Angel of Max Carnage, Nightmare, won with Untouchable Cross. No Destroyer Diamond. I am highly annoyed.
Sigh. Anyway, this game is unworthy on a couple levels. I basically just ran through Deimos and Hell, and I got hit a few stupid times pre-Anomaly. By my count, I took 49 damage this game. Beating the Hell Arena on MC is a piece of cake, since your shotgun does highly predictable knockback which makes it easy to establish a graveyard square. I figured out how to pass the Entryway without damage about 25% of the time -- if I took a hit I just started over. My tactic was to wait to run until the last minute, then keep myself running with the initial medkits until I had a shotgun and control. I learned if you can just gun down sergeants due to their speed and their medkits, but you have to either use trees or fire into the fog to kill the former humans.
The chained court is easy if you don't do something stupid and eat 24 points of Baron-ball like I did. The Arena Master just gets bounced around by your shotgun. The Wall is an endless field of candy, plus it provides rockets to clear the Anomaly. Wearing Red Armor means you take 10 points of damage rocket jumping out of the ambush -- acceptable, since I had to use my phase to escape certain damage earlier. I had to run like hell several times from this point on as the game kept spawning me in mazes or in rooms absolutely filled with all sorts of guys. I burned phases, I ducked and ran, I got lucky more than once. I didn't have control once past the Anomaly, which is just kind of sad.
I built a ripper with the idea of going for Longinus Diamond, but Hell 1 was another pressure run-for-my-life level and I was forced to the other stairs. I could have opened the Vaults, but at that point I had 49 damage and was kind of disgusted at all the concessions I had been forced into making so I decided not to risk it. Ditto going after JC. Just not worth it.
And in the end I didn't even get my Destroyer Diamond. Looks like the game thought as little of this round as I did.

Okay, at this point things have gotten out of hand. Here's my morning game: Angel of Max Carnage, Nightmare, won with Untouchable Cross:
Notice I did not receive the Destroyer Diamond -- the one I was specifically going for. I am irate.
This marks the third time the badge system has screwed up for me. To review, look at this mortem from a few games past:
Missing here is Strongman Platinum, whose requirements are "Win standard game fist-only HMP," yet I recieved Strongman Diamond, whos requirements are "Win Standard game using fist-only HMP/100%."

Yes, the RNG can screw you. It happens.
In this case you actually don't want to kill the imps in the first room -- they will block each other's shots, splashing the entire group for free. Those shots that do slip out are highly inaccurate, and you are running right?
After, in the second room... do it again. Run straight through. Those Knights have a real accuracy problem and you will be moving very, very fast. Just make sure to try to keep a decent tangent line for them to miss. Attempt to find an empty room to secure and begin corner shooting, or just for distance. They'll stop chasing eventually. The one enemy you absolutely have to stop and shoot are sergents. Shotguns can rip you right the hell up as you try to blow past.
I'm not saying this situation is guaranteed-survivable, but a marine in your condition shouldn't be giving up quite yet.

Not much to say here... I just played as fast and dirty as I could, relying on the shotgun and intuition to get me to the chained court. There I grabbed all four 'zerk packs and the chainsaw and the combo lasted me all the way through to Deimos. I got very lucky at several key points: I got invuln globes just before the Anomaly and the Mastermind, and a lucky phase on Hell 6. I ducked into the Halls of Carnage by mistake which probably cost me a minute and a half. In all it was a fun 15 minutes, and its good to take a break from the other, more serious badges and just blow through everything.

For all you people saying that shift-R is useless, consider: the Invulnerability Globe grants 50 *actions* worth of invuln. You can either tap 'r' 5 times and spend 10% of your invulnerability time... or you can shift-R and reload the whole thing in 2%.

DoomRL is just where it needs to be in terms of death issues, with one exception. I would really appreciate a warning (like the Arena continue) for when you're about to step into harmful fluids when at very low health. This is a stupid, avoidable mistake which has claimed more characters than I can count and is never even slightly fun. Lava is just really hard to see sometimes, especially when its a single tile amidst a sea of blood. It makes me sad.
As for other games, Nethack is completely idiotic for how many ways its come up with to kill characters without any warning or feedback. The game is unreasonably frustrating and I have no idea how anyone plays it. Malice is not a design feature.
On the other end of the spectrum Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup is just about perfect. It allows you to die -- but those deaths are all of your own making. Are you too weak to fight that ogre? You die. Did you try to play cheap on the health potions? You die. Did you just try to walk into deep water without knowing how to swim? You... don't die. It won't let you. Did you wander close to said deep water while confused so you can't fully control your movement? You.. don't die. It asks you if you really want to do that. Answer: you don't.
This is how the games should be: they let you die through *expected* game mechanics, but don't blindside you with idiotic instakills and prompts you when you're about to do something spectacularly stupid, even if you don't know you're about to do it. You're playing the game, not the game engine.
As for the specific debate going on overhead: if you hold down the run key you deserve everything you get. Do not do it.

I didn't enter the lava pits because I tossed my envirosuit pack to make room for ammo at the beginning of Hell... I was carrying too many weapons and armors. This is why I don't like playing rapid fire guys, in general -- without ammochain, it puts tremendous pressure on your inventory. Anyway, I never found another and I wasn't fast enough to just run through the lava, so I skipped it.

I went through a bunch of builds trying to figure out what to go with. Obviously the Scout is a no-brainer in a time pressure situation, and maxing out Hellrunner is vital as movement is what eats up most of your five minutes. From there it was just a battle between me and finding the fastest, most powerful, most trait efficient build. Traits were scarce as I got sick of just randomly dying to the 100% requirement on small room and maze levels, so I resigned myself to early-ish Int2.
A Gun Kata build is maximally time-efficient, but it takes so long to kick in. I died around levels 6-8 a bunch of times trying to get the experience up. Likewise Shottyhead builds are too slow, and you don't have time to really play a berserker build as patiently as you should. So this game I did something I seldom do: I played a chaingunner. I don't know why, but I've really shied away from rapid-fire builds for the last... ever. It just underdamages both Berserk and Dualgunner, but its trait-efficient and provided crucial power in the early game. I ran some math and you just can't beat a chaingun for efficient enemy disposal pre-Anomaly.
So I figured out how to beat the Arena in 5 minutes, then figured out the conditions under which the Chained Court was doable (either a combat shotty or a shell box). I managed to not screw up long enough to get to the end, which is the story of just about every game. Next up is Destroyer, I think.

I've been trying for this badge way too long, and making things way harder than they needed to be. I had a bunch of runs where I exploited the wound-with-shotgun, kill-with-fist tactic to do fancy things like clear the Arena but every time I'd get to the end it would withhold Sunrise Iron Fist, and thus the Strongman Diamond. Once, I'm sure the lava wave killed a former while I was shotgunning the door in the Halls of Carnage -- that was rage inducing. For this run I decided to just screw it and dive for the end. And you know what? It was a lot easier.
The first and second levels make or break the game: if I got a berserk pack on each, the game was made. If I didn't, the game was lost. Level 4 was the tipping point: three ranks of Brute plus Berserker plus items spawning more frequently on lower levels just made the game a breeze from there on out. I swore to myself I was just diving for the end (mainly because I lost a good character to cockiness) but when I saw two invulnerability globes right by the Mortuary stairs I knew I had to go for it. Usually a fist-clear of the Mortuary takes a bunch of skulls + all my armor + most of my kits, but with such a long invuln I managed to tag all the Viles and one entire half before it ran out. Fun times.
Anyway: the bug! Look at the mortem... I get Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Diamond... but where is Platinum? The game states it is for winning a game on HMP using only fists, while the Diamond is for winning a game on HMP 100% using your fists. Obviously if I qualified for the Diamond I qualify for the Platinum... yet take a look. Its worthwhile to note that this is my second badge-related bug. I lost my Marksman Diamond somehow. Dunno what's going on. Anyone else getting this?

Requests For Features / Request: an armor use for the Firestorm mod

I slaughtered my way through Hell's Armory, downed the Shambler, and saw that the main reward was a Firestorm mod. This made me very sad as I was on a melee run. Could we please have an armor assembly which incorporates this mod? Or perhaps make it useful on armor all by itself? I'm thinking something like +10% all resistances. okaythanksbye

Meh, both Juggler and Reloader are at the weak end of the scale. Reloader is obsoleted by the tactical shotgun, while Juggler only comes into play when you lose control of a situation. It would be interesting to see a survey of mortems which have taken Reloader 3 to see how much the community likes the skill. I suspect the results will be far, far behind Hellrunner, Finesse, and Nails.

I don't really want to talk about this game. I'd much rather talk about the last one -- the one where I finally learned how to do the Arena without Hellrunner or Finesse, and how the game just snapped together after that. But no, I had to miss the Spider's Lair somehow and now I have to talk about this game. Sigh. This game can be summed up in a single line:
I found Malek's Armor on level 2.
It was a vault which also had red armor and a full health pack, but who cares, right? It had Malek's and after that the game was just simple. The armor is grossly overpowered -- good stat, good resist, FANTASTIC speed, *and* it regens. Its like an instant two ranks of Hellrunner, plus a bunch of extra inventory and entrenchment for every type of damage that counts. Why would you wear anything else? I used it to devastate the Arena, cleared out the Court, wiped the Wall and was into extended max before I hit the Anomaly. I went into my usual dualgunner build and the RNG decided to drop a Blaster on me. Well, hell. Looks like I've got a girlfriend.
I built a bunch of anti-melee armor but couldn't deal with the Angel of Death as I wasn't gifted with a Hatred Skull. I built a minefield of demon corpses and blew 'em up with a Fire Skull, but when the smoke cleared the big guy was 'barely scratched'. That was my cue to leave. The mortuary is just fun... I snagged the nuke BFG and walked through the level single-gunning it while BFG'ing every 10 seconds or so. It wasn't really fair. Carmack lasted through a clip and a half.
Oh, yeah, I suppose I should talk about the challenge now. Angel of Darkness isn't hard at all, especially on Nightmare. Double Experience is really too much... I had Int2 before I left the Entryway and Cateye in the Arena. After that, its just a normal game. I chose my dualgunner build as I already have two ranks of SoB and I'm not thrilled with any of the rapid-fire weapons. And then I got a blaster... soooo... yeah. Not much to say.
I see other people did runs which didn't involve powering to Int2 and Cateye. I don't know why they did this thing.

The most annoying part of the missile launcher is that it doesn't count as "a rocket launcher" so I can't quick-swap it out using the 7 key. With a full inventory this means I have to drop an item to wield it... which is just a ton more tedium than needs to exist, especially since I'm pulling out a rocket-thrower every two or three kills in order to gib corpses.
A little complaint, I know, but its still enough for me to leave the missile launcher at the Wall. The increased aggravation just isn't worth the improvement in a utility weapon.
