Tile mode gets to the point of showing a loading window, but seems to hang at about 1/3rd loaded. Trying the 32-bit binaries for kicks gives the same set of errors as in this thread. I've checked my setup against this thread and all the libraries are installed.

The system is Devuan Ascii x64. Any ideas as to what's going wrong here? And did the source ever get released? Seems like it'd be worth just trying a fresh build since freenix binaries go stale so easily.

See, if there were a way to turn it off, I wouldn't have to change my habit (and you act as if that's easy - here's a hint, retraining muscle memory isn't easy.)

Is there a way to turn off this new equip-from-ground feature? It's really irritating.

Would someone explain the win criteria for Angel of Pacifism to me? This is twice now that I've gotten to the Cyberdemon, set the nuke next to him, and survived until it goes off, but I haven't got the badge for completing it...do I have to survive the nuke? Can he take more than one, and I should pick up some extras on the way?

I tell ya what, the trick to AoLT is pistols and Son Of A Gun. 100 rounds per inventory slot makes balancing your inventory much simpler. The Necroarmor helped out in the final battle, too; not having to switch armors every few hits makes things a fair bit easier. I found the Phaseshift Armor as well, but...eh, no thanks. Overall, not as hard as I thought it was going to be.

Yeah, I miss the old tactics settings too...

[ why do "barrels of acid" explode BTW? ]
'Cause they did in DOOM. It's probably the oldest FPS cliche - barrels explode when you shoot them. Sometimes it has to be certain kinds of barrels, but they're in basically everything post-DOOM.

I can't believe I finally beat AoMr. (I've only tried like a hundred times...) Most of what allowed me to survive was the fact that I found a vault with two red armors on level...3, I think, and a steady supply of red armors as the game progressed. Somebody up there liked me today. The loads and loads of large medkits didn't hurt either - the only thing I was running out of at any point was ammo! Also, I found an extended pistol later in the game to match my magazine-modded advanced pistol, which equals more shots per reload! My original plan was to nuke the Cyberdemon and run like hell, but I stupidly dropped the nuke instead of using it and he destroyed it with splash damage - I was entirely sure I was going to die, but I actually managed to beat him!

Dev-C++ is a very easy compiler to set up, that's what I like about it.

Off Topic / Re: Roguelike question
« on: January 11, 2008, 17:06 »
About 'converting' to another screen mode; it could be worth your while to write some display routines that handle different display sizes. Ages ago, I wrote a view object in Pascal which defined four panels (message bar at the top, status bar at the bottom, map view at the left, and info display at the right), each of which could be set to any width, height, and position.
Yeah, I suppose this is the best solution...I mainly just needed to know whether or not screen readers would support graphics modes (not surprising that they don't.) I think what I'll do is stick the game in console mode if extended color and the bitmap logo are off and leave it in graphics mode if they're on.

Off Topic / Roguelike question
« on: January 09, 2008, 21:27 »
So I'm trying my hand at writing a Roguelike. I'm using freeBASIC and the FBGFX library (imitates all the old QBASIC graphics functions.) Currently, I've got it running in 80x30 text mode - my question is this: should I take the time to convert it to 80x25 for potential console-mode compatibility, or should I just stick with 80x30? (I understand some DoomRL players are vision-impaired and use screen readers - how well do these work with graphically-represented text?)
