Let this be a lesson to you: READ THE ACTION LOG, especially if you're playing Console. I thought I was on solid ground, hence my dying with three medpacks on hand.

In a departure from my own tradition, I was aiming specifically for Scavenger instead of aiming masterless. It's not bad, but I think I prefer pistols and the myriad ways to amp up their damage (Scavenger is one of a small number of master traits that doesn't block both Son of a Gun and Son of a Bitch, and you need Eagle Eye for it anyway so you may as well at least go one round in the Arena). I was honestly surprised that I got through the Arena, though that can probably be chalked up to me finally having learned how to play this game.

Level 4 was a mess, just as advertised. If I hadn't taken the teleporter (it was on purpose) I would not have died on level 4... teleporting into the waiting arms of a Demon that's standing in an acid pool isn't exactly fun, but I (hopefully) won't make the same mistake twice!

Fresh install of Doom RL after several years of not playing. Time to relearn the basics. I still prefer console mode over graphical mode.

I took Tough As Nails as my opening trait instead of my customary reloader, and it made a huge difference. I wound up dumping my shotgun and shells when I ran out of inventory space, which really sucked since I found a double shotgun on the next floor.

As for why I was still wearing the green armor instead of the red? I didn't expect to descend into a crowd of lost souls and panicked.

So after basically not playing for three versions due to a number of factors, I decided to do a few ITYTD warmup games. The most recent one was a Classic Mode module run (the mortem file's timestamp is 3/19/2013, if anybody's curious). I decided to go the Pistol route, seeing how it had served me well in 0.9.8.10 and 0.9.9 - I was quite happy to get as far as Cybie.

Now to do some runs on higher difficulty levels.

Off Topic / The NEW Horrible Ideas Thread

Not just for DoomRL ideas anymore...

So I had a funny idea for a Horrible Ideas Thread post, but then I came by and saw that the Horrible Ideas Thread had been locked. Which is a shame, because the HIT was probably the funniest thing on this site other than some of the mortems. So then I figured "Why not make a new one? One to cover all the Chaosforge roguelikes, not just DoomRL!"

So here we are, with the first Horrible Idea of 2013:

DoomRL - Angel of Chaos and Archangel of Discord.
One of the more bizarre experiments got loose. Nothing makes sense anymore.
Even though it had been suggested over a million times, Angel of Chaos takes the standard Roguelike formula of not automatically knowing what the letters represent and applies it to the items - basically, it randomly assigns a new color and letter to each major category of item: new icons for melee weapons, guns, boots, armors, medpacks, and powerups; new colors for the individual variations, exotics, and uniques. Is that purple 3 a pistol or a blue armor?

Archangel of Discord is that but with the enemies included. Is that blue c on level 7 a demon or a baron?

So yeah. Not DoomRL specific, but I'll use it as an example.

Even though the difficulty settings for DoomRL scale in such a way that each difficulty setting is roughly twice as difficult as the previous one, the difficulty of the actual game seems to... do something different. Yes, challenges can change where the lumps are, but for a standard <100% game that's not on Nightmare we all seem to have the same chokepoints:

Dungeon Level 3
Phobos Anomaly
Character Level 6
Dungeon Level 15
Tower of Babel
Dungeon Level 23

With everything else only being 'slightly' more difficult than what came immediately before it, special levels notwithstanding. Of note is that the game actually becomes significantly easier after the two Transition levels as well as after Character Level 6.

Does anybody else think that this game/other games have weird Difficulty 'curves'? List examples if you've got 'em.

The surface of Mars is dry and nearly barren. Looking up from the Hangar Grounds at Phobos Base, you can easily see where the Canals once lay.

You arrived on Phobos Base less than an hour ago, and you've been sizing up the situation from a safe location. One of UAC's experiments went, well, haywire, and unleashed some sort of hell upon Phobos Base.

Literally, hell. Some of your buddies from the Academy have been trying to shoot you dead ever since you got here. They appear to have become brainless, mindless, soulless sons of bitches. Nobody sane from inside Phobos Base is responding to your comm calls - all you've been getting is variations of "We're coming for you."

It looks like it will be all uphill from here.

Okay, why is it that when I play a completely defensive build - and it doesn't matter which game, whether DoomRL or Nethack or TO - I always do better than when I do offensive or explorative builds?

(For reference, as of late my characters have a hard time getting past DLev 5)

So, I was tinkering with the idea of Istraki Ghouls and Klorofolun within D&D 3rd edition, and then I got to thinking about how the creatures and outsiders of Doom would be represented within D&D 3rd.

So, before I go anywhere else:

ALL Marines, Former Whatevers, and Martian Outsiders get this feat for free (to duplicate how you and Cybie can duke it out until 1 HP each and still be fully functional). In addition, all Marines and former whatevers get Firearm Proficiency (Gun), Firearm Proficiency (Shrapnel) and Firearm Proficiency (Chain) for free, and Marines and Former Commandos get Firearm Proficiency (Plasma) and Firearm Proficiency (Launcher) for free as well.

Running Commentary written as playing:

Floor 2: Two Enemy Spawning levers... finally got to use my shotgun. Skipped Arena, plan on skipping Wall.

Floor 3: Two easy kills thanks to barrel in starting room... lost a medpack. I miss having a number pad, must re-assign diagonal movement keys after dying. Used first medpack after being ambushed by a shotgunner. Berserk pack saved my ass after Armor broke. I now have more than twice as many shells as 10mm.

Floor 4: "The Smell of a massacre... The air is really humid here..." If only there was an Arch-vile, then I could really take it to town here. Two imps in starting room. Finally found some damn boots. Will use pistols until Shottyman gained. Room with 4 levers, don't have intuition yet... shit. Lever 1 was a barrel trigger. Lever 2 was meditech. LEver 3 was summoner, didn't spawn in room. LEver 4 was spawner, spawned imp, 2 pistoliers in room...

Floor 5: Spawned in room with imp, armor shard, barrel. Fuck yeah Chaingun! Dumped pistol, still working for Shottyman... but I can take a break and work for Int 3 as well. Found a meditech lever in the nick of time, almost had to use a medpack. Speed Mod! Oh YEAH! Found Supercharge, didn't take it. Skipped Chained Court.

Floor 6: There is an armor shard here in starting room. There is also a lever here, but also a barrel, and it's a small room... and the lever was an exploder lever... glad I shot down a door! Computer map! two large, 1 small health packs (good luck getting to pick them up!), everything else is monsters. Took an envirosuit that had been carried, also blue armor. Dropped smallest stack of ammo (48 shells) for LHP. Found a lever that did nothing. Swapped SHP for LHP.

Floor 7: "The smell of a massacre..." Blood Lever in start room. Used SHP after a scuffle with 3 imps. Found an exploder, almost got fried. Used LHP after a Shotgunner/Chaingunner ambush... I really miss diagonal movement. Used shells as bait. Used SHP to get Phase Device.

Floor 8: Got better boots. COMBAT BOOPIN' SHOTTY! Now I can make some boopin' PROGRESS! Computer map shows nothing else of interest, will kill other enemies on floor now. I really miss having 'x' set to special reload ('R') now.

Floor 9: Almost got fried by a barrel. Good thing I still had that chaingun... Heh, lotsa barrels here in this city of rooms. There is a Hell Knight here somewhere, must be careful. SPEED MOD FUCK YEAH! Used a LHP to beat the swarm that the HK was in.

Floor 10: "The smell of a massacre... You feel there is something really valuable here!" Started in a room with 3 demons... armor almost dead, one LHP left... I really need Shottyman. HK killed armor, I killed it back. Used LHP. Used Damage mod on Chaingun.
Replacement armor was on acid, damnit. Avoided barrels, ambushed a Cacodemon. Found missile launcher, will probably never use it. Second HK damaged second blue armor, corpse now wears 34% blue armor (its, not mine.) Walked into a demon, two volleys from Chaingun ended the threat on this floor. Found a blood lever, saw first Energy Cells.

Floor 11: "There's the smell of blood in the air! You shiver from cold... You feel there is something really valuable here!" Intro room has lever, not pulling it. Used Phase Device to try and get to the valuable thing. Found Phaseshift Boots! Found an exploder lever. Need LHP. Killed by an imp that dealt 13 damage. Made it to Former Human Corporal.
