He's right about the experience ranks. They're just kind of silly at the moment. And boring, too - everyone's a cacodemon.

Assuming that such a terminal would be rare, and possibly have a chance of failure, and the stats wouldn't be affected too much (+1 bullet damage is fine, +10 is not. Same for -5% chance of Archvile generation versus -50%), this sounds like a great idea. It should offer a random selection of all the possible effects (like, ten out of the hundred possible ones), but it should word them in an ambiguous way. Similar to D&D players having to word 'wishes' from a genie very very carefully...

Perhaps the stronger marines would require you giving them a small/large medpack to recruit them.

Requests For Features / Re: Medals
« on: March 28, 2008, 08:58 »
I'm voting for medals. Very nice idea. Once I have found four uniques in one game. Its posible. Two of them was Butchers, one Rail Gun, one Gothic Boots.

Two of the same unique shouldn't be possible - makes the name a bit redundant, for one thing.

Pre-0.9.9 / Re: [H]|89%|17] My first "hurt me plenty" victory
« on: March 28, 2008, 08:51 »
I may be being dense here, but... if it's a victory, why have you put '17' at the end of your tags? That spot traditionally denotes what level you reached. Which in your case would be 25 (though the custom is, if you win, to put 'YAVP' or 'Win' instead of 25).

Discussion / Re: DoomRL trainer
« on: March 17, 2008, 17:18 »
Thanks a lot. Lack of cheats sincerely hurt this game. I will never understand not having the option to cheat in a game. So many games are so badly hurt because of this, its incredible how much things I'd do with cheats. Best games are those I can play around and do whatever I want the most.

Same thing than "you can't save in nightmare mode". Pointless, lack of options that hurt more than it helps. My opinions of course, but since both world can exist as much as anything else I don't get the problem.

I was so sure you were being sarcastic till I read that second paragraph.

I can't believe people really feel that way, to be honest. Like... Anyone here ever played Resident Evil 4? You know there's a 'one hit kill machine gun', the Chicago Typewriter, that you can unlock? I unlocked that, and my first thought after trying it out was 'What the hell was the point of that? Now I can run through the game and there'll be no challenge whatsoever, and every enemy will die from a spray of bullets in their general direction. Oh yay for me'.

Same applies to this. If you remove all the challenge from a game, what's the point of playing it? Admittedly, exceptions exist - who doesn't love turning on 'All Weapons' in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas every once in a while and seeing how many cops we can kill before we die, how big an explosion we can make, etc. But... DoomRL isn't one of those exceptions.

Requests For Features / Re: Things that should be in DoomRL
« on: March 17, 2008, 04:50 »
I recently played Ultimate Doom and Doom II: Hell on Earth, and I noticed that quite a few things that aren't in DoomRL that would be a great addition, as well as things that I thought would be cool to add to DoomRL.

Secret Doors
Some walls aren't exactly walls, but doors to closed off rooms. Getting into these rooms will be either helpful or harmful, much like certain levers.

Secret doors are generally stupid and pointless in roguelikes, the same would apply here.

Quote
Revenants
Apparently when a demon dies, they pick him up, dust him off, wire him some combat gear, and send him back into battle. No rest for the wicked, eh? You wish your missiles did what his can do.
Revenants are armored skeletons that can fire two missiles per attack, and can hold their own in melee. It took me about three direct missile hits to take out one of these creatures. Also, they can either fire unguided or homing missiles.

Hard to implement 'homing' missiles, considering all attacks are instantaneous. Not impossible though.

Quote
Spectres
Great. Just what you needed. An invisible (nearly) monster.
Spectres are practically the same as the Demons, except that they are partially invisible. Attacks against these bad boys, unless they are melee, have a 50% chance to miss.

Seems redundant. If you want to make your game harder, play on UV or Nightmare.

Spider Mastermind
You guess the Arachnotrons had to come from somewhere. Hi, mom. She doesn't have a plasma gun, so thank heaven for small favors. Instead, she has a super-chaingun. Crap.
Equipped with a Jackhammer speed Chaingun, the Spider Mastermind is one of the most powerful creatures in the Doom series. She can take up to 18-20 hits from the Rocket Launcher, and deals around 26-28 points of damage with her chaingun per hit to Doomguy. She also constantly shoots until Doomguy moves out of her view, and then he can move back in to score more missile hits.

Would be nice if we had another special level with the Spider Mastermind as a boss. Hell, maybe killing her would make it so all subsequent Arachnotrons are spawned at 'mortally wounded'. Tempting reward when you reach level 20 or so.

Baphomet, the Icon of Sin
Oremor Nhoj Em Llik Tsum Uoy Emag Eht Niw Ot!
You don't know what the hell it said, but you'd better kill it fast.
The Icon of Sin is a large wall consisting of a goathead with a hole in it's forehead where its 'brains' are located. It can spawn demon cubes which spawn about 1-2 demons (ranging from Imps to Arch-viles). The trick is to get on a platform and wait for the right time to launch a missile into its skull, rinse, wash, repeat. Hopefully you can kill him before enough Arch-viles spawn.

Tower of Babel
The tallest tower in Hell, and rejected by God, there has never been a soul that has been able to climb to the top.
The Tower of Babel would be a secret level (much like Hell's Arena, etc) which consists of 20 levels, with no health bonuses or health globes. You'll be fighting harder and harder creatures, and at the top would be something really tough, like four cyberdemons at once or something. Your reward would be just as great as your struggle to the top.

Nice concept, but you realise that this would be tougher than the actual game? Any reward would be pointless, because if you're tough enough to kill four cyberdemons at once, you're tough enough to kill the one cyberdemon at the end quite easily.

I'd suggest perhaps turning it into a branch, toward the end of the game, where you have to run through some kind of 'obstacle course' to get to your reward, but where you're under heavy fire. As in, far too many monsters to ever kill yourself, fire. It'd be a nice hectic challenge for those who're lucky enough to get an invulnerability near the entrance to it.

IDDQD
ID Delta Q Delta. Degreelessmode on, rock and roll!
You should add a cheat code (much like the wizard/exploration mode of NetHack) where you become invunerable at the cost of losing your highscore/unlocking new modes. Of course, there would be a prompt that asks if you really want to turn it on.

See secret doors. Wizard modes are stupid and pointless.

Angel of Limits
All that junk is just weighing you down. Holding only two of every item sounds better to you, but with limited supplies, you'll have to  choose your battles wisely...
Basically, you can only hold two weapons (including melee!), two stacks of any ammunition, two armors/boots, two items, and two mods. Not only that, monsters drop half as much equipment as normal.

A bit too 'specific', really. Doesn't seem to add anything that AoLT doesn't already give us.

The above is all just my opinion.

Requests For Features / Re: First person graphic mode
« on: March 17, 2008, 04:40 »
If you want to play DOOM with graphics then play DOOM, fool.

Beat me to it.

If you want a grid-based game with a first person perspective, textures, and good gameplay, play Might and Magic I-V/World of Xeen.

9
Special levels would be a good place for the suggested unique monsters (which in turn could have randomized 'good' drops).

So, I feel a little cheated. I walked into that doorway with full health and a reasonable amount of blue armour. There seems to have been no way I could realistically have expected to get attacked by 3 Arch Viles and a Commando in one move, and god knows what else was going to fire if I'd survived that. Meh.

I was trying to go for the Overlord rank, but I'm resigning myself to General now. It's really discouraging to die to bad luck as opposed to bad judgment.

Aside from that, it was a fun game. Got lucky finding my Advanced Chaingun on floor 11 or so. Obviously, I didn't use the minigun. Bad weapon.

This was tough - admittedly, I did it on my first attempt (of the night - I have tried it before, and failed), but it felt hairy. The trick is knowing when to fight and when to run, I think. I also had a little bit of luck with stair placement toward the end.

Only just managed to kill Cybie, as the 1 HP remaining shows. Four BFG shots took him to Almost Dead, and then I ran away (thank you, Hell Runner 3) and hid behind a pillar, waiting for him to appear so I could pop him with my plasma rifle (which only just killed him, it seems). I almost missed him - I'd suggest changing the colour to bright green, like the uniques. Too many things are dull red. Just a thought.

Didn't find any of the uniques particularly useful - Necroarmor, I only had for the Final Fight (admittedly, that must have saved me, considering my HP - though conversely, it could have drained more than the 12 it saved... Hmm... So okay, that was perhaps useful). The weapons were a bit poor, though. Maybe if I'd found them earlier... The earliest I've ever found a unique was the assault shotgun on level 4, but generally it's at least 12+ that I see them.

And now I'm a General, or so it told me. Must have unknowingly finished those requirements before the Colonel ones. Though I feel a bit guilty - my UV/Nightmare win was just a single Nightmare win on Angel of Pacifism - fairly easy.

Nice ideas, Dawgas. Original at least. But the first one I think would be (slightly) easier than you predict. The second... We can't have *that guy* as a regular monster, imagine packs of him. It makes my brain melt.
