Off Topic / Fallout Online

I want to tell you about Fallout Online. I was a little sceptical as i heard about it because of many fan projects with such theme, that wasn't good, or wasn't Fallout, but this one is great. Our Russian guys were working on it for 5 years, they have written their own engine from the scrap (that looks like Fallout, feels like Fallout, so i won't be able to tell, where is Fallout, and where is FOnline) that is using .dat files from the original Fallout without any changes. Not so long ago that project entered a phase of third open beta test. Currently 2 servers are active. One is mostly Russian-speaking (but still there is a clan of Canadians that are performing military operations, that quite often means massacre of the city population, including low-level players and NPC), quite hardcore because of many factors. It takes place after the events of Fallout 2, and is using it's map, locations, and stuff. Lots of quests, but it's hard to perform them because of hi-levels that are killing everything on their sight (and most of quest wasn't translated yet to English). So work on this server is in progress. And second is for English-speaking people. It has absolutely different fighting system, a much deeper crafting, it is more user-friendly, gives an ability to create/join/manage clans, own a base, and much more. And there you can stand in a city for an hour without being afraid that somebody will kill you. But it has less quests. Also the levelcap there is 21-th levels - don't know, is it good or not. I advice you to try second server, if you'll start playing. Better join today because today was the full wipe of second server, so if you will start today - you will be on equal rights with others.)

Not the best game, not the luckiest, but it shows some features from new beta, and also has quite interesting ending.)

I hear that many people complain that AoB is hard and that none can win it. Here's a proof(for now it's only on NTR difficulty) that it's winable and that it's very easy and enjoyable challenge after you gain certain level.

Requests For Features / Some suggestion

To The Dragonslayer - it would be cool addition if it could crush walls by attacking them, it would increase the feeling of unstopable DooM.)


Imho there should be one special level that grants red armor as one of the rewards. Now the first level with guaranteed red armor is only The Mortuary(The Vaults generate rewards randomly). HoC seems to be good for it, replace one of the supercharges with red armor(for example, right one, anyway it's a waste now), and everything will be fine.


About The Vaults - there's a little error(at least it looks like error) in the map.

And, at last, about ranks. Perhaps skill ranks are all right, so we won't touch them. But requirements for experience ranks are just crazy.

I don't think that many people have played more than me. And even for me this requirements are crazy. They means that i need to play three times as much as i have already played since 0985. And i'm sure that i won't do that just to achieve that rank.) And mancubus rank too annoyed me a lot because mancubi have a little spawning rate, so getting only 15 mancubus kills in one UV run is too long for requirement of 500. And also i haven't even read Hell Knight's rank requirements, i achieved it right after achieving mancubus rank, so perhaps they should be swapped.

A little annoying game, i have found first red armor only on last level of Hell(that forced me to take TaN), and there was a lot maze levels, that annoyed me a lot, i wanted cave, arena, city - anything, just not that f*cking maze.)

Bug Reports / Random crash

I experienced a random crash without line numbers or anything, game just closed. Player.dat and score.dat was deleted. Luckly i backup them often.) I have a recording of the crashed game.

I'm slowly returning into DooM RL, so only NTR difficulty this time. This run was pretty easy, so i think HMP game will follow sortly. It was really fun to find 4 suits of red armor on level 8 and then not to find any red armor till last levels of hell.)) Only 2 uniques in this game, and both was useless for me(Phaseshift boots are nice but after Lava Pits there are no real need in boots). I made a really stupid move in The Mortuary, firing BFG right arter start, i destroyed all items that was in central building.)) But lots of cells for BFG and rockets saved me.

The only reason i'm uploading this record is because it was fun to play this game.) And i hope it will be fun to watch it.) You need DosRecorder to watch it.

Modding / Question about additional levels

Additional levels counts as mods? I prefer that levels and campaigns(just some levels packed in one file with information about their consecution) would use separate folders from "mods" and have different way to use them("Play custom level" and "Play custom campaing" in menu).

Requests For Features / Strafe

Talking of evasion, how about way similar to the way, how it was implemented in DrashRL? In it if you are in "Normal" tactic(not "Brave"), was attacked, have vacant place in any square near to you, and successfully have passed evasion roll, you fully avoid damage and move to that square. Maybe use it as strafe in DooMRL, trait, with which you have additional dodge chance(better than from hellrunner) only to ranged attacks, and only if you have vacant slot in direction that is perpendicularly to the direction, from where that shot came. If it was successed, you move to that vacant slot(random if there are two of them).

I think that most of you here have their own bindings and do not use the default ones. Because default bindings are terrible. I want to post my own bindings to hear you thoughts about them and if they will be accepted, then maybe make them official? Maybe they're not the best, but anyway better than default.) They are for standart 101/102 keys keyboard, not for laptops keyboard, for laptops you need to change ALL bindings anyway.

"You see*" and "There are no monsters in sight." are usefull when using "x".
"There are no items in sight." is usefull when using "X".
"Fire -- Choose target*" and "Find a more constructive*" are usefull to know, do you need to press fire once more, or not.))
"You feel there is*" and "*something really valuable*" serves to attract more attention to the fact that there is unique(are uniques ;) on the level.
"* uses *" - i think that you often miss moment when enemy uses medpack. But sometimes it's nice to know such things. So i colored it too.
