AliensRL / More Different Aliens Ideas(Beware, some spoilers here)
« on: June 26, 2010, 11:16 »
Just beaten AliensRL 0.8 as a Scout(feeling sightly bad now, after reading Scout is "easy mode" in the game, but...) and, besides liking the game a lot, felt a little bored as the aliens would just repeat themselves. The strategy to fight against them all was: get distance, shoot with pistol, if resist, change to another weapon and keep shooting.
So, some ideas, starting to change some of the aliens that already exists:
a) Worker. Great, resist lots of bullets... but in WHAT exactly does he works? Perhaps he could do some changes in the scenario, opening and closing holes in walls... Good surprise when one of them just destroys a wall and enters in a room...
b) Overseer. The final version of the Drones. Extremely resistant, and that's it. He could organize the attacks of other aliens around him, making them stronger, faster or avoiding being in your field of vision. Of course, all of this if you call his attention...
c) Praetorians. The strongest aliens ever. Of course, you probably know the strongest defense ever against any alien: close the door. Well, and if Praetorians could destroy doors?
And now, new alien's ideas.
a) Eggs. They don't move, has good armor and don't attack, quietly growing... if you gets too close, they starts accelerating the growth process, releasing or a scavenger, or a juvenile, or... see b). Ah, it's rare, but twins can grow out of it too. Usually eggs has drones around them.
b) Deformed. When the accelerating growing process didn't worked well. A deformed is slow, weak but can spit acid in you. Acid does constant small damage for 2-4 turns, and keeps pain at least in -1.
c) Hungers. Aliens that aren't really hungry, but walk around corpses of dead humans to digest and prepare their meat in something proper to eat for the queen and other aliens. Are slow, resistant and can do extreme damage with their fangs and claws. The main problem is that attacking a hunger makes him to call help, calling for lunch time. And aliens in other rooms WILL come to the rescue!
d) Hot-headeds. Aliens that experimented to eat ammo and explosives. As a result, it's somewhat drunk, to the point of attacking other things as beds, walls... unfornately, they explode like a inc grenade, but weaker when take damage.
e) Lashers. Aliens with high HP and a long, prehensible tail, that can use to attack you of a safe distance(3 squares) or to get and throw in you things, dealing damage. If you get too close, they will throw you, so they can be safe.
f) Spitters. Aliens that can, as the deformeds, spit acid. Their acid is stronger than the deformeds in damage.

Started as a scout, focused in Sidearms(more damage with M4A3 Pistol), Fitness(more grenades, be able to outrun some aliens) and Medicine(HEAL!). The start was hard, with hunters and scavengers making mince meat of me, but with some time, Fitness and the newly-found ability to close doors, things became easier.
I usually fought in the Engeneering Tower, then went to the Medical Tower searching for medkits, then went straight to the Security and Military Towers for EXP and ammo, also to check out what i would face in the higher floors. That's how i first met the Elite, Stalker and Praetorian aliens.
To avoid being without ammo, i changed between M4A3(normal pistol), .44(high-damage, but would easily be with low ammo), .12 Combat Shotgun(excellent against lots of small aliens) and M41A Pulse Rifle(horrible without Light Weapons training, awesome with it and at close-range). The Sniper Rifle wasn't that bad, but my M4A3 could do the same job, so haven't used it. The M5 RPG? I don't know, even with training in Heavy Weapons, i prefered always more armor than doing more explosions.
Besides, nothing that a good inc grenade couldn't handle...
...the worse part was close to the final run, when i needed a military key, and had to visit several parts of the Towers in search of one. That said, the most thrilling parts were the start(low ammo, lots of juvenile and scavengers...) and the end, without medkits and searching for them almost dying.
AWESOME GAME! ^^
