Gunrunner really makes this, but the main cause of death was actually just doing 2-3 full sweeps of a level without ever even getting close enough to hear the last enemy. Tactical boost really, really help gunrunner, though - the tactical shotgun was more because I T-modded my combat shotty before Gunrunner anyway, and if I'm going to have a p-modded combat shotgun, it might as well be a tactical shotgun. Gunrunner and Shottyman combined turn you into a god as you run around, nigh-impossible to hit and taking shots every move - it's a shame it arrives pretty late on HNTR.
Cybie was a little nasty due to no Shottyman, but not too difficult with Gunrunner allowing me to dodge and shoot, then reload as Cybie reloaded. Spidey nearly caused some issues, but I had plenty healing and rockets if necessary, so she died pretty quickly too. This was another "not that interesting" run - there's some challenge to it, but it's mostly just another gold badge to collect.
Now, I only need two more gold badges - but Inquisitor and Everyman are probably among the nastiest golds around, and I'm not entirely sure how I'll be going about those.

Yeah, not much to say about this one. The last silver badge I needed was Brick Silver, so I ran HNTR AoB while trying to hunt for phase devices as much as possible until The Wall. I was invulnerable and loaded with medpacks on entry, so although my first phase device took me across the Wall, I actually let the barons and knights burn a hole back through, just in case my two other phases somehow failed to get me back. (After all, it was a Brick Silver attempt, so I could happily walk out of The Wall and die instantly for all I cared.)
I survived, without much difficulty because I had a lot of medpacks and all I had to deal with were 6 knights and 6 barons, so with my objective complete I just carried on the run down to Spidey for the win. Not really notable in terms of being a massive challenge (took me 3 attempts), moreso because it completes my Silver badge collection (and hey, a win is a win and a badge is a badge... I really should get out of the habit of not posting mortems because they're "not important enough" to go on the forums). All I can really say that's valuable is that you can absolutely let the enemies burn a hole back through if you've got the medpacks or powerups for it, and MVm seems like the ideal build if you're going to have a master because MBm isn't going to help much against high-health Wall enemies (and the wall is likely to be the major challenge of a Brick Silver dedicated attempt).
And yes, the name of my marine references the nickname I've been calling this badge by privately for a while... Onto finishing my gold collection, then!
Next!

I've been trying for Eagerness Gold and Platinum for a while now, originally just for the gold but I felt the platinum honestly wasn't that much harder. What I've discovered with Cateye, though, is that it can be amazingly hard to actually get enough ammo to kill things with - I kept a shotgun on me for situations where it's most useful, but also because 10mm and power cells would rapidly deplete if I tried to kill too much with them. I went for int2 and then EE first because, well, without EE rapid fire weapons are essentially off the table, and int2 is just really, really good.
So how'd this go? Well, I skipped CC+. because it tends to kill me on AoI. I seem to recall having a combat shotgun before Military Base, though, which helped a lot - I did some standard assembling of tactical boots and gatling gun (for its plasma-adjacent damage output with 10mm) but a major difference in this run is I figured out how to kill shamblers on AoI. Some careful rocket launching allowed me to expose the double supercharges in Deimos Lab (I grabbed my assault shotgun from there first - the weapons I blew up were two pistols and a shotgun, all unloaded.) With everything dead, I grabbed one, ran to the final shambler lever, pulled it and ran - and when I saw a shambler I stood there and chainfired plasma into it, not caring much about taking damage as I had a lot of spare health, good armor and a supercharge to heal up afterwards. But when I saw the onyx pack in there, I knew this was going to be a good run - I grabbed a set of steel boots dropped from a crate, slapped the onyx pack on alongside a tech mod that dropped and got myself those tasty lava boots.
The Wall is pretty easy even on AoI, especially since I went in supercharged, but it does an excellent job of ruining a Cateye's ammo supply. Still, the backpack is worth it when "how much ammo can I carry" is the biggest concern I have. Why did I enter the City of Skulls? I probably shouldn't have, but pain elementals and lost souls really don't like assault shotguns - on floor 13 I entered with my health in the red, and slowly got less and less stressed as I collected medpacks and got up to 100% (and I'm pretty sure I did the level damageless anyway). A little later, as the mortem history shows, I found a nano pack and got one of my favourite assemblies in the game - powered red armor. 50% fire resist, 25% melee resist, plus 5 flat damage reduction with no movespeed penalty and self-repair? That's a yes from me, especially considering how many of the worst attacks you can get hit by are fire damage. I also assembled tactical armor on that floor - my pretty much exact reasoning was "Oh I've got two agility mod packs and nothing to do with them, I'll make tactical armor why not". I did then use it to get a bit of a speed boost through Halls of Carnage at the start.
I didn't manage a Cyberdemon's Head as I took some mild damage maneuvering around Cybie to avoid getting crushed against pillars, but he's pretty easy to melt with plasma. The start of Hell was mostly uneventful and consisted of the usual "zap things from range or around corners" cycle, but level 19 gave me an alarm event - which was amazing, as it was a hellish city, but other than going all the way to the outside and around the buildings, all the routes to me were blocked by lava, meaning everything helpfully clumped up there and politely stood still while I shot it from the edge of Cateye range. I don't remember a huge amount of the event in Hell as I already had most of what I needed - A-modded plasma, gatling gun, powered red, tac boots and lava boots to swap to. I skipped the Unholy Cathedral because an AoI Cateye build is in no position to punch the AoD to death, skipped the Vaults because I didn't have a way to clear the centre vault and didn't feel them worth visiting and I skipped the Mortuary because dear god no. Finally came the Lava Pits - a moment I'd been waiting for, the moment to earn Lava Silver...
Yeah, it wasn't that exciting. Turns out with Cateye, this challenge really shows why it's a silver badge. Lava boots meant I didn't need to rush through, unlike with Envirosuits, and since most enemies can't venture into lava, I just cateye-sniped everything from just out of range (I had Juggler by this point, so I could just whip out the assault shotgun and blow away lost souls - nothing else was a threat anyway.) I'd never really noticed before that the Lava Elemental's attack seems to have Revenant autotarget, as I dodged one and it exploded behind me - but when you're wearing powered red armor and lava boots, fire attacks that leave lava behind aren't something to worry about. He got the standard "Chainfire to death" treatment, and with that, my Lava Silver was secured. I also grabbed Nyarlaptotep's Boots and ditched my tac boots, since Nyarlaptotep's give a better speed boost anyway. Oh, and I grabbed Triggerhappy in the Lava Pits, because I figured I was close enough to the end to not run out of ammo.
With that out of the way, Level 23 had a nano pack I didn't need for anything and a tracking map which made it rather easy. I ridiculously overprepared for the Mastermind, gathering all the ammo I could and planning my entry to Dis to be on as many health globes as possible. I went in and... oh, right, yeah, Cateye. Unlike Cybie, Spidey can't touch you from beyond vision range, so I just stayed out of range and shot her with a plasma rifle repeatedly. I had to reload twice (as my neatly missing 80 cells suggest) and she died from the first volley after reload #2.
For my overall thoughts, AoI is just really mean in general, but at least it gives you plenty of inventory space to play with. I've been considering Inquisitor Platinum, but considering you need to be well stacked with medpacks there, I don't know if I'd be able to run Cateye sustainably. Plus, it would suffer from something I only really noticed the true strength of in this run - I generally leave powerups to the end of the level if possible, because pretty much the main cause of death is going down stairs into death, so having overheal and as many powerups as possible at level start is extremely strong in case you need to clean up a clump of terrible things immediately.

--------------------------------------------------------------
After quite a few attempts and many breaks in between to pursue other badges, I at last have obtained the Centurial Diamond... along with the silver, gold and platinum, of which the platinum earned me the rank of Marshal.
Early game is the hardest, as per usual - and I tend to try for at least a decent few kills before the hell knights show up, especially when there's humid air or a massacre lever around. Although I've seen Dodgemaster get taken before Blademaster, I took MBm first because of its incredible utility not just in shredding hordes, but in doing so in no time, essentially granting free experience and berserk time. (If I understand the mechanics correctly, 0-time kills with MBm also shouldn't count against berserk/invulnerability timers either.) I carried a shotgun for the early game, upgraded to a combat shotgun and eventually a tactical shotgun later as a backup weapon but I don't think I ever even needed to use the tac shotty at all. For the latter part of the early game, melee enemy caves were a blessing - melee enemies to practice on and berserk from, and often easily found powerups too! Invulnerability was a big part of this run, which made Int1 an incredible help - even with colour vision obliterated, there were plenty of times when I could see a ^ near me and move to investigate, leading to a few extra invulnerabilities, berserk packs, supercharges and similar.
Beyond that, I took a level in Finesse to further speed up my stabbings, then detoured to grab the extra brute and hellrunner levels that opened up. As it turns out, Brute 5 turns the Chainsword into an absolute death machine. When you can dodge right up to a crowd and cut the whole swarm apart in a hit or two each - with Blademaster cutting the time down significantly - not much is a threat, and anything that is will almost instantly berserk you and cease to be a threat. After those, I took the extra hellrunner to aid both the stairdiving and the ability to close in on enemies - less chances to knock me back and much more chance to dodge rapid fire attacks. Beyond that, I went towards Whizkid in case I got the chance to make anything incredible, or even a second chainsword to upgrade - but I never got much use out of the second level of it.
AP Onyx Armour was pretty good for a lot of the game - 4 protection, not a lot of movespeed penalty, pretty decent while berserked. Late game, though, I swapped out for an onyx-modded energy shielded vest for permanent resistance to fire/acid/plasma - pretty effective against almost everything that would be facing me before I got into melee range, at which point I'd be ripping things apart and getting Blademaster freebies anyway. I didn't quite get to make it cybernano, but I did get a power mod on it, giving it 3 protection on top of the resistances - which, incidentally, made me practically immune to those damage types while berserk. (Only 5% damage, minus 3? That's about 100 damage needed to go as high as 2!) I didn't really encounter much of note - there was a nightmare arachnotron cave I passed through, and I deliberatly went after the two cyberdemons I saw to up my kill count, but I didn't even notice a lot of the nasty stuff I chewed through. I noticed exactly one of the 16 bruiser brothers, and I had no idea I'd even met a nightmare arch-vile! Oh, and I carried the rocket launcher in case I needed it or could make it nanomachic, and I did encounter one good time to blow a wall open with it... on an invincible walls level. (Tall room on the left, stairs at the bottom, entrance at the top, viles and mancubi inside)
All in all, I'm... honestly still not very sure of what the strategy for N! Ao100 is - other than "grab invulnerability, run towards stairs, stab things in way until overpowered" - but that seems to work just fine. Maybe I'll get around to doing it again on ArchAo666 sometime... but for now, back to the diamond collection! I've managed to get a couple of N! AoMr characters into Deimos, so maybe...

Alright, so I was originally trying this as a Vampyre, but I switched to Blademaster and that made it immensely easier - stair sense as a scout, plus the ability to instantly berserk off of swarms and not get hit in retaliation. If you notice, I "left level 16 as soon as possible" - the Cyberdemon was only a few steps away, so I ended up chainsawing him before he even got to fire a shot. I wasn't aware that you could get credit for leaving a boss fight as soon as possible.
Honestly, very little happened in this run - I found 3 power mods that I slapped on random stuff, but I never got any other mod pack and ended up carrying the LS anyway. (One-shot arch-vile gibbing is fun!) It was basically running away, with the occasional session of "haha chainsaw go brrr" when safe, then the journey through hell consisted of essentially more of that but with "haha LS go brrr" instead... which as usual, is about how Dis went, too. In fact, my first attack is still in the message log. The power-modded shotgun did serve its role as a backup gun well, though, clearing a few nasty mobs out of the way - and after a lot of Nightmare, having things just lie around doing nothing once they die was highly refreshing.
Now, another platinum-only run, or back to Centurial Diamond... Hmmm...

So this "Next!" took a while, huh? I've been trying a lot of things in my diamond quest - trying to get a Vampyre through the Anomaly, trying to get enough luck for a Centurial Diamond run to do something other than stairdive with a combat knife and pray to never meet an enemy... but reading Icy's thread, as well as inspiring me, tempted me to the dark side - Angel of Overconfidence is a pathway to many badges some consider to be... unnatural. So I decided to try a Sereg Destroyer Diamond run - it starts you with a great rapid-fire weapon and pretty close to game-winning status already. Plus, when you need to keep the damage under 50, health isn't an issue...
This was pretty much the least eventful run imaginable - I met an arch-vile close up on level 1, shortly before grabbing 2 invulnerability globes. I gained several levels by enemy collateral damage while running, and I didn't really do much besides running and grabbing another invuln- my invulnerability started on level 1, ran through a couple of specials and an arachnotron cave and ended after a few volleys into Spidey, at which point I used the ancient art of "stay out of range like a coward and snipe with int2 until target dies" to finish the job. As you'll see in the message log, though, I did grab a tech mod that I didn't remember or bother to apply until close to the end.
I'll probably return someday and try a non-Sereg version of this, as it really feels like the least deserved diamond badge since the days when I earned Gatekeeper Diamond by melting through the walls with plasma - although considering I only played part of level 1 and part of Dis while vulnerable and still took 40 damage, and have never even obtained the untouchable badge, let alone cross, that might be a little ambitious. I guess next up are some platinums to get me to Marshal, and then begins the quest for diamonds, which will require some serious work on my skills in various areas such as stabbing things without getting stabbed, Phobos Anomaly nightmare tactics and a broad variety of general Nightmare skills. (Either that or going hardcore on Sereging...)

I've been actively trying to do Nightmare as a Vampyre on my quest for diamonds, and if I can breach my major obstacles might well end up scoring a couple in one run, with luck - but constant Nightmare got a little dull, so I decided to step back and try for the Hunter gold & silver badges, which I never got because I don't particularly like Angel of Darkness.
It managed to be quite interesting, actually; I went Cateye and found a laser rifle, which seemed excellent, but still wound up ignoring it in favour of my plasma rifle. Meanwhile, the full win was entirely luck - thermonuclear bomb and level 23 invulnerability, as well as finding an energy shield on, I believe, level 23 as well. Walked up to JC, shot plasma at him until he died. It does mean that I now have a full win on HMP, which makes my stats screen look a lot nicer.
I wondered whether to post this amidst the diamonds I've posted lately, but hey, the Post Mortem section was pretty much designed to be spammed with mortems, right?

There's actually surprisingly little to say about UAC Diamond. Ironically enough, I took my time quite a bit on level 2, because I encountered a pretty great combination - "the air is really humid here", a computer map and exactly one lever, allowing me to safely flood the map with water and clear it out for experience and items. Other than that, it was a straight shotgun-fuelled sprint to the Chained Court, where I grabbed the chainsaw and berserk packs and shotgunned my way past the formers. (Berserk or not, charging sergeants and captains is not fun.) From there, a slightly less rushed sprint through the Anomaly and Deimos, taking opportunities to kill enemies safely in order to level up enough for the Cyberdemon (who ended a previous attempt - no medpacks, no berserk on entry, not enough experience). Unholy Cathedral was about as easy as one would expect for a blademaster - lost souls leave no corpses, demons file neatly into a doorway to die and the Angel can't stand up to sustained berserk chainsaw. Then a charge from there to Dis, with the LS in hand, sprint
UAC Diamond feels like a relatively minor upgrade to simply winning on Nightmare normally. Assuming at least a few levels give you generous stair placement, it's really not as high-pressure as it looks - one minute is a long time, and it's certainly a lot easier than the old version. (I don't think I could've earned it back when it was a 15-minute limit, and stair sense didn't exist!)
I seriously doubt I'll be keeping up the rate of 1 diamond per day for long, but for now, I guess I'll follow the philosophy of my character, as he stated in the very last message of the entire run...

--------------------------------------------------------------
Relatively fresh from my Shottyman Angelic run, I looked across my badge collection for some easier ones, setting my eyes on the Strongman series - I never used to be any good with melee, but I've practiced a fair bit and even the mighty Strongman Diamond only requires HMP. Ironically, I was initially looking at Strongman Gold as an option for taking on a lower-level badge - but I figured, I've never managed a Sunrise Iron Fist before, so I wanted to go for Strongman Platinum to kill two birds with one stone, and if I'm going to be going fists-only, I might as well go for the YAAM too, right?
There's really not that much to say that others haven't already said, to be honest. Shotgun shells get you through the early levels by letting you chip away at demons before going for the punches; once you have Brute 3, your fists are actually pretty deadly weapons (10-12 damage, guaranteeing instant kills against lost souls and naked formers, and a +6 accuracy bonus) and once berserker gets involved, enemies effectively have a time limit to kill you before you start dealing out 20 damage a turn. Badass is actually pretty amazing with berserker, because the slow decay of overheal doesn't look quite so tiny when the forces of Hell can barely touch you. And of course, Vampyre at worst severely mitigates the damage that anything can do through berserk, and at best lets you come out at a profit.
I found an awful lot of exotic protection lying around - the full gothic set, phaseshift boots, two blood skulls and a hatred skull (I eventually burned one of the blood skulls just to open up some inventory space in exchange for a bit of a health boost). Why did I enter Phobos Lab? Because I'm silly and also thought it was the much more giftdroppable Military Base. As it turned out, though, Phobos Lab's enemies are actually quite punchable once you ambush the sergeants and berserk charge the demons. Unholy Cathedral was a much more thought-out choice, though - I had Gothic Armor by that point, which rendered the enemies pretty pathetic. I made a point of picking up Azrael's Scythe and discarding it, to add to my "found" stats and also because insulting the Angel of Death is fun.
As you may have guessed from the fact that I managed to get the Cyberdemon's Head and Sunrise Iron Fist in the same mortem, there was invulnerability by the entrance to the Tower of Babel. I'd prepared rockets for the Cyberdemon, but with invulnerability available I just charged at him. The Mastermind was a bit tougher, but well, I had power-modded gothic armor. With that and berserk, it was pretty one-sided.
The real final boss of this run, though, was the hell knight on level 23 with the shielded armor. If my calculations are correct, factoring in the 95% melee resistance, the 2 protection of the armor and the 1 innate armor of the hell knight, I would've needed 100 damage just to deal 2 damage to him in melee. Fortunately, I also had 95% melee resistance with gothic armor and berserk, and considering TaN2 and the power-modded 8 protection of the gothic armor, I believe it would take around 240 damage to deal 2 damage to me in melee. Incidentally, the Mastermind was smart enough to not attempt to melee me all the time - but with Brute 3 and berserk, even fists will make her flinch on 2/3 hits.
Although this definitely felt like a relatively easy diamond badge once it got going, I'd say my inventory contains enough backups (8 large medpacks and 2 nukes, mainly) to call this a decisive victory, and certainly a run worthy of being the one that promotes me to General.

Well, that was an interesting run. It pretty much started as a semi-stairdive - stopping when I got a chance for some safe kills, for level-ups and killcount. I took an odd trait build, I'll happily admit that - Juggler was my way of getting an emergency shell, in case everything went really, really wrong. The lack of Dodgemaster was a high risk until I got it, but finesse allowed me to empty my assault shotgun into whatever stood in my way with less risk of getting shredded in response, and the "backup shell" came into play a couple of times. Level 3 was one of those levels that resembles Limbo, with a few buildings conneted by bridges and surrounded by lava, with 1-tile walkways around the buildings. That allowed me to clear the level fully by standing in doorways and at corners, cornershooting things until they were on the brink of death and then letting them get close so I could knock them into the lava with the final shot. This became more of a grind than a fight, and soon enough the level was clear of enemies.... except one sergeant who had received my blessing to live. As you can probably tell from my kill stats, I killed that sergeant quite a few times. To add to my good fortune, a different sergeant had dropped me some red armor, and there was a megasphere on the level, so I left in good health and with a 200% red armor on me.
Level 4 and 5 were... uneventful, aside from finding a nuke. One of them was a standard maze of rooms, where I pushed my way to the stairs with sheer brutality (and spread a small group of former across the wall) and the other started me in a large room on the right-hand side of the level, with the stairs. I did peek out and try to get a few kills on that level, but with my killcount as padded as it was, I decided to quickly retreat from the mancubi and arch-viles outside the door.
Level 6 was yet another of the buildings-in-lava levels. Unfortunately, I started in close quarters to an arch-vile, who ended up doing some serious damage to the cover (and me) as I ran. I headed to the right-hand side where the stairs were and grabbed a computer map to see just what the situation was, and found that there were only two buildings in the middle and right - the left was just small islands and bridges in the lava, with some unknown exotic item. I wanted to see what the exotic was, but between my arch-vile surprise and my ill-advised attempts to kill it, the cover on that side of the map was severely damaged, I was running out of medpacks and the centre of the map was dangerously overrun. I checked my killcount, and found that I could still afford to miss quite a number of enemies, so I abandoned the level.
On level 7, I started in a large room with crates. To my left were the stairs, and to my right was an unholy army of arch-viles and barons. There were 2-3 viles in view, RNG only knows how many barons and that's only what I could see. I checked my player info for my kills/total - I had enough for Shottyman Diamond. I activated running mode, I did not pass go and I did not collect any items or fire any weapons in that level.
I decided to fight the Mastermind with the aid of my medpacks, and she was "heavily wounded", but I was fighting a losing battle. I dropped the nuke (by the way, I can't believe I only recently noticed in the source "are you sure you want activate the thermonuclear bomb") and charged the mastermind, who gunned me down almost immediately. The nuke went off, the mastermind exploded, and I sat back and admired my hard-earned
FATAL EXCEPTION
An unhandled exception occurred...
I've played and seen many games in my time, but no horror game in all of history has matched up to the sheer scare factor of earning a combined platinum/diamond/angelic badge, then being jumped by a fatal exception. I loaded up DoomRL and tried to continue my autosaved game - it was corrupted. (When I think about it, why does the game automatically destroy evidence of bugs without asking you?) I checked my badges and saw, much to my relief, that I had all the badges I was owed - and when I looked in the folder, my mortem was intact. However, I got a standard win - I read up on bugs and saw that, indeed, it's because you can't get a partial or full win if you aren't on at least level 24. Upon checking the released source, I think the fatal error was actually caused by the game trying to display the plot text at the end, because I didn't technically qualify for any of it due to not being on level 24+ nor having any True Evil kills.
All in all, it was a run that relied fairly heavily on the kindness of the RNG and on spammy tactics of farming sergeants. But hey - that's Angelic badges in a nutshell, isn't it? It certainly does seem like the easiest Angelic badge out there, but "easiest" is relative. Now, to consider what badge to go for next. Centurial Diamond is tempting, but I might try and relax with some enemies who'll stay dead for a change... (I did get to level 40 one time!)
Special thanks to all those who came before me, blazing a trail that I tend to follow in many of my attempts at the higher levels of badge. Tormuse and Sereg come to mind, even though I don't tend to use Sereging itself, but I do read mortems a lot for tactical advice - and I've had characters called "Tormusical" and "The Tormuse Maneuver" before, who sadly died in their attempts to copy Tormuse's mortems.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Hoo boy, this got interesting fast. As you'd expect, I ran most of this game chainsawing anything I could get a safe kill on whilst living globe-to-globe; most special levels I entered, save for CC and Halls of Carnage, were simply on the basis of OH GOD THEY'RE KILLING ME FIND STAIRS. Of all runs for me to win, however, this one really messed with me.
First, I had no get-out for the anomaly. No phase, no zerk, nothing. Of course, I did nothing but run, but I entered Deimos still zerkless. Deimos wasn't very kind in terms of finding medpacks, either; I had only one large medpack to fight Cybie with! But it's all good after Babel, because Hell 1 leads to the Unholy Cathedral, which I should be able to get the LS from easily. As long as Hell 1 isn't, like, an Arachno-Cacodemon cave or something...
Of course, Hell 1 was an arachno-caco cave. Every medpack lying around, with my lasting zerk, was just enough to drag me to the UC stairs with 36% health and no medpacks left. So no LS for me!
This, in any normal circumstance, would have been an utter disaster. The Mastermind can happily melt a chainsaw user in seconds. Of course, as luck would have it, my panicked stair-dives led me straight to a thermonuclear bomb. I tried fighting the Mastermind with my BFG and chainsaw, but with the Mastermind "scratched" and my HP at 18%, I decided I should probably take plan B. A wise choice, as I died literally the second the nuke was armed.
Oh, and the nuclear blast hurt so badly that in the afterlife I went berserk.

Ammochain AoMC was chosen mainly because it's fun, and partly because the indestructible death machine style fits with teleporting directly into a vault full of enemies. I searched every level, and found exactly three phase deviced before the Vaults; the first teleported me 2 spaces, (from start to above the stairs) the second placed me in the rightmost vault and the third dropped me into the middle. There were, hilariously, absolutely no uniques or exotics anywhere in the vaults; there was, however, a platinum badge, a diamond badge and a promotion to Major General.
Meanwhile, Mt. Erebus contained THREE plasma shields in addition to the necroarmor. And I already had one from a Former Commando. (he still died in about a second) If it amuses anyone, I dodged JC's first rocket, then literally just stood there chainfiring; he died before he ever got to fire another shot or summon anything.

Really, this was never built to last beyond the Arena. I just wanted my platinum. Which, as it turns out, is a lot easier than I expected.
My strategy for Arena Platinum, if anyone wants to know, was to find a fairly central pillar to take as my "pillar of death" and start corpsestacking around it. Not everything will approach the right way, of course, but every corpse crushed is an enemy permanently erased, and dropping a demon on a cacodemon corpse leaves you with just a demon. My biggest issue, actually, is that Arena enemies are reluctant to actually fight, and unlike most enemies prefer to hide at the edges of the map, requiring me to leave my corpse pile to radar shoot them, then realise that they don't care even at that point.
Of course, one important part of Nightmare corpse disposal is knowing when to stack, and when to just kill them and handle it later. Corpses you kill without stacking can be stacked the next time they respawn; your face, however, does not respawn. Demons especially are easily baited on their next respawn, erasing annoying Cacodemons. Wave 3 is probably the easiest, because you'll hopefully only have 1 or 2 corpses left, so I personally just radar shot the barons to my corpse pile and then chaingunned them both to death before anything could respawn.
I've been playing a lot more Nightmare recently, while not entirely failing. Actually, I should really have posted that game where I reached Hell 3 and got Gatekeeper Platinum, (and also made my previously Sereg'd Longinus Platinum legitimate) but I'll probably just post a better one when I manage a win. Now if only I could get myself a Diamond for my promotion... (Easiest I can see would be taking a Nightmare win to a full win, or going for vaults-by-luck on UV)

Discussion / How do I run open-source DRL?

More specifically, what do you actually do with FPC Valkyrie? All I know is I need to have it. I have no idea what that means, and I really don't have time to copy & paste it into every single directory on my entire hard drive individually until it stops telling me it couldn't find vpkg, since information on how to install it or any library has not yet been made available on the internet (yes, of all the thing that aren't anywhere on the internet, how to do this is one of them)
So if anyone actually knows how to do it, help would be appreciated.

2549 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
2344 of those were killed.
13 of those were killed by something unknown.
65 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 92 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.
35 souls destroyed the Mastermind...
6 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
21 killed the bitch and survived.
8 showed that it can outsmart Hell itself.

So yeah. I decided to try Melee AoLT with a shotgun start. Actually, I kept my tactical shotgun (and, after Deimos Lab, assault shotgun) until getting the LS in hell, but only as a final backup - only 1 stack of shells was kept (though, once Vampyre showed up, in Military Base I believe, I really didn't need the medpacks much anymore - with one exception.) Phobos Anomaly went down easily to a combination of shotgun fire and chainsaw blades, Deimos Lab gave me a piercing chainsaw which carried me through Deimon and of course, UC was no problem. I think I took WK just because I figured I'd want to use plenty mods, though it was rendered a little useless eventually by powered red armour and the LS.
What was that about guts? This time I thought I was smart doing the Mortuary, with only the LS and that loaded BFG without cells to reload... that's where my powered red armour went. And at least one other set I grabbed in panic. 2 of the viles spawned right by me at the start, but I still got horribly wounded in the process - Especially when I pulled out my fully-loaded BFG. Why you ask? Well, I blew away a good few enemies, grabbed some cells from dead arachnotrons and blew away some more, then went back to slaughtering them in melee - WITHOUT SWAPPING BACK TO THE LS.
Somehow, I got away with punching several arch-viles and their surrounding monster clouds and didn't lose my life.... though my HP was in yellow when I finished off the last of the revived enemies, and I'd burned 4 of the supercharges. The LS/AA combo, however, made me deadly - though some revenants soon trashed the AA.... regardless, on Hell 7 I ditched my 2nd assault shotgun (mortuary's one), grabbed some emergency BFG cells and proceeded to stab the mastermind to death.
The 2 kills I missed were a lost soul in HoC (Sadly, if the lave sweeps, waiting on the stairs does not work - they won't approach you) and an arachnotron in a cave in Hell (I couldn't even see the area it was in - I'd have had to wade through like, 10+ tiles of lava river that ran between solid rock to reach it). Regardless, I got my Lightfoot Gold, and survived the HMP mortuary even when accidentally using my fists for a while. The melee build really helped free up inventory space, even with an emergency BFG prepared (its capacity is so great, you don't even need cells in your inventory!) and the fact that you can gradually switch from shotguns to chainsaw makes a truly deadly run.
