Requests For Features / Re: Where's the rest of the music?
« on: May 20, 2012, 01:16 »
I'm aware of the Dark Side of Phobos, and while I do think the music is pretty great, it does not much make for a fast-paced game such as DoomRL - by which what I mean is that by the time some of them are even beginning to hit on the stride, I've already beaten the level and moved on to the next one.

The Map08 of TNT was what I was talking about: I think it's pretty close to call it a remix.

But thanks for your link, pacmanus. I'm looking through those and seeing if it'd go well, although at least some of the music has the same problem as the Dark Side, as mentioned above.

Without checking the music.lua file, I'm pretty sure that any music from Doom II or Final Doom is not being used by default. The current default is: Sonic Clang's remixes of all 9 Episode 1 tracks, plus custom tracks by fellow Chaosite Simon Volpert for the special levels.

I'm pretty certain that Hell's Armory track, and possibly the one from the Wall (Hell's Weapons and the Brick Song) are remixes of a Final Doom track.

Quote
Music and sound are particularly easy to mod. If you aren't happy with something, I'd invite you to change it! I've heavily customized my music and sound luas to significantly improve my experience.

First I'd need to find the music from somewhere, in nice clean mp3 forms, preferably in comparable remix quality.

Requests For Features / Where's the rest of the music?
« on: May 18, 2012, 15:25 »
It's mostly just the first episode's soundtrack in the game, along with an occasional track from Doom II or Final Doom thrown in. Where are the tracks from episodes 2 and 3? They used to be around, but are no longer there.

It's getting really tedious listening to the same stuff over and over again, particularly on Ao100. And I liked the original Tower of Babel music: made it real fun fighting the Cybie.

Edit: And while we're on the subject, why are the tracks for maps 4 and 7 switched by default? Easy enough to fix, of course, but it's odd.

Oh hey, I'll have to remember that for the future. Thanks for pointing it out.

 4 souls destroyed the Mastermind...
2 killed the bitch and survived.
2 showed that it can outsmart hell itself.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Basically firing everything with an assault shotgun on the rush to the Unholy Cathedral, picking up the Longinus Spear - and getting about three levels worth of berserking from beating up the Angel of Death with just a combat knife - then largely bashing my way through the rest of the game, switching to the shotgun on an occasion or two when things went a little sour otherwise. My only regret is that I couldn't find a nuke to beat the Final Evil.

Starting to think I should add the difficulty a tad: getting a little easy like this.

As observed here, different sorts of tiles, such as water and acid in this case, look really blocky when put together. Any chance smoothening it out a little? Maybe even make the border tiles do damage, albeit a bit less, than full acid does?

Requests For Features / Re: Building ammo packs
« on: May 13, 2012, 05:15 »
Take a level in Whizkid, two full ammo stacks, and a bulk mod pack. The last ones, I believe, don't grow enough on trees to make it genuinely overpowered.

« on: May 13, 2012, 03:39 »
If you can break them apart, you should also know how to build them to begin with, right? Take a bunch of ammo, then build them together into a pack that takes less space and is easier to use, that really shouldn't be too hard. Something a technician could know how to do, no?

Maybe add it as a secondary feature to Scavenger.

Requests For Features / Animation
« on: April 05, 2012, 02:56 »
So, now that we've got some graphics, I was just wondering, how huge of a step would be to add a bit of movement to things, instead of having them remain static all the time? Attack animations to creatures might not be possible, and slow the game far too much, but I fondly remember the glowing and blinking of many items on the ground in the original Doom, and particularly the way the Supercharge and others of its type used to shift and change within their orbs, making them look sort of mystical and a bit creepy.

Possible?

What if small health globes/packs would only add five, ten points at most, while only the large ones reset it entirely, and taking the stairs down won't add to it at all?

Bug Reports / Re: [0.9.9.6G Windows] Multiple AoD bugs
« on: April 04, 2012, 03:05 »
You know you can flee from the arena? There's nothing forcing you to finish every special level.

Of course, but it should be possible to win it, at least in theory.

Quote
Besides, I have finished AoD long time ago and I'm still struggling with just UV. AoD is nowhere near N! difficulty (that is, unless you are playing AoD on N!...

It's not. AoD, even with monsters respawning, is nowhere close to N! in terms of difficulty. Indeed, respawning in itself is not a problem: does it not merely add to the tension and atmosphere when monsters constantly emerge from the shadows, even when you felt briefly safe? If the respawn rate was slower, and didn't happen to any corpse you were looking at, and it was possible to clear Hell's Arena without employing advanced N! tactics, I'd have no problem with it.

Bug Reports / Re: [0.9.9.6G Windows] Multiple AoD bugs
« on: April 03, 2012, 15:04 »
You're joking, right? It's very possible to clean up Hell's Arena. There's even a badge to beat Hell's Arena on N!, and many people have obtained it. Use corpse stacking and caco projectiles to clear it.

I was talking about the AoD respawn, not the N! one. On AoD it's much faster, sometimes even instantaneous, and even if I ever briefly managed to kill them all, the game doesn't count it like that. I've finished Hell's Arena on N!, myself, and know that it can work just fine: it just doesn't on AoD.

Angel of Destiny:
"Oh, you think you're so tough, eh? You think you can defeat the hordes of hell because you stumble upon something powerful on the first level? Well, tough guy, let's see how well you manage when fate itself is against you!"

Basically, all special items and uniques become much more rare. Vaults are significantly less likely to contain anything significantly out of depth, usable items spawn far from the player and near any enemies that might want to use them, deadly levers are more common and meditech/armor depots less so, and, perhaps the most insidiously, the game recognizes the way the player develops his character and adjusts itself accordingly. Put all those points in SoaG and Dualgunner? Nice, now watch me NEVER give you a single more powerful pistol and instead hand over all these shotguns and chainguns!

Would've gotten 100% except I accidentally entered the Wall and, unsurprisingly, could do nothing about it.
