-- General ---------------------------------------------------

8 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 7 of those were killed.

 1 souls destroyed the Mastermind...
1 killed the bitch and survived.

--------------------------------------------------------------

For some bizarre reason, I decided that I should have to re-earn all my crap in the new version instead of porting over my stats, and I'm starting with my Marksman badges.

I decided to try out sharpshooter; this made the middle game much harder than I remember, but after I finally got it, I was ridiculously powerful. Maximized shots with that modded Combat Pistol was obscene. I could kill Arachnotrons in three shots, and because of all that SoG, I could shoot three times a second. Reloading was a bitch, but if the situation required more than 15 bullets than I should probably run away anyhow. That Combat Pistol had ridiculous power at the end

The Phobos Anomaly was a giant pile of dicks; lost souls and pistols don't mix at all. The Cyberdemon was bad too; apparently his visual range is farther than mine, I kept getting peppered by rockets from the dark.

Level 11 was a major snafu, with more lost souls. It was a maze and there was a Pain Elemental. It just kept spawning more and more lost souls. So many that they started spawning on the other sides of walls, from the lack of space. There had to be like twenty of the bastards; I tried running but seriously, who outruns a Lost Soul? I only managed to kill them all when I lured them through a narrow path and killed them one-by-one, far away from the elemental. I exited that level with 2% health and no medkits, it's a miracle I survived long enough to restock.

The Shambler seems a lot easier in this version. Instead of chasing his ass around while he shoots lasers and teleports across the level to heal, he always seemed to teleport nearby and actually fight. Makes the fight more fun.

The Mastermind was surprisingly easy. I ran in her face and shot it from point blank while she flailed at me ineffectually. Just one magazine and she fell over.

I had a chance for 100% kills, but I ducked into the Cathedral without thinking about it, when the normal exit turned out to be surrounded by lava. Not a happy moment when I realized what I'd done. I at least kept up the wholesale slaughter afterward, until level 20; I left the place when I realized it was eating my health.

Overall it was a pretty good run. Sharpshooter feels damn good when you get it, but it surviving long enough to get it is the trick.

I'm thinking re-earning my AoB badges next, using Malicious Blades. But losing Berserker, that's going to hurt like a bitch. I'm wondering if it's worth it.

Whizkid's wiki entry says "The second rank of Whizkid additionally allows any assemblies made afterwards to be modded once."

Except I can't mod my high power pistol, or my nanofiber cybernetic armor even with two ranks in whizkid. This is sort of aggravating.

So how does whizkid ACTUALLY work, since the wiki doesn't quite have the right info?

With Shottyman, a combat shotgun, and a box of shells, it looked like move-reloads still were pulling shells out of my inventory instead of my inventory instead of the box in my prepared slot. Is that supposed to happen?

Requests For Features / Re: Badge Overhaul Brainstorm
« on: March 14, 2012, 10:33 »
Here's a trick: Some of us, particularly casual players that don't spend their time hunting new badges, don't actually earn them quickly. In order to keep our progress when a new version comes out, we just move over our player.wad and hope the game doesn't break. This is the first version that I haven't ported my old stats over, and I'm already annoyed that I can't dick around with the Angel runs (Nothing gets your head around the new stuff faster than being thrown into the deep end of Ao100, says I).

Changing the entire system, and then adding unlockables that are dependent on being earning particular badges, forces people to start over AND punishes us for not being all about the badges. At least now the unlocks are Angel runs, which are challenges instead strictly being rewards. But adding special stuff that you can only get by being badge-hunter is kind of a snub at anyone that doesn't obsessively adhere to earning new conducts/badges/whatever.

Requests For Features / Re: Friendly fire, Doom->DoomRL
« on: November 06, 2011, 09:12 »
I do like the idea of bringing back enemy infighting. But the team thing sounds like there would be issues with enemies getting into firefights when you're not even anywhere near them, because a "teammate" across the level wandered into your crossfire. And your teams are set up to ignore some of the most common Doom firefights; Formers of all colors were EASY to rile up against each other, and Imps nailing a charging demon in the back and getting it's attention was pretty common.

I think it'd be easier to just deal with it as Doom did. If some asshole hits another beastie with crossfire, they note his identifier in whatever array holds the active enemies on the level. Until that guy's dead or the victimized monster get distracted by someone ELSE blasting them, the shooter gets all the attention. Monsters ignore attacks from their own species/subgroups; Imps like other imps, knights don't care about splash from barons, and so on. In Doom monsters without actual bullets couldn't hurt their own species anyway. And nobody ever attacks an Archvile.

I think Doom had something like a hate-counter to decide how long their target is unchangable so that the monsters don't get schizo about targets during a crossfire, but actual teams sounds like a good way to have half the level dead before you reach it. Funny, but not really good for gameplay.

Requests For Features / Re: Auto-Pickup
« on: November 05, 2011, 09:34 »
Picking things up requires game-time. And, quite often, you're going to be wading through piles of bodies and items during a firefight. Auto-pickup happening while you're dodging trouble sounds like a good way to get killed. That's not getting into the inventory management part of the game, which is pretty important.

Being able to toggle it on or off in-game would be a necessity, but I'm not sure how you'd set which items you want auto-pickup for while the game is actually running. Having to turn the game off and edit the configuration files between every game seems like a hacky solution, but I'm not sure how else to do it effectively.

Cerebus Righthead
"A deadman's handgun. Looks like part of a set."
Damage: 3d5 / 3-15
Damage Type: Bullet
Accuracy: +6
Base Fire Time: 1.0 second
Base Reload Time: 2.0 seconds
Clip Size: 15
Ammunition: 10mm ammo
Alternate Fire: Aimed shot
Alternate Reload: Dual reload

Cerebus Lefthead
"A deadman's handgun. Looks like part of a set."
Weapon Type: Handgun
Damage: 3d6 / 3-18
Damage Type: Bullet
Accuracy: +4
Base Fire Time: 1.0 second
Base Reload Time: 2.0 seconds
Clip Size: 15
Ammunition: 10mm ammo
Alternate Fire: Aimed shot
Alternate Reload: Dual reload

Notes: The Cerebus handguns are from Gungrave and would probably work best as part of a set, sort of like the Gothic Arms armor set. Maybe if you had them both, you'd get the equivalent of Bullet Dance 1 (Which sounds like it's from Gungrave too) or something similiar. They're still pretty good on their own, having damage and clip-size equal to the various pistol uniques, but without any of their really special bits. The Righthead has the Trigun's accuracy and the Jackal's base damage, the Lefthead has that flipped (Accuracy slightly down, damage slightly up), and both have almost the same clip size as the Grammaton Beratta. But they don't have the nuke, the explosive rounds, or the autofire modes of the other three uniques, unless you get the set.

They might be better off as exotics, but their power seems a bit high for that.

--------------------------------------------------------------

Introducing Barney McGunfire and his very own personal battleship submachinegun, beating AoMK for the first time, 100% kills for the first time, and a big rank bump.

The game was actually very smooth sailing. Early on I had a high-power pistol (The 4 round variant) that I used with a normal pistol, because I didn't find the right mods to build a speedloader. I swapped it out for the baretta later and bulk-modded my secondary pistol, which I kept in the primary slot because the baretta can't dual-reload. The real kicker was tripping over the Onyx Armor early, which replaced all my armor needs for the rest of the game. I used the only other power mod I found on it, turning it into an unbreakable Red Armor (A little slow, but fuck it, unbreakable red!) I found the Gothic Armor (Which I agility-modded for giggles) and the Necroarmor later, but never had any use for them.

I avoided any special level I couldn't clear out, so I skipped damn near everything but the arena and the armory. The armory was where I picked up that lovely Grammaton Cleric Baretta, and after that I really didn't need any of the rewards the other levels would have given. Between it and the Powermod Onyx Armor, I was able to deal with everything I tripped over.

The worst part was an arena area that spawned me within view of something like 3 mancubi, 2 archviles, and a former commando and a few former slobs. That... was hairy. I mostly cowered behind the pillars in the center and tried to kill the viles without the mancubi getting line of sight, and a well-placed lava barrel managed to help me out. I was very lucky there was a soul sphere nearby, or I'd have been fucked.

Though in the end all the badges and medals, plus the pile of mancubi I shot my way through, bumped my rank up pretty hard. And finally pulling off a Ass-Kicking Marine and Marksmanship really made my day.

Requests For Features / Less exotic/unique assemblies
« on: November 03, 2011, 13:57 »
Over a quarter of the assemblies require nano packs. Just under half require exotic/unique packs to use. I was under the impression that assemblies were, in part, a way to reduce reliance on unique drops to get yourself some nifty gear. Instead it's looking like a way to use nano packs to make godkiller equipment, instead of the ability to create not-quite-exotic gear out of mundane material.

Basic seems fine; it only has a couple of things in there that require exotic/unique mods to make. But more than half of the advanced ones require exotic drops. There are no advanced pistol assemblies that don't require an exotic, and the only advanced armor you can build without a unique mod is environmental boots. Chainguns and shotguns do get the Assault Rifle and Focused Double, which look pretty sweet (I haven't gotten the Focused Double, but the Assault Rifle served me well in the past), but other equipment types rely on exotics to get any better. Master is almost entirely nano-based. Except the new Cerebus gear, which I haven't tried yet (The 0 protection weirds me out, high resistances or not).

Considering that nano is already really powerful even without assemblies, can we get more that don't require it? Or the other rare mods, for that matter?

Bomblet Launcher
Fires a cluster bomb. After exploding, 6 bomblets fly off at random angles from 1-4 tiles, and then explode. Those create 6 subbomblets each, which also fly off at random angles 0-2 tiles. Those subbomblets generate 6 subsubbomblets, which also fly off at random angles, 0-1 tiles.

Barrel Launcher
A giant cannon that you reload by standing next to a barrel and loading it in. Only holds one barrel at a time. Kinda inaccurate since the ballistic properties of a barrel are fucking retarded.

85 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 75 of those were killed.
2 of those were killed by something unknown.
And 4 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

 4 souls destroyed the Cyberdemon...
4 killed the bastard and survived.

Since I finally noticed that 9.9.4 was released, I decided to give it a whirl. Scout AoB seemed like an interesting combo, to take advantage of their stairsense.

I started with brute (because I'm not fucking retarded) and rolled from there up to Berserker, to get myself established. Since Scouts know where the exits are, it actually seems better to not rely on dodging, but instead on being able to go berserk and carve a bloody swathe when you can't find an alternate route through. After that I dropped some levels in Intuition, which were disgustingly helpful. Even with Int2 being nerfed to only work slightly out of visual range, being able to figure out what kind of nonsense is waiting in the next room or around the corner is great for figuring out what paths to take. Honestly, at that point I was set. Information and cowardice is much better at getting through a level than the ability to carve into a pile and scream about blood, and later map types love to give lots of different routes between here and there. Early maps are harder, since they involve big rooms and very few alternate routes. And zombies with shotguns, as usual.

I did get into a few bad situations, like my dumbfuck idea of invading the City of Skulls. Blademaster wasn't useful because of how late I got it and the fact that I was mostly avoiding giant mobs, but in the City it would have practically carved a path through. Instead, I sat there cutting down skulls for nearly no XP and slowly running out of health and restoratives, while a bunch of elementals sat far back and shat out more skulls. Maybe if I'd played a Marine and took vampire as early as possible, it'd be useful to take on the city; skulls for health, and there's so damn many that you could build up enough Berserkerness to last through the end of the game. Instead, I had intuition and had to use a homing phase to escape the giant pile of bones when I'd run out of Large Medikits and realized I was fucked if I didn't leave.

But most of the time Intuition kept me safe in situations where I'd have been fucked. Like an arachnotron crossfire in a warehouse that I was able to turn around into a counter-ambush, since I could "sense" them around corners. That skill is powerful now that it's available early.

Also, while I skipped the Halls of Carnage, the RNG still insisted on giving me a BFG9k shortly after the cathedral. I didn't know those could randomly spawn outside of Ao100. I thanked the RNG for this unprecedented gift by hurling it into a nearby pool of lava, as I am wont to do.

Yeah, after level 29 up until he died, everything was sort of one big happy blur. A neverending, exploding blur.

Before him 52 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:

Some rumours though, say that the Cyberdemon was killed already!

3 killed the bastard and survived.

--------------------------------------------------------------

This is my first real attempt at Ao100, and I think I did pretty goddamn well. So well that I'd killed everything in my path, until an archvile and a mancubus shut me down with a combined volley.

I found a BFG 10K on level 29, and immediately turned it into a high-power assembly. I had Ammochain; this pretty much means nothing stood against me anymore. I had, by hook or crook, a perfect kill rate until I found it, and keeping that rolling after finding/modding that gun was trivial. My battle strategy was basically screaming "ALL THAT LIVES IS THE OPPRESSOR" while marching from one end of the level to the other, blowing the fuck out of everything at the edge of my visual range, be it monster, barrels, or walls.

In mazes and room catacombs I couldn't just let loose and level the entire floor with BFG fire, so I'd rely mostly on that overmodded Plasma Rifle to kill anything that got in visual range. And then I turned a corner and met those assholes, and my run ended. =<

Goddammit, from what was nearly the "instant win gun" to instant death. Fucking mancubi.
