Maybe, but you can control how many rockets you're carrying a lot easier than you can control the game spawning a stack of phase devices. And a sufficient number of rockets takes up less inventory with the backpack (more than half the rockets I used spawn for free on that level, 2 full stacks plus a rocket box is enough). You can't expect a napalm launcher on any given run, but you can expect to get one eventually and modify the plan for that run accordingly.
edit: Aaaaand I just completed an actual Conqueror run on UV for the platinum badge. It doesn't even feel like enough of an accomplishment to make a thread, I just did the same thing again except with Malicious Blades, Lava Boots and Antigrav Boots. It just takes a long time.

How's this for a better solution to Opportunism in the late game: Just directly add level/2 extra captains and commandos to every non-special floor. 10 guns good for two clips each should be enough to clear one endgame level. Then add to the description "Fortunately, extra soldiers show up on each level ready to give you their guns."
In the early game, reliance on pistols and on shotguns that you have to throw away after four shots seems in line with the goal of this challenge. Other than pink demons and hell knights, a player conserving ammo can pretty much get a 1-1 ratio of shotgun blasts to kills on the early floors. Pistols CAN kill weak enemies without the specialized skills, they're just an that you try to avoid on most runs. As long as you're guaranteed to find a chaingun before you find a hell knight, you shouldn't be in the position of literally not having enough shots to kill it, though you may be forced to take some damage if you run outta shotguns. So it's definitely possible on HMP, but maybe luck-based on UV.

Yeah, I went a little overboard on the sloth challenge. The initial idea was just to just ruin the player's walk/run speed, because there's a god in Dungeon Crawl who does that and it makes for interesting gameplay. But then I thought that given the nature of this game, "stand still and shoot things" would be a bit too easy. Maybe the first version of the idea was better.
As for the accuracy buff, that wasn't so much an actual bonus as me realizing "missing a shot with the RPG would be certain death, better make that unlikely".
So revised version of the challenge: Movement speed is x3, all other actions normal speed. Probably reduce the difficulty to "hard". No point in an archangel version that raises movement speed any further, but maybe archangel would be "movement x3, everything else x1.2".
---
As for Opportunism, I'm not convinced that it would be impossible. My vision is that the player is carrying around spare guns instead of spare ammo clips (a plasma rifle in particular has almost as much ammo as a clip without the backpack). Realistically each chainfire gun is good for 2 clips and other guns for 3 before you need to throw it away.
However, I do concede that it would be A: Luck based and B: Harder on the higher difficulty for the wrong reasons, since they affect enemy spawns. Nightmare, ironically, would let you farm any captain/commando you find and thus cheat the system. Maybe if you tweak the item spawns so that all ammo piles are replaced with an equivalent common gun (but enemy drops are unaffected, so arachnotrons and revenants are still not helpful and you'll still see more bullets than guns).
edit: It just occurred to me though that Conqueror as one of the higher tier badges would be impossible since melee is blocked. So scratch that bit.

I'm amused that I'm really the first person to think of this strategy. Because the second I saw a challenge that said "by luck", my first two thoughts were "What are the odds of success?" (quite poor) and "Are there any items that could raise the odds of success?" (yes, two such weapons). I just assumed people were going to say this was the standard way of getting it.
Similarly, I already did Conqueror on HMP a few months ago, using Malicious Blades because it seemed like the "obvious" choice (most of the advantages of a melee build, but you still get a boost when shooting things in the Mortuary, and a hatred skull can take care of the Angel of Death). You can expect a post incoming within the next couple days when I redo that on UV.
edit: Also, it just occurred to me that my solution gets all the loot while the "standard" solution does not. Which I find quite amusing.

I covered every tile outside the center vault with lava, then used a phase device. This forced the phase device to put me in the center vault (the only other valid tile was the exit stairs). Cerebus boots definitely help with this strategy but I guess they're not strictly necessary.
Funny story: The acid spitter, aka the other gun which could have been useful for this strategy, was sitting pretty inside the center vault. It disassembled into a nano mod so I'm not complaining.

I know the game's not in active development, but I still think crafting theoretical additions to the game is fun. So here's two challenge modes I came up with:
Angel of Opportunism
"They say if you seek, nature shall provide. And what you seek is more guns! Every time you reload a weapon it becomes weaker. Oh, and don't bother with melee, infinite-ammo guns or the ammochain skill, unless you LIKE dealing 1 damage."
Reloading a shotgun, pistol or miscellaneous weapon would lower damage or sides by 1, whichever's higher (like an inverse power mod). Reloading any RPG or burst weapon does this twice (so rocket launcher becomes 5d5, then 4d4). Reloading a BFG does it 3 times since the numbers start so high. This continues until they become 1d1.
To avoid cheating: Weapons with regenerating ammo do this whenever the regen starts. Ammochain causes affected weapons to weaken once every time you shoot, as do infinite-ammo guns. Melee attacks all do 1 damage no matter what.
The idea is that you have to constantly replace your guns with new ones, mostly those dropped by enemies. It would still be an "easy" angel though. The higher tier badges could include 100% kills, conqueror, and combining it with angel of light travel. For balance purposes it should probably guarantee Mortuary and Halls of Carnage, since they include lots of human enemies while their counterparts have none.
Angel of Sloth
"For those who love to play cautiously. All player actions take 2.5 times as long. To compensate, you get +4 accuracy."
Archangel of Sloth
"2.5 times as slow isn't enough for you? How about four times as slow? Here's a protip: Don't miss."
"Very hard" and "blade" level challenges, or maybe even another tier up from that. Any mistake will be punished severely, dodging is useless, and you won't be able to reload fast enough to shotgun cornershoot. I'm not sure how you would even beat this except maybe racing for the Shottyhead trait. So obviously the highest tier badge will ask you to do it without finesse and/or as a Marine (also giving up the technician's quick item use).

Post Mortem / [U|AoC|100%|YAAM] All it takes is one lucky floor
« on: March 10, 2019, 10:33 »
Another platinum down. Confidence/Overconfidence is extremely luck based, so I'm surprised it only took me two tries to get a ridiculously lucky first floor (and second floor).
First floor included a Gothic Armor, a vault with the Hell Staff and some mod packs, and most importantly a berserk skull. That skull was the only reason I was able to kill two shamblers in Deimos Lab, especially since my only weapons were a normal shotgun and the laser rifle. The reward was TWO nano packs and all the remaining materials to create both a nanoskin gothic armor and an antigrav boots. Once I hit whizkid 2 and crafted those, the only thing left that could kill me was stupidity.

Post Mortem / [U|100%|YAFW] Scavenger Diamond
« on: March 09, 2019, 16:08 »
I set out trying to get a conqueror win, but I forgot about the cathedral so I threw away my chainsaw. Sad. On the plus side, by the time I realized that I found the napalm launcher, so I decided to dedicate this run to the Scavenger Diamond badge instead.
Strategy was simple: I stocked up on rockets and painted every single tile of the Vaults with lava. I only actually found one non-homing phase device, but it didn't matter because I had a near-100% chance of success (the only non-lava tile outside the center vault was the stairs). It took something around 90 rockets to do so (fortunately the level spawns 48 plus whatever the revenants drop). I popped an envirosuit pack right after the teleport for safety (thank you technician bonus), and only lost ~30% health to the ambush inside. I kept the arena master's staff until then just in case though.
After that, I found a nano mod and tackled limbo just for the guaranteed asssault shotgun+power pack to finish a nano shotgun (finishing another platinum badge--only assembly left is the stupid BFG). In the end, I did every level except the cathedral.
The combination of cerebus boots, napalm launcher and a double-sniper chaingun (with intuition) is loads of fun. All three of those items were surprisingly useful even on their own, I was especially imrpessed by the boots (I probably wouldn't have risked my run on Limbo without them).

« on: March 08, 2019, 21:57 »
Like I said, I barely even used the focused double shotgun--jackhammer (or super shotgun if you find it instead) renders that gun mostly obsolete. The only reason it saw use at all was because of juggler.
And I wouldn't go so far as to try an "easy" angelic badge, considering I haven't been able to reach level 8 on nightmare since this first run. I must've gotten real lucky.

Discussion / Are there any angelic badges that haven't been won yet?
« on: March 02, 2019, 19:03 »
I'm definitely not on the level of pursuing angelic badges yet, but I am curious about them. Are there any badges that nobody has claimed yet? And for that matter, what's the most that any one person has?
(The only one that stands out to me as being likely to be unclaimed is the speedrun badge, but I say that not having tried any).

I didn't have 100% before then, no. I never intended to go for 100%, but even if I did level 24 completely kicked my butt and I had to flee with a homing phase device (I know the exact level number because it was a "you're being targeted" level--I ended up with three archviles and a bunch of other strong enemies surrounding me because every time I tried to fall back to a better position I ran into more enemies). I also skipped a few out-of-the-way enemies in some other levels.

Finished this run a few days ago, might as well make a forum thread now.
I fully admit that I used the wiki to tell me the assembly for nanomanufacture ammo, along with a bunch of other info. Without two infinite-ammo guns this run would have been a lot harder.
Most notable bit of good RNG was getting the Enviroboots on level 20. Total fluid immunity takes a lot of the sting out of Ao100, though I kept my modded plasteel boots for speed. None of the other uniques I found were even worth carrying. The most amusing RNG was when I found the Nuclear BFG on two levels in a row, long after it would be useful.
I was really frustrated when I did the math around level 80 and realized it was impossible to hit level 25 and get the medal for that; the most optimistic estimate put me midway through level 24 despite killing almost everything before that point. So I said screw it and just stairdived for the last 15 levels or so. I guess if I want that medal I have to either do it on nightmare or play 666, neither of which sound like a good use of time.

Nightmare! / [N!|AoSh|90%|YAVP] First try on nightmare=first diamond win
« on: March 02, 2019, 17:37 »
Just earned my first diamond badge. Amusingly, this was my very first time playing on nightmare, giving me a 100% win rate on nightmare so far. (Though hunter gold is pretty good practice for Nightmare). Even more amusingly, I wasn't even planning to win at first--I misread gatekeeper platinum and thought it was about level 1, so I started a AoSh run thinking that would be an easy badge. It wasn't until Hell's Armory I realized that A: I might win and B: I was easily maintaining >90% kills.
Overall everything after level 8 was a bit underwhelming. I was expecting to see nightmare enemies and elites everywhere, or at least to see something substantially nastier than what I saw on Hunter Gold. Strategy was basically to, whenever possible, corner shoot and then back up to finish enemies off in a doorway at an angle where recoil wouldn't move them. That plus some barrel pushing was enough for 90% kills even skipping the last level. I had ammo, skulls, medkits and kills to spare. I only even took whizkid to add the Fireshield assembly to my list (by then I had found Jackhammer, which makes the focused double shotgun obsolete).
Then again, maybe everything after Hell's Armory felt underwhelming because that's when I found Jackhammer, and that gun is gamebreaking in AoSh.
Now that I've proved to myself Nightmare isn't so scary, I'm sure I'll be knocking out more platinum and diamond badges in the future. (I already have 5 other platinums but I don't think I'll make forum threads for the older ones).
