How about this modification that I suggested in the gun kata thread -
Angel of Alzheimers (or Forgetfulness or something)
Start the game with 15 traits of your choosing - Every time you level up you pick a trait to lose a level in.

I think it would be hilarious, but I'm not sure how it would play out. You could just try to avoid monsters as much as you can, which would essentially make this challenge an easier version of Angel of Pacifism. Moreover, it would take forever to lose the 15th(the first to go in this challenge) level, meaning you could just dance through the earlier levels without worries even if they decided to go full out aggro, unless exp requirements are reversed to reflect normal gameplay. But then again, alzheimer's gets worse as time progresses, so why would you forget more in the beginning?

32
First they learned to run, then they learned to wield guns, and now they can always win in a quick draw.

Hmm. That needs to be a trait. "You always get the first shot out."

And you think it wouldn't be imbalanced if it was always the other way around?

Okay, but seriously, that's cheating. Something should be made about that. Like, if the Doomguy enters someone's field of vision on his turn, then they won't have the time to react on the exact same turn, when they take theirs, but rather must wait for the next round. Except for some higher level monsters: those are allowed to act first unless the Doomguy is fast enough, like with Hellrunner. Then, when everyone gets to see each other and fire, whoever is the fastest gets the shot out first: the player character's firing speed, and all the traits affecting on it, will be important.

In other words, bring in a new stat called Initiative.

See my previous point. I don't really see any point in complicating game mechanics any more, as raekuul already pointed out that

Doomguy's action is always the 'first' in a round.

Don't you think the monsters deserve a chance, too? I mean, it's an ambush, they're supposed to get the first shot. Don't you scout with the shotgun? Even around the corner, you can still, in most cases, fire a chainfire weapon into the shotgun's dead spot. Or you can blast through the wall with a barrel or a rocket if those are available. Not to be offensive or anything, but it just sounds to me that there's a problem with your tactics, not with game balance.

Formers with random weapons would be a logical conclusion of the thread.

Or maybe that (some?) formers could pick up and use weapons.

34
It's a feature of the current version, not a bug. No more easy exp for you, good sir!

Century Lounge / [H|Ao100|98%|YAVP] Mod madness!
« on: April 10, 2011, 02:39 »
No, seriously. Check out my super shotgun. Now if only that baby could bust through armor! It could knock a hellspawn back half a level, though, provided they survived the initial blast.

In case some people are wondering about my stats, this game was played when I was staying at my parents last week.

On a more serious note, though, there was no real challenge after I found the sniper modpack. I consider it potentially game-breaking, at least on lower difficulties. Maybe it's just my skill in general but I've so far only won those Ao100 runs when I found the sniper modpack early enough. Once you've got that+ammochain+ironman times three, you can enjoy being the unstoppable force of destruction that you are, but even that gets boring after a while. I myself didn't really get bored until level 65 or so, when I basically stopped finding interesting special items.

And is the fallout gold cross reserved only for standard games? I mean, I nuked seven levels, and still the game isn't satisfied. If this is the case, then why don't we make a special cross for Ao100, reserved for those who manage to nuke at least 10 levels...

Jim, the scythe only appears if you YAAM everything from start to Unholy Cathedral. Otherwise, it's the Spear as normal. It's not a "random" unique at all.

Oh, right, true. My bad. Then it's only the chainfire weapon of dreams(nightmares?) that eludes me.

Discussion / Re: Most common uniques
« on: April 06, 2011, 14:41 »
My most common non-guaranteed uniques: Hell staff (8), followed by Anti-Freak Jackal (6), Cybernetic armor (6) and Hellwave pack (6). The only uniques I have never, ever seen are BFG10k and the Scythe.

Most common non-guaranteed exotics: phaseshift boots (11), medical armor (10), shockwave pack (10), phaseshift armor (8) and finally a weapon, minigun (7).

On a funny note, medical armor is more useful than medical power armor, because it's moddable (you can get rid of the speed reduction and achieve a similar amount of armor), but even then it's a bloody waste of inventory space. Ok, it might be useful if you can afford a breather between getting nearly killed and taking the medpack you should have in your inventory. If you don't, you're still very likely to get insta-gibbed even  if you can get your health up to 20%.

Requests For Features / Re: Ammochain tweak
« on: April 06, 2011, 14:26 »
Here's my two cents:

In my mind, ammochain isn't necessary in the standard game. On the harder difficulties(UV/N!), you don't have to worry about ammo generation that much, and you don't have the luxury of going for a certain rigid build, you need to have room for improvisation in your trait selection, i.e. you have to be able to adapt to the situation. On the easier difficulties, you don't have to think so much and the game is more forgiving. Think about the prerequisites for ammochain. They're pretty brutal, considering that they're all more or less geared towards a chainfire build, with no defensive traits along the way, I might add, and the only chainfire weapon available in the early game, the chaingun, is next to USELESS, because you can't hit shit with it without an accuracy buff of some sort, so you have to survive with a shotgun for the early game, even if you don't have the most suitable traits for it, and only upon hitting level 7 or 8 if you picked juggler, do you get rewarded for your hardships. And even then, accuracy is a problem, unless you find enough spare agility modpacks, so I think the unlimited ammo vs. accuracy is well balanced, and the main source of imbalance is instead the effect that ammochain has on your inventory management. Having ammochain frees up so much more space for spare medkits, modpacks, envirosuits, additional weapons, armor, you name it.

The other source of imbalance could be the traits that ammochain blocks (or doesn't block). Ironman is very powerful, and so is hellrunner, but having ammochain require reloader, as suggested in this thread, would be even more brutal than the current requirements, because getting ammochain would render reloader pretty much redundant.

I think the only times it makes a whole lot of sense to go for an ammochain build is when you're playing AoMC or Ao100. Why? Because on AoMC you don't have to worry about accuracy and on Ao100 the enemies are so tough and numerous as you progress that you're going to have great difficulties without a steady ammo supply, and the only times I've actually won Ao100 were when I found a sniper modpack and combined it with ammochain. I'm not sure if it tells more of my skill or the sheer power of the combination.

Additionally I've considered ammochain merely a milestone in individual development. My own player evolution has gone from a very shotgun-heavy playstyle through ammochain to a more experimenting, flexible trait selection, with emphasis on the early eagle eye.

I applaud you pulling off a win by the skin of your teeth, but would direct your attention to the following:

Never forget what you're carrying! :)

I appreciate it, but I was actually aware of it, but decided against using it after my health was so rapidly declining after losing the armor. :) Still, I discovered only afterwards how close it had actually been. :D Talk about battle-rage.

Now do it again but finish him off with your last shotgun shell. :P

Usually when I find the Jackhammer, I fail to find any shells after level 10.

In my case there are plenty of shells to go round, but usually the RNG decides to be funny and I get killed the next level after finding the Jackhammer. Maybe it's bad luck or maybe I just get too cocky after finding it...

Since my first win was largely thanks to shotgun shenanigans with some rockets for flavor, I figured Angel of Shotgun was my best bet for my first Angel win. I never quite had the ammo problem I was expecting to have, but maybe that's just because I haven't done higher difficulties yet.

Sounds pretty similar to my own evolution as a player. :) Well done.

Moreover, Jackhammer for the win! I lack sufficient words to describe my love for that weapon... it takes everything to a whole new level!

AoMC is so good that I can't get enough, at least not until I see a Centurial Destroyer Badge.
