killing whatever chased me into the doorway, without letting myself get overwhelmed or giving them enough time and crossfire to kill my armor. And power armor recharges quickly enough that the 'vile couldn't revive as much of his army as I could carve away, and eventually he stopped keeping his army between the two of us. After I tore the last 'vile in half, I could take my time in luring baddies away from the pile and killing them a handful at a time. It was a hell of a lot of fun, frantic as it was.

So I managed to collect the Longinus Spear, the Angelic Armor, and the Trigun. Super angel action!

Too bad you can't actually USE the trigun or the nuclear plasma/BFG's alternate fire modes on AoB. I never found a nuke, despite having the lava element. That's twice now I've been entirely prepared for a full win, but didn't have a nuke option to open the path.

Anyway, between this run and the Tyson Sunrise run I've gone from an Demon Corporal to a Cacodemon Warrant Officer. Pretty fruitful for two runs.
