I put in a request for an autosave/game-recovery feature.  I don't know if it will be implemented, but I figure it's worth a try.

Firestorm doesn't work on double shotguns?! Yikes! I'll have to keep note of that. Thank you for telling me; I could have REALLY wasted a firestorm mod.

I didn't even know that Firestorm could be placed on a double shotgun, or any shotgun, before reading it here.  I imagine placing it on a Jackhammer would be pretty devastating!  :)

I imagine N! might make things favor a strongly melee build a bit more. You can kill respawning enemies over and over for Vampyre health boosts, right?

That's exactly it.  The sheer volume of enemies to kill (and re-kill)  ;)  in Nightmare make it possible to be berserk ~90% of the time.  I might go for Shottyman in a later game to see how it compares, but building up Iro/TaN/Bru seemed to work pretty well this game.

Requests For Features / Autosave/Game recovery feature

(Someone suggested I request this)  I'd like to request some means of recovering games that are lost due to power failures or other computer difficulties that cause loss of the game for reasons beyond the game's or player's control.

I was recently playing Angel of 100 on Nightmare and a power failure shut my computer off and I seem to have lost the game.  :(  (Or if there's a way to recover it, I don't know about it)  It takes me days to play a single game of that, because I can't play through all 100 levels in one sitting, and I can't save it due to Nightmare difficulty, so that means I have to leave the computer running with the game on for days, hoping that nothing goes wrong with the game or my computer during that time.

I'm thinking perhaps it could autosave the state of the game at the start of each level and delete that autosave when the player dies/wins/quits.  That way, if there's a crash or something, you don't lose all your progress.  The mortem would then state if a crash occurred and what level was recovered.

I understand that this might cause people to abuse the feature for savescumming on Nightmare, so I understand if you don't want to implement this, but if it keeps me from losing my Onyx-modded phaseshift armour that I had in the game I just lost, then I have to try.  :)

Ah, that explains why I was able to do it once.  I thought it was a bug.  :)

I wish you best of luck on the game recovery, but I don't think you can recover - only if DoomRL crashes will it try to save.  Maybe an autosave should be a feature request - the save would be deleted when you die or quit of course.

That would be a really good feature to have, especially since Ao100 on Nightmare takes a long time!  I can never do it in one sitting and I have to leave the computer on all day for days.

I sure hope I'm able to recover it; I had phaseshift armor with power, agility, and onyx mods on it, so I was super fast and super well protected, and it was only a matter of time before I won.

ARGH!  I was just playing another Nightmare Ao100 melee build game that was going even better than this one, (level 42) and there was a power failure!  :(  Does anyone know if there's a way to recover my game, or is it lost forever?  :(

Looking at your mortem, I also have to say that slapping a firestorm mod on your plasma rifle was a waste. Without EE you can't hit shit with a plasma rifle, so you're just wasting more cells with each shot. The double shotgun would have benefited a lot more (especially if you had gotten shottyman). Alternatively you could have gotten whiz kid so you could combine the firestorm mod with agility mods, or better yet made a hyper blaster and then slapped on the firestorm pack.

I agree that it was a waste. In my defence, I put the Firestorm on toward the end when it looked like I was about to die and I figured I needed whatever edge I could get.  (I was down to 16% health, out of med-packs and cornered by Revenants and Arch-Viles; I don't know how I survived that situation)  I'm pretty sure that I can't put additional mods on assembled weapons, so I don't think going for a Firestorm-modded Hyperblaster would have worked anyway.

It might have helped to specialize in a secondary ranged weapon. I've tried the melee build in Ao100 and I find that I have the most success by going for shottyman or dualgunner after getting Vampyre (or else whiz kid 2 if you're really lucky with mods). Use your ranged weapon on the difficult enemies, switching to melee to build health and conserve ammo. Like when you have easy kill opportunities or get a berserk/invincibility powerup. I think you need to work on having a strong ranged weapon option before adding on TaN and Ironman levels. I find that TaN especially tends to be less effective against late-game enemies and isn't worth more than one or two levels.

I'm not so sure; I find I die more often if I don't put levels into TaN and Iro.  That could just be a reflection of my playing style and it might mean that I'm not careful enough, but the way I see it, melee builds tend to take more damage and so I need as much protection as I can get.

I switched between the knife and projectile weapons throughout the game, depending on whatever situation I found myself in, but I was definitely using the knife way more than anything else, so much that at one point, I was throwing ammo away to make more room in my inventory for med-packs because I wasn't using the ammo anyway.  (And I had maybe 10 or 11 med-packs at the time)  One thing that really helped the run was a suit of duelist armour which I held on to for quite some time and was very useful for the speed boost and melee damage protection.

Also, it's worth noting that the new Arch-Vile AI is a pain in the ass for this build.  :)

I was trying for a Vampyre build and it was easier than I expected.  Once I got the Vampyre trait, things went mostly pretty smoothly, even though I was using an unmodded combat knife up until level 28!  (Seriously!  I didn't find a single bulk or power mod until then!)  Naturally, Pain Elementals became an excellent source of healing, so things got pretty ridiculous when I found a Pain Elemental cave and I was wading through a sea of lost souls that couldn't attack me fast enough to do any damage.  That's why more than half of the kills are lost souls.  :P  (Too bad there's a cap on how long berserk lasts; otherwise, I would've just hung out there until I had enough to last me to the end of the game)  :)

Levels 32, 33, and 34 were Arachnotron caves.  If not for the resources I used up there, I might have won this one.

This was a fun run; I'll have to do it again.  :)

Nano mod on level 1?  Wow!  :o

- Scavenging my original plasma rifle with A1T1N1B2 gave me a technical mod :'(

Yeah, I've found Scavenger to be pretty unpredictable.  It can be very powerful if it gives you unique or exotic mods, but otherwise you can't really rely on it.  Recently, I was trying to build a Storm Bolter Pistol, and I scavenged an assault cannon, hoping to get the Firestorm back but got a bulk mod instead.  :|  Later, I had everything I needed except for a bulk mod and I scavenged a gatling gun, and got a tech mod instead.  (Grrr!)

So, I decided to browse through the Wiki to figure out which secret medal to try for next and decided on the Gargulec Medal.  :)

I might have gotten Conqueror too if I had found at least one phase device, but as it was, I had to skip The Wall, which was a shame because there was an invulnerability sphere next to the entrance which would have been an excellent opportunity for a Brick Silver badge too.  Oh well...

I took levels in Whizkid because in a previous game, I was able to add a power mod on to a Chainsword and I wanted to see if I could do it again.  No such luck.  I was also disappointed that the Malicious Blades trait wouldn't let me two-weapon the Longinus Spear with my chainsword.  I guess they both have to be "bladed" weapons.  Oh well again...  I kind of like the image of wielding two chainswords anyway.  :)

Had to post this just because it was so much fun.  :D

With my speed and the Malicious Blades master trait, my enemies could barely touch me and most of them fell from one round of my two chainswords.  Even the Spider Lair was a cakewalk; I didn't use a single med-pack there!

It would be tough to actually get up to that master trait in an actual berserker game, since you can't get berserker trait, but it was fun to play with for purposes of this run.  :)

Funny coincidence, I was going for the exact same thing, Sunrise Conqueror, yesterday.  I died on level 21 to a group of Revenants and Arch-Viles.  I should've phased away from them, but I didn't think of it at the time.

I got lucky on this one; there was a berserk next to the Unholy Cathedral.  I just charged through past all the lost souls and demons and took out the Angel of Death first and still had enough berserk left to kill most of the demons afterward.  Longinus Diamond, ta da!  :)

My luck ran out at the mortuary, though.  I probably would have got destroyer platinum if I hadn't gone in there, but there was an invulnerability next to it, so I couldn't resist trying.  My energy-shielded vest was surprisingly resilient to mancubus barrages, but as soon as it was gone, they pretty much insta-killed me.

I've done that a few times, picked up the chainsaw for the berserk bonus and switched back to knives or fists and still got the badge.  Good luck with fists only; on ITYTD, it's actually easier to get than you might expect.

Yeah, I had never tried starting with SoB before, and I guess it worked surprisingly well!  It'll be a while before I try again, I think; I killed two days playing this and I have to try to break away from this game and get out more.  You made this game too addictive, Kornel!  :D

Were the melee weapons useful enough just with juggler and no brute/berserker?

They were helpful from time to time, especially if I happened to find a berserk or invulnerability globe.  I was trying to assemble a double chainsaw, but I couldn't find any power mods.  The irritating thing is I found tons of power mods before I found the chainsaw, but threw them away because I couldn't do anything with them.  Murphy's law, right?  :)

I did the same thing the first time I got to Cybie in AoPc Nightmare, nuking him while invulnerable only to find that I couldn't defeat JC.  I thought the same thing as you, that maybe I could maneuver him into a crossfire and get him to injure himself, but no such luck.  I don't think it's possible without a second nuke.  Unfortunately, you don't get the Pacifism Badge if JC kills you.  (I found that out the hard way)  :|  Still, getting to JC in AoPc is fun for the novelty value.  :)

I think people aren't getting HR so they can get the Pacifism Diamond Badge.  :)  HR is generally quite useful in AoPc, especially if you can get the FireAngel Master Trait so you don't take damage from explosions.  (Although, you would have to play as a scout to get that now)
