Title: Exploit: City of Skulls broken with Ammochain?
Post by: Ashenai on November 04, 2009, 14:43
Simple enough: City of Skulls generates an infinite(?) supply of enemies (lost souls) that are trivial to kill once the level is otherwise pacified. With Ammochain, ammo is not an issue, so you can stay and slaughter them as long as your patience holds out, collecting basically unlimited, risk-free XP.

I suspect a Vampyre build could abuse the place in a similar way.

Simple fix: make the extra level-spawned Lost Souls not give XP, just like the Lost Souls spawned by Pain Elementals.

The only infinite spawned lost souls are thos from PE's. The level spawns only a finite amount by itself. Do no issue ;)

I wonder do you get exp from a painy's LS? Cause if so you could exploit those for unlimited exp if you have Ammochain.

EDIT: Wait heh I didn't read the first post very concentratedly, nvm :P :P

I don't even think you get XP from a LS summoned by a Pain. Even if you did, it's friggin miniscule.

But for experienced grinders (read: people who play Final Fantasy games for WAAY too long - a.k.a. me :P) the miniscule xp would build up. Until the game crashes once you level past clevel 19 :P

You can get past clevel 19 - when you hit clevel 20, the exp reads 20/MAX.

That reminds me of a dialog from a cartoon:
"-Dude, boars are only worth 2 experience points a piece. Do you know how many boars we would have to kill to get up 30 levels?

-Yes. 65,340,285. Which should take us 7 weeks, 5 days, 13 hours, and 20 minutes giving ourselves 3 hours a night to sleep. What do you say, guys? You can just hang outside in the sun all day tossing a ball around. Or you can sit at your computer and do something that matters."

Ah, allright then. I didn't want to stay and test it for long because it was a pretty promising character, and I would have felt dirty about exploiting.

He died later, though :(

Anyway, DoomRL and Crawl are actually my two favourite roguelikes precisely because they're basically unscummable. You really hit a home run with this game, Kornel, kudos. :)
