After a whole afternoon and night of frustrating Arena Diamond fails (like running out of berserk on round 2 after a RNG gave me berserk pack next to the stairs and I suck at timing so ofc I was like YEAH ANOTHER DEAD DOOM GUY how do you even do timing) I was like yeah let's get that last silver badge to get to major so I can be a major hell baron like donald trump. So of course I do AoLT because I forgot how ridiculous melee in a non-AoB game is and miss conq because I didn't have rockets or environmental suits due to being AoLT of course. I nuked the cathedral and vaults because there was a thermie available and it was better to just nuke it and lose all the stuff then waste my 2 medipacks (as it turns out I got like 20 large medipacks the levels after that anyway). Halls of Carnage is still a joke except on UV it's probably gonna be like 5 rows of lava per minute and i'm gonna DIE because i'm doing an ammochain run and don't have points in hellrunner and those things should still be SUPERCHARGES because I said so. Limbo was also a joke because i'm like BAM supercharge and then berserked through everything although I think it was because of Berserk. I dunno I should try it on a standard game but yeah it was like BAM and now suddenly conqurer doesn't seem so hard anymore. I still need like 9k kills for archvile so i think i'll be doing N! or UV spam or something and I need 2 more gold badges for lt colonel or something. It's still going to be easier then going for destroyer diamond i have NO IDEA what posessed me to do that.

aight now time to pass out and totally regret posting this shit in the morning but first it's time for something else to drink

Saved once because I thought my computer was going to restart, then saved again when it did restart. BOY FINISHING THAT LEVEL WITH A DOUBLE VILE PACK IN UNDER 15 MINUTES WAS HILARIOUS (For me anyway, i'm not good with speedrunning).

As soon as I got past the arena master this run was pretty clear sailing. Got past him once again due to stupid RNG luck (Something that i'm going to struggle with when I go to do N!, since I like to minimize luck as much as possible). Charging straight at him with all berserks absolutly ripped my blue armor from the arena, but luckily I had found another one.

Was surprised to see Hell Arena Key had it's own badge. Hell's Arena is wayyyyy easier then I remember it and I trolled around without even really trying. Would I want to try it on N! AoB though? No, probably not.

The Shambler in the Armory come *this* close to wiping me out, I left that level medipackless. I don't know how you're supposed to fight him normally, even with dodgemaster and +% firing speed he still seemed to not want to get into a pattern and let me shotty him to death.

Apart from that, I don't want to do N!. Going to try and tackle as much as I can without N! as possible.

Also got Hell Baron this run.

The saves were from when I had to leave my laptop unattended with people in the vicinity. And if I really wanted to savescum, then i'd have posted something even more awesome, right?

But yeah, the equipments and the notes should speak for themselves. Unfortunatly only found 1 nano pack - more luck then I usually have, but meh - or else I would have had the matching anti-grav boots.

The Technical on the armor is from a stupid mistake. Ignore it. Please ;_;

The Hyperblaster on its own can't be upgraded with one more mod due to Whiz 2. Don't know if that's a glitch or an intended feature...

Either way, the hyperblaster is hilariously powerful. Once I got the hang of it I took it over the normal plasma rifle burst cannon every single time. Finishing off viles before they can even move was amazing.

Then I found the Laser Rifle on about level ~50. Ohhh boy, if I thought the hyperblaster was overpowered, boy was I wrong.

With SoB 5 and just 2 bulk mod packs, no damage, I was pretty much killing everything less powerful then an arch-vile close to 100% of the time. Then I finally found my power mod on floor 88.

Sheesh. That was ridiculous. It was just point at thing and shoot and watch it die. Shamblers died in two hits. Everything else pretty much in one.

Found my first cyberdemon on floor 91 - and that was where I found a firestorm pack. For some reason, I tried it on my Burst Cannon Laser Rifle and it WORKED. Ohhhhhhhh baby.

If I didn't use the trigun to nuke levels every time I found an invunerability sphere, that would have probably been an Ao666 run. Especially if I got to take my last few perks in hellrunner and the anti-grav boots so I could move into sight before anything could react.

Just...damn.

Comments:

After a comment I heard earlier I decided to go for shottyman BEFORE going for gunrunner, and that worked amazingly. It meant that as soon as I unlocked Gunrunner (which was fairly soon since it was UV), I could use it to its full potential. Anything before that would just be cowardly sitting behind a corner popping caps. It worked very well because when i started getting Vs, I could just be like ops my finger slipped and pown everything with elephant gun.

I accidently went down the wrong set of stairs when the chained courts spawned. Oops. Good thing I did. Now that I know 100% kills, is skipping the CC really worth the price?

I pay it gladly.

Thankfully I got Hell's Armory instead of Deimos labs. That would have really made me a sad puppy. The shambler is still a bit of a strange enemy to me but I killed it fairly without incident.

The wall was a LOT easier then I remember, even without Gunrunner or a Missile launcher/BFG/Unique. I mean, most of you probably eat it for breakfast but i'm proud that I did that nasty thing on UV. Ate through about 2-3 large medpacks though.

Level 12 gave me the Abyssal Planes instead of City of Skulls. I was quite excited because City of Skulls is hilariously easy on a shotgun run.

Then I spawned in the middle of some Hell Knights. OH MY

Luckily I got Gunrunner that level? so I could do some running and gunning.

Eventually cleared it out. I don't know when these new levels were introduced, but the lack of information on the wiki is kinda sadface. Offtopic, but is there some kind of mod that would allow you to remove Fog of War so you could map the levels for wiki purposes? I don't know how they did the old ones. Agony elemental was, however, a total complete joke with Gunrunner.

I would have easily gotten the Tower of Babel without damage medal except the new aspect ratio of graphics mode made me go "durr, i have plenty of space, rocket launchr explosion not DAT big hurr". I rue that, but i'll do it again on an AoMr run or something.

I didn't find a technical mod pack so I just made my Red armor B from the anomaly into nanofibre. Good enough.

I skipped the vaults despite having a lot of Medipacks and the Hell Staff. I could have gone for the Scavenger Diamond but 1) Heavily luck based achievements really suck imo and 2) I didn't want to ruin my run by phasing into a pack of VR and spontaneously combusting. Sue me.

I found like a bajillion thermies this run. I happened to spawn next to an invulnerability globe in floor 20, and it said that I was being hunted or some crap. Things started appearing around me (Where is this stuff on the wiki?) and after 3 Vs buttrushed me I was like "no screw this" and just nuked it. Moving on.

Level 22 spawned Mt Erebus instead of the Lava pits and after that little stint with the Abyssal Planes I was quite hesitant to go down. However, 2 thermies staring at me in my inventory made me do it for the lava elemental. Turns out it's quite a bit easier then the lava pits because you can pick your battles on somewhat safe terrain.

The Lava Elemental confused me though. The first time I beat it i kinda kited it, but with 70 shotgun shells that's not really an option on UV. I tried to Gunrunner it but it kept exploding me - the missiles from it work similarly to Rev Missiles I presume? What's a good way to beat this guy?

Anyway, he used up a lot of my spare medipacks. Not that I cared because the last few levels were a joke, even when I got something that was like
VMVMVMRRVMRVRMM. Missile Launcher + gunrunner :|

Didn't find a double shotty this run until like floor 20 which made me sad. =[

When I got to Dis i was really conflicted. I remember doing a Full win back in 0.9.9 and not getting 100% kills - and that was the point of this run, to UV/100% with Gunrunner. Eventually I just decided to nuke the mastermind for the lulz, and did so. When I went down to the fortress I wasn't sure if nuking it while not invunerable counted as a full win - does it count as a normal, partial or full? - but it didn't matter because apparently killing JC now kills the monsters he spawns too (I'm okay with this).

So, in conclusion, i've stopped pulling my hair out now and i'm happy.

Even if it's a crappy achievement.

I'm still happy.

Oh my goodness. I was doing so well with that run. Got so lucky with medipacks. And then I spawned in the middle of a pack of barrels, former commandos, barons of hell, with NO cover because of the boxes. My only option was to try and take cover as I could and fire some off.

Then this baron comes out of nowhere and is like HI GAIZ and blows up all the barrels.

I put Stupid Death in the title because I used a medipack instead of using the Angel Arm. Oh well, full win some other time. I underestimated those revs. Boy, they hit hard.

At first I was going to go for a shotgun run just for lulz before bed, but ended up finding the Trigun. And the Combat pistol. On floor 1. With a nano pack on floor 3.

Didn't get any red armors at all spawn during that game until the mortuary, but that was okay. Ended up finding Malek's armor anyway. As well as a duelist's armor. As well as a ballistic vest.

Ended up going into the mortuary because I had exactly 1 stack of 10mm left and knew that i'd get a bunch more.

Mind you, I had like 15 large medipacks.

Went into the Lava pits for the elemental just because I could. Screw envirosuits, I just walked all over the place with large medipacks. Yarr!

But yeah. This run. Now, imagine if I'd gone scout to test out Gunrunner and gotten Gun Kata instead...

(I've still yet to get a standard victory. :L)

Hi guys!

Upon coming back to 0.9.9.7 and seeing the new huge amount of master traits, I thought it'd be time to give them a once-over and see what I thought of them.

Personally, I don't think these were as balanced as they were back in the day. Some are much better then others, whereas back in the day they were all pretty balanced and useful for the relevent build (Ammochain for chainguns, army of the dead for shotguns, fireangel for pacifist, blah blah blah.)

I don't know when this huge amount of masters was added and i've no intention to go looking through previous releases for patch notes, so if i'm talking known issues or old rubbish then please ignore me. =D

I'm going to be doing a (kind of decent, depending on how much time i have) run for each master trait, posting the mortem so everyone can see the stats, giving my opinion and asking for community feedback (On the trait, not on my runs. I am aware that i'm not the best DoomRL player, but i'd really like these threads to be about the traits, not my sucky gameplay >.<). At thelaptop's request, i'll be posting one thread per topic and waiting until one runs dry before posting another one, so i'd kindly ask that unless you have some pressing balance issue that's not a bug to wait for me to post one up :)

Now, that said, the trait that i'd like to put under the microscope today is Gunrunner.

Okay! Let's take a look at how that run went.

First of all, I borrowed the build from DemoMan's run. Check it out by clicking the link.

Now, as for the master trait itself, here's my opinion:

I chose to use shotguns for this run - The trait does not work with rapid-fire weapons and has limited potential with pistols due to the superior Gun Kata and the low damage you will do with pistols up until that point. That leaves you with a melee build - which will not work with the trait - and a "rocket" build, which is too unreliable to base a gameplay type around. Essentially, it's a shotgun only trait - which leaves me wondering why it's in the general section for scout and not the shotgun section.

The run went pretty well up until the point where I gained the master trait. At around level 6 or 7, where you can choose your master traits, you will start to encounter some of the harder enemies - Barons and Pain elementals on lower difficulties and the full arsenal of demons on the higher difficulties. At this stage, the benefits of the master trait should kick in to help give you a boost to keep up with these enemies - if you are forgoing a master trait, by this stage your build will have enough tailored traits to survive, perhaps intuition or hellrunner where a master trait would have blocked it - but in this case, I was left staggeringly behind by Gunrunner.

Gunrunner in my opinion can best be described as "The poor man's Gun Kata". Due to the dodgemaster requirement, it excels in taking out single boss enemies - You can easily get up in their face (or at a distance, if you prefer) and strafe around their hits while instantly shooting in return. However, it only applies while in the "Running" tactic, meaning that you can't exploit this regularly without massive RNG assistance due to medikits/globes, or a LOT of waiting - which is impractical, because you'll be using this in combat. In addition, you will be prone to running out of ammo during this stage, meaning you will have to run to cover to reload, or do so in the middle of combat. Both options are not favourable, with reloading in combat never being a good idea if you can avoid it and running to cover to reload wasting turns of your running tactic.

Extending the duration of the running tactic was not a noticeable advantage, since it was offset by continually having to find cover. In fact, I may have spent less time running in actual combat due to the trait and the lack of shottyman.

I can understand the benefit of shottyman to this trait though - essentially turning you into a mobile autoturret for the duration of your tactic. And I will see some people who have played further then me (I YASD'd on the Shamblers in Deimos Lab due to not understanding how they worked - Their attacks autoaim despite a miss animation, pierce like a railgun, and look like rockets but don't cause Fire damage? They also seem to teleport and flank you? But that's for another topic) claiming that the trait could be quite broken with shottyman, on a shotgun run. However, (and I don't know if the devs agree with me on this, this is just my opinion) a master trait should start to shine immediately. Not reaching it's full potential, of course, but you should be able to be like "Hey, I have a master trait now!".

With Gunrunner, it was more of a "Hey, I didn't really get any benefit from this trait..."

Compare almost every other master trait - the real benefits become available immediately. Cateye allows you to immediately start scouting or sniping, Ammochain immediately allows you to start pooping out plasma rifle shots like it's going out of fashion, Sharpshooter immediately allows you to be incredibly broken with the GCB start dealing your maximum damage.

Gunrunner allows you to get a few shots off, in a limited fashion. Remember that the trait is essentially limited to pistols and shotguns - one of which has a limited clip, and the other has only one shot (With the exception of the combat shotgun, but against bulky targets and groups of mobs, you're going to want to use that double shotty. Face it. You know you want to.)

In addition to that, you are basically allowed to do it only once per level without dependence on the RNG. Perhaps twice. Certainly not enough to help a playstyle, and in my opinion, certainly not good enough to be a master trait.

So, as for balancing, what would I recommend?

I would recommend that this be moved to the scout shotgun master trait, and the requirements being made Shottyman (1) and Dodgemaster (1). The blocked requirements should stay the same. To facilitate this, Fireangel would be moved to the Marine class General master trait, and Survivalist being moved to the scout general master trait (which makes sense, considering that a scout's job is to survive and report information). Why? Well, as it stands, with the limitation to the trait being only while running and having to take 3 extra perks on top of that to utilize the power of the trait properly, it seems to have one too many negatives. One of them needs to be a positive, and the more balanced option would be to make shottyman the requirement so that you can start going guns blazing straight away. As for moving it away from the general master traits? By very nature of it, you can't use Gunrunner with melee weapons, and the description prevents it from being used with rapid-fire weapons (not that I think this would be a good idea). This limits it to the pistol and shotgun - something that is not shared by any of the other master traits (Survivalist just gives you more HP and while it blocks berserker, it doesn't block brute, making even a melee survivalist possible, and Scavenger, while nerfing the other skillsets, doesn't make them unavailable - it also gives you the added benefit of those crazy-ass assemblies even easier, but that's for another thread). Ergo, for balancing purposes, it would be better to simply make it a shotgun master and move Fireangel (which I don't see as a shotgun mastery anyway. What's it for, blowing up barrels on yourself due to the spread? ?_?) to the general section so it can be used with AoPc. (The requirements i'll discuss in another thread.)

Overall, it was quite enjoyable and I look forward to the new unlockables and stuff!

If anyone could clear me up on a few things, such as the deimos levels, why the wall was removed, assemblies and how to beat the cyberdemon on only floor 15, it'd be greatly appreciated! (inb4 noob comments at the latter :B)

Wow, it's been such a long time.

I got bogged down in real life issues and disappeared off the face of the earth for quite some time.

However, recently i've had a little more spare time on my hands, and recently while cleaning out my laptop I found my old 9.9 beta release of DoomRL, which reminded me of you guys.

I don't know if i'll even be active at all, but I just thought that since Chaosforge is still alive and running, I thought i'd pop in and say hi to all my old friends here, if anyone remembers me.

Also a huge shout out to Kornel for his dedication and all the supporters. I still owe you one.

I see a few familiar faces still around the place.

I also see that the wiki is still up and running in good hands. Sorry for kinda disappearing on you guys like that =|

So, if anyone remembers me and my nooby days, feel free to say hi! Also, how much has changed since 9.9? Admittedly i'm a lazy bugger and couldn't find the changelog during the brief time I was on the wiki.

Is V still the face of death, or is there something even worse (Without spoiling those secrets).

Also, I notice that there's another artifact linked to the Dragonslayer, with the pickup condition being "Weild the Dragonslayer". Is that still one of the biggest secrets or did someone leak it while I was gone? =o

A plain weapon modded with an AdvTech Weapon pack does not become yellow.

Requests For Features / Aim on walls fix

This is particularly annoying on Maze levels, and even more annoying with a Rocket Launcher.

In some wall configurations, you can still aim and shoot at the enemy even though there's a wall in the path.

EG:

Could this be fixed in the next beta, or at least show where walls are in the aiming line? It would save me countless YASD's in Maze Levels because I can see and can't shoot an enemy and they can see and shoot me.
