Title: Now playing... (games)
Post by: ParaSait on August 23, 2010, 10:02
I thought it would be cool to have a games version of this (http://forum.chaosforge.org/index.php/topic,2647.0.html) topic. :)
So basically whenever you start playing a videogame, post it here.

First of, here's some simple rules...
- to keep it unrepetitive: Only post if you start playing a game for the first time, or it's a long time ago. If you quit playing and the day after you continue, or if you play a daily DoomRL run etc, it doesn't count.
- to keep it moral: Don't post eroge or anything similar. We don't need to know that. :P
- to keep it legal: If the game you start playing is commercial, you can post a link to info and stuff but no illegal download link. If it's free or abandoned, obviously you can link to both.

So now that we cleared that up:

Looking Glass Studios - System Shock (http://www.abandonia.com/en/games/24684/System+Shock.html)

Sega- Yakuza 3 (US version, which is important only because of instead of whining and bitching about cut content and boycotting the game, thus preventing Sega from releasing Yakuza 4, which has gotten a US release that won't cut anything apparently, which I guess is a victory for the douchebags that almost made it impossible in the first place...or being one of THOSE people and importing the game, despite not knowing japanese, just for content that I didn't necessarily enjoy, but I didn't need to play the game and could learn to like with a bit of patience, like Mahjong or Hostess Club dating, I sucked it up and supported Sega, buying the "neutered" version of the game, which still had a lot packed in it. Of course, according to this article, in which the game is reviewed by actual Yakuza (http://www.boingboing.net/2010/08/10/yakuza-3-review.html), even actual Yakuza think Sega USA sucks for cutting it, so make of that what you will.)

What's so special about this mod?
It's a TC. It changes levels, some enemies and weapons. I have a suspicion that some of the levels, weapons and enemies were stolen from other mods.

It's also DAMN difficult.

(edlt) Yeah. Most of the things are stolen from other mods.

(Editagain) Every thing on that mod and the first D2X mod is stolen.

Doom 2 With Doom 2 Extreme (Gold) Mod.

Of course you have an executable (which is now free and legal since it's re-released as open source), but the .deh files allow you to kinda patch the executable so you can get more possibilities out of the classic vanilla Doom engine.
If it comes with it's own complete iwad too which has original, non-commercial material (so not from any official doom wads, which *are* still sold) then it's indeed legal.
Much like FreeDoom, actually.
Title: Re: Now playing... (games)
Post by: Kg on October 14, 2010, 23:37
Check out Zdaemon / Skulltag - online doom with Invasion cooperative type of gameplay - more and more monsters every wave, you unlock new weapons etc. .deh and .wad are legal, but you need 'illegal' doom2.wad to make it run with those clients.
On a side note, I made once .deh file which makes bullet sprite as powerful as RL blast.
Oh sorry.. that was BEX:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZgyNg7m4ep4
I just love how the demon gets pwned at the end.
Note that enemy bullets also hits you as hard as yours. So it's like doom RL (lol) hardcore mode. Maybe idea for a new challenge?

Well true, a lot of adventure games have slipups like that--but the thing I like so much about Chzo Mythos is mainly the deepgoing story and genious atmosphere.
Indeed 5days and 7days had plot holes here and there and things that don't really make sense; luckily these have been cleverly patched in notes and 6days. :)

Owww.  How could you not play the original Doom?  You should at least try it, since it is such an influential game.

You can even run it under the more modern source ports like prboom or vavoom to get more bells and whistles that make it less like that old 90s game and something like a low-end modern FPS.  =D

It's unofficial. ID was gonna make ep7-9 but sadly they never finished it, so a fan decided to continue the series himself. Since ID's 7-9 don't exist, I consider it official enough. :D

For the time being, I've apparently gone insane and decided to poke through the Top 100 Wads of All Time and the Cacowards. All of them. TurboCharged ARCADE is immense fun and does things with Doom I didn't think you could. I've got Scythe and Hell Revealed and Kama Sutra and Speed of Doom to play, not to mention looking for every good Heretic map I can get my hands on...

I don't remember exactly what to do to get it, but I'm pretty sure it's in the pyramid to the east of the last town in the game. I do remember you get it before you need to use the bows to use the second entrance, but I don't remember if it was a chest or a boss fight in the first pyramid.

Well, it is intended. Game events don't have to influence Adam Jensen, the protagonist but you, the player. Personally, I find this solution kicking ass and chewing bubble gum. One step closer to role-playing perfection.

I'm currently playing Triangle Wizard. It's a real-time roguelike (think diablo) with basic dungeon/monsters (graphical ascii'ish) and nice particle effects for spells.

It's addictive as hell, but likes a bit of processing power. It's free and can be found here:
trianglewizard.webs.com (http://trianglewizard.webs.com)
Give it a go, its like the Other DoomRL (just magic-y, not gun-y). Yes, you can circle strafe.

I just got a level 36 familiar (on the first level), 3 level 12 air elementals and 3 level 14 firesprites. As an Efreet Assassin of Ragnaros. It's burny, needly acupuncture time :)

Oh, I'm level 2 on about dungeon level 4 and would get destroyed by any of these summons if they weren't mine. Sometimes the RNG loves you, there's even a god in-game to prove it. Here's a save (zipped for space). Because, as we all know, nothing actually happened without a screenshot or some evidence.

Far too many at the moment, but it seems to be a "thing" with me.

Fallout 3 (heavily modded for an open-ended and slightly roguelike feel - permadeath and 500% mob spawning + rebalanced mobs based on player level)
Fallout 3: New Vegas (first playthrough with all DLC. After that I will mod it to hell and bash some mutant heads)
Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (first playthrough)
Star Wars: The Old Republic (The new MMO from BioWare/EA)

Angband
Brogue
Caves of Qud
DoomRL
Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup
Frozen Depths

Uh, I don't know... permadeath on such long games doesn't really feel too great. Even in ToME I sometimes really dislike it (though I'm actually pro permadeath in general). You explore the world for hours and hours, get somewhere you've never been before, something strange happens and BAM... that's it. And you explore the (structurally same) world again.

Therefore I'm playing smaller roguelikes mostly at the moment: DoomRL of course, as well as all the other ChaosForge titles once again. Some Brogue occasionally. At the same time eagerly awaiting the upcoming Project Zomboid update. ;)

I recently played through Ben Croshaw's 'Chzo Mythos', 4 (mostly) point-and-click adventures that look like they were made around 1990. What starts out as a relatively simple ghost story in '5 Days a Stranger', develops into a brilliant story; something you'd get when crossbreeding HP Lovecraft with a movie like 12 Monkeys. And as an added bonus, I can incorporate Chzo perfectly into the background for a new character for Vampire Dark Ages, for which a new story is going to start a week or two from now.

I don't remember the name of the site the Mythos is posted on, but JayIsGames did a review, so you'll be able to find them there.
Oh and be sure to save often. Death doesn't occur that much, but when it does you probably won't see it coming.

Yes I did beat both Civ1 and Civ2, albeit on low difficulty level (third lowest IIRC). I don't like dirty tricks Civs encourage, so I have to win only fair and square. Still, diplomacy, as in Civ3 so far, helps greatly.

I used to play Civ 1 long before I learnt English and didn't really understand much of the gameplay mechanics.

I was a despot throughout the whole game, I had no idea my treasury was a thing, so I never had any money and every turn some building got sold and I kept building them over and over again, there were riots in almost every city in almost every town etc.

Somehow I always managed to win easily by domination. Years later I decided to play it again, this time knowing all there is to know about the mechanics, I thought long about each move, made the most of my cities and units and... failed miserably every time.

Title: Re: Now playing... (games)
Post by: ih8regin on April 19, 2012, 03:06
I lucked with a russified Civ1 available to me (of course pirated from somewhere, but at that time I wasn't aware what is it, and frankly no legal market existed at 1991 here, especially when it comes to localizations, they are made by enthusiasts and either sold or redistributed for free), so I had an easy time figuring out mechanics. Eventually I migrated to english Civ1, since I had a semi-native knowledge of English thanks to studying it while being 4-5 years old, and some more nice features were rediscovered :)

With Civ2 I started with englishversion at once, and while struggling at first have managed to get a ridiculous 342% rating in a huge game, ending with about a hundred cities and a complete boredom and anticipation at playing this anymore.

Apparently, Civ 3 is regarded as one of the worst versions. At some point the ranking was: 4 > 2 > 3 > 1 when it comes to "gameplay experience".
Then we got 5th Civ ...and the Civ 4 remains as the best one, still :P .

There's a bunch of mods for T2 that totally rebalance the game and may improve your enjoyment of it; I've been playing Synergies most recently.  That, at least, is a feature Diablo 3 cannot offer.

I used to really enjoy titan quest!
I hated diablo 3 though... I've heard it's a lot better since they closed down the auction house, but for diablo games I've always been a fan of ironman diablo 1! Diablo 1 just had such a lonely atmosphere, and my heart identifies with haunting loneliness a lot more than it does with perilous dread!

As for me, I've been absolutely hammering starcraft 2 recently! Back-to-back games for hours on end!
In between those, though, I've been putting a few hours into FTL (now that there's a hard more in the advanced edition), Don't starve, ADOM, and hearthstone.
It feels very good to have kicked my League of Legends addiction once and for all! x

I came to Diablo 3 after RMAH closed so can't comment on how it affected the game myself but a friend of mine that had the game from when it came out said it was, indeed a great improvement. And then patch 2.0 and expansion applied more improvements to go with that - the game is fine...

...the so-called community? Less so. In fact I'd say the official US Diablo 3 forums are downright caustic, with amounts of whine and rage aimed at Blizzard drowning out most of the actually constructive criticism. My (least) favourite topics that come back on and on are variations of "I played for 2000+ hours and I'm bored. Only 2000 hours for $80 game? What a disgrace, the game is crap" and "Blizzard should remake Diablo 2 with new graphics - it'd be next to no effort and would earn them millions!" (suuuuuuure it would). Ugh. I'm not sure why I browse those forums still, must be some form of masochism.

On more positive note I must agree that Diablo 1 is a great game that aged pretty well (*coughunlikediablotwocough*). In fact few months ago I re-played it with help of a mod allowing for windowed play in modern systems (finally!) and a fanmade patch for some of the outstanding bugs and had good time.

Aside from that I decided to dig out Fallout New Vegas... again... and after showing 50+ mods/compatibility patches down it's throat I think it's ready to play \o/

Well the more focus on the gameplay a game is, the greater its effective life it seems.  See also old-school games like chess.  Basic hack-and-slash will never die out -- their interface just keeps morphing to whatever the dominant form is.  But the core idea of a grid-based world stays more or less consistent.

Same reason why rogue-likes are still in existence and are having some kind of a come back these days.

I whole-heartedly agree with this:

Diablo 1 just had such a lonely atmosphere, and my heart identifies with haunting loneliness a lot more than it does with perilous dread!
As for me, I just started up The Lost Vikings and have been marathoning it the last few nights. I feel like it would have been easy as a small child, but my boring adult brain struggles with such puzzly goodness.
As for what I've been playing: Magic, the Gathering, A hone-brew RPG system we call Project Eggo, and, of course, DoomRL, my favorite Roguelike. ;)

Recently I came upon Deus Ex: Human Revolution. The original Deus Ex was awesome, and DX2 was total crap, so I decided to give this installment a shot.

The result? Well, let's put it this way - it's been years since a game hooked so much that I played it the whole night, almost 14 hours straight. That good and that immersive game it is.

If you like some FPS/stealth play combined with a intriguing story, then give it a shot.

That prelude though... ugh.  I hated it.

But once you died and ah got augmented, it gets fun again.  =D

Only one title in the series left to get...

Edit: As a side note. thelaptop, I saw your rig info in another thread and... 32 gigs of ram? The hell, what are you doing with that computer man? My new laptop has eight and two of those spend most of their time twiddling their thumbs. Can't imagine what would need 32 Gb of RAM O_O

Virtual machines, file system buffers, RAM to pre-load databases for calculations, space for large inference networks... so yeah.  Lots of RAM needed.  My rig, when not set up for playing games, is acting as my private compute server using Linux.

Yup.
Computer Scientists could probably use up a TB worth of RAM in a home workstation. When that fails, time to move to the cluster!

...and we're off topic! sorry!

Crusader Kings II and Europa Universalis IV. I'm stuck with these two for two months now and still want more. The export between CKII an EUIV is great way to enhance the gameplay :)

I just finished Legend of Grimrock (https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0CCMQFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fstore.steampowered.com%2Fapp%2F207170%2F&ei=rG8pVNG-A8PjaO6sgNgD&usg=AFQjCNGl9mhz3qnmXybMNneKGYXEycnLAg&sig2=veWO-2ycgEKsv9d-yF-o4w)
Brilliant game, really fun throwback to watching my brother play eye of the beholder on his Amiga! I'd wholeheartedly recommend it!

It's a bit uncanny that you say this, because my older brother has always been into D&D video games and I also have lots of fond memories of watching him play.  Also, I just Googled Eye of the Beholder and was treated to nostalgic remembrance; I wouldn't have remembered the name of the game, but it looks so familiar!  :)  (Grimrock looks cool too)

Wow, looks nice and feels Dungeon-Master-ish. Guess I have to play DM again, and give LoG a shot :).
