Eww, it smells like feminazism in here.

Are you fucking kidding.

If there's some way to put up a silent hotfix for the current version then that could be good just as a personal statement against him. It's probably not worth too much effort beyond that because the current version of DoomRL is already out there and will get maybe 1000 more downloads in its lifetime. But don't endorse him any more, yep, got it.

Discussion / Re: Melee builds in UV tips.
« on: September 02, 2014, 23:56 »
I may have been playing melee wrong. I usually don't melee dudes until I get the chainsaw.

In a hybrid game that's correct - the combat knife is far worse than a basic shotgun even if you have levels in Brute. The point of playing a hybrid game is that melee is very powerful in the late game and can be better for clearing out later special levels and boss fights than chainfiring weapons or shotguns. In that case you can leave Brute until about level 4 or 5 so that you definitely have Berserker by the unholy cathedral.

However, if you're playing Angel of Berserk and are forced to use only melee weapons then you need to get brute first or you'll never kill anything.

Discussion / Re: Main obstacles on Nightmare! difficulty

Probably.  :P  I know I had a game where I had Sharpshooter in Phobos Lab, but it was a while ago, so details are hazy in my memory.  I may have been going for Conqueror in that game.

Even on UV you can generally get a master trait during Phobos Lab if you're conquering.

1. How do you wipe out the Phobos Lab? Nightmare demons are pain in the ass.

Fighting them in narrow corridors is simply a suicide. Shotguns doesn't work well as their armor is 3.
Luring the nightmare demons in the upper corridors to the central nukage pool is the best way but this is kinda luck-based.

In left-side nukage pool, I think 2 env suits are insufficient to lure entire of them to kill them in the pool of acid. Any advice?

On Nightmare? Is "Don't go in that level" an option?

Luring them in to the acid is basically the only way I ever deal with them unless I'm berserking my way through with a chainsaw. If you can't lure them without taking damage, it's because of one of two reasons:

1. Your movespeed should be extremely good if you want to play Nightmare and especially if you want to beat this level. Be a scout or get hellrunner but both would be great.
2. You don't need to beat this special level nearly as much as you think you do.

After that, I have no experience with the left side of the map on Nightmare - I always avoid phobos lab and military base.

Quote
2. How do you pass the Anomaly? I think the best strategy is:

1) prepare 2~3 phase devices and pray for god
2) prepare rocket launcher, and crush the right door before ambush opens. If ambush opens, immediately use the rocket-jump to right to escape

But 1) is luck-based and 2) needs rocket launcher, that is, you must clear the Arena (this itself is hard and Chained Court goes crazy).
Is there any other nice strategies?

The only guaranteed strategy I've ever come up with for this is as such:

0) Be a scout
1) Go in to Chained Court (not the hard version, of course)
2) Clear out one side as well as you can without dying or using any heals (otherwise you'll die trying to run past several chaingunners - even while berserk)
3) Go back in to the middle, grab all 5 berserks
4) Run from the chained court to anomaly, don't stop for anything other than health packs and enemies in your way.
5) You will still be berserk for about 50 more turns. Grab the large health packs, put on the red armor, run through the ambush and take little damage.

In the SGDQ spirit, I've done a speedrun of DoomRL. Generally speedrunners like games that take about an hour or two to beat - all the most popular ones are like that. The only thing even remotely that long in DoomRL is conquering or playing Nightmare!, and I'm way better at one than the other.

So I invented a speedrun category - HMP 100%. Not 100% kills, but rather experience 100% of the game, which means getting the conqueror badge. I'd love to try this on UV some time, except no I actually wouldn't because all the special levels are twenty times harder.

My early splits (speedrunner talk for time taken to reach certain milestones of the game) are really bad in this run, I spent a lot of time before arena looking for shotgun shells - you can't do it with just 30. My chained court was also very slow, it's a difficult level to do fast. Everything after that went okay. For comparison, my "Arena Complete" split was about 4:00 (my best is 2:59) and "Court Complete" was about 8:30 (best is 6:05 assuming an excellent arena)

I accidentally got ironman early, making the cyberdemon fight annoying (that is, because you go berserk if you take 33% or more of your max HP in damage, and his melee attack is too weak for my max HP if I get ironman). Luckily I could still get berserk off of arch-viles or limbo would've been impossible.

This run was pretty lucky (it's attempt number 52 according to my time-keeping program, WSplit) - I didn't die in the court which is basically as lucky as it gets, but I also got a whole bunch of medpacks for later levels - I didn't even have to explore the randomly generated levels for them all that much.

21
Aside from getting a bit unlucky, there are a few things I saw:

1. You didn't really have a plan for this. You should've been in running mode to begin with and/or had your rocket launcher out ready for a jump.
2. You hammered the left button a few times in a row. With enemies so close on your tail, you should've stopped to think about left vs. downleft vs. upleft as options.
3. Using a medpack didn't work out, as you saw. Your armor had been shredded and medpacks turn off running mode, so your melee protection after that move was 0. Running mode is so important that your chances would've honestly been better if you just went for the door and hoped for lucky dodges.
4. I wonder if running to the right would've been better? You could've closed the door behind you, healed up and corner-shot everything from that side. It would've at least meant that your first two moves didn't include brushing by a couple of lost souls.

Changing your intuition colour only works in console mode as of right now, you get purple-ish crosses in tiles mode regardless of that setting.

config.lua is reloaded every time you open DoomRL, it doesn't remember what the file was like when you started any given game of DoomRL.

It wasn't my run, but that's beside the point. But that would mean that if I reset my stats and play my very first run with a 100+ kill streak, I'd get all 3 UAC stars (and only on the very first run)?

Yes. Doesn't have to be the very first though, just so long as you've never managed to get 25+ kills without taking damage in any of your recorded runs.

Discussion / Re: Consecutive Achievements
« on: December 03, 2013, 04:32 »
The way it's supposed to work is:
If it's a badge, the game will only keep track of the first time you earn it, obviously.

If it's a medal, the game will always keep track of the first time you earn it, and then also every subsequent time you earn them UNLESS you also got a medal that is strictly better (such as getting a compet-n platinum making you ineligible for a compet-n gold)

I just did a 7 minute run of ITYTD and confirmed this. This must've been your first speedrun, like the speedrun bronze medal suggests.

Do you also earn badges/medals that require you to complete something at a certain difficulty level if you meet the same requirements at a higher difficulty level?

Yes. Well, for everything that I can think of.

Discussion / Re: Nightmare Anomaly
« on: November 11, 2013, 14:04 »
The way I pass anomaly in all of my Nightmare! games is generally:
Be a scout (also have hellrunner and/or berserker if possible)
In chained court, clear one half as safely as possible then grab all 5 packs and run for it
Leave levels 6 and 7 ASAP
Be berserk while running through the ambush, run past bruisers, get out
(Optional: If you have berserker, attempt to kill everything instead)

There's plenty of time to kill stuff later, and once you have Berserker you're already basically 100% ready for the final boss.

I was wondering what other diamonds I could get with my melee scout strategy and I realised that Lightfoot Diamond - N! AoLT without any melee kills - would suit it perfectly! While blademaster is obviously of no use to me, because I'll never actually get the killing blow on anything with a melee weapon, the first 5 traits (well, the first two and the fifth one) are still extremely handy.

Berserker gets me through levels by making me almost invincible on demand, all endgame enemies and napalm barrels will trigger it. It also allows me to deal decent damage with the chainsaw - enough to bring barons to very low HP in one berserked attack - and was my main damage dealer in boss fights befrore executing them with a BFG shot.

I mistakenly went in to the halls of carnage, but I had a homing phase device so everything was fine. My original plan was to kill the bosses by getting them to almost dead with the chainsaw then repeatedly shotgunning them but the mastermind almost killed me. I was very grateful for my mistake when I only needed one final shot from the BFG that I got through happenstance.

29
I take it that you used console?
Nah, tiles. They both have advantages for speedrunning, but I've been playing tiles for so long that I can tell everything apart at a quick glance now. Very handy when I spend half the time berserk and use envirosuits/invulns whenever I see them.

Quote
Also this is a great idea. I know what i'm doing for a Diamond now.

Actually you probably won't have enough health packs if you do AoOC, but if you can do UV 100% with three dead-weight traits (you need berserker for UC obviously) then you should be able to get to the vaults with Azrael's Scythe and a bunch of medpacks.

Quote
How did you beat Cybie anyway? Berserk pack next to stairs or activating it by taking a rocket to the face without armor?

Berserker also triggers whenever he hits you in melee, so there's no way you'll ever not be berserk for that fight.

1208 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 1036 of those were killed.
12 of those were killed by something unknown.
59 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 38 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

 64 souls destroyed the Mastermind...
7 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
51 killed the bitch and survived.
6 showed that it can outsmart Hell itself.

Most of the time when I get diamonds I have to either do something sneaky (Bring Azrael's Scythe to the vaults on UV AoOC to get Scavenger Diamond) or attempt it a billion times, but this one wasn't too bad actually.

My first decent attempt at Speedrunner Diamond was a shottyhead run that died on the cyberdemon because the weapons you can scrounge up in less than 20 minutes tend to suck. I figured I'd need to use shotguns as an early game crutch for a melee victory instead, which worked on the first try. I found a lot of phase devices but only the homing ones ever dumped me anywhere useful, so I still had to fight my way through a lot of Nightmare!.

As an aside, I thought the only way to get through Phobos Anomaly on Nightmare! was with a lucky phase device, but if you stair-sense your way from Chained Court to Phobos Anomaly as a scout, you get there while still berserk rather consistantly, which makes it super easy. I'm still not entirely sure how you'd get through as a Marine or Technician without a fair bit of luck.
