Like trying to pick it up without any weapons in your hand? ;P
[/whyamievenposting]
I tried that with the Berserker Armor (actually dropped everything I was carrying first), don't know if it would work any better with DS. Maybe BA needs DS to use or maybe it has it's own trick, no idea.

Yeah, the enemy respawn surprised me as well the first time I tried AoD...

I have a couple of ideas as well, but the only time I came across it was before I even knew it was different from the other uniques. I found it, figured I was missing a required trait or something and only bothered to check the Wiki/forum after I'd died...

Had I known there was some trick to it, I'd have done more experimenting.

Yeah, stuff like this has been discussed for DoomRL 2.

Juggler reduces the time to quick-equip to instant; Z-Swapping and Number-Equipping are therefore instant with Juggler. I do believe (although I could be mistaken) that Number-Equipping draws from the first eligible item in your inventory.

1 - Combat Knife
2 - Pistol
If number-equipping would actually draw from the inventory first, then you could always use 2-z-2 to equip two pistols and 1-z-1 to equip two knives. I checked and currently the second number-equip will just draw from the prepared slot so 2-z-2 will only equip one pistol...

How about a chance to Esc backwards in the selection screens when starting a new game?
  • Difficulty selection <- Class selection
  • Class selection <- Trait selection (skipping past name screen since Esc there just chooses a blank name)

I've lost count of the number of times I've chosen the wrong class by mistake and had to shift-Q the game to fix my error...

Entirely predictable that I'd find a firestorm mod on a run where it's completely pointless, of course...
Tell me about it... So far the only time I've found any special mods (except with Scavenger) was during the time I did speedruns. And of course at that point there were too few levels left to get Whizkid...

...did you just doomify the 12 Days of Christmas?!
On the 12th level of Deimos
DoomRL gave to me
12 berserk packs
11 cyberdemons
10 shambler's shambling
9 barons blasting
8 demons roaring
7 lost souls flying
6 imps a-firing
5 revenants
4 hell knights
3 cacodemons
2 former humans
and a doomguy without BFG

...it was just too silly to resist :D

69
Phew, he's only human after all :D
(I've seen both and managed to wear neither...)

Requests For Features / Weapon comparison made easier
« on: November 08, 2011, 10:47 »
After reading the thread "DoomRL featured on Roguelike Radio", I realized there was one thing mentioned that had been bugging me for some time so I figured I'd make an actual feature request for that so it could be discussed better.

Currently when you find a new weapon, especially when it's something you haven't seen before the first question is naturally "Is this better than what I'm currently using".
You pick up the weapon and the inventory screen shows the damage, fire time, reload time and accuracy for the new weapon.
You open the equipment screen to check the current weapon - damn, it only shows the damage.
You open the character screen and finally see the current weapon stats.
If you want to compare against a weapon in the prepared slot you have to first switch weapons as the character screen only shows the primary weapon.

This is not exactly nice and handy.

Possible ways to fix this:
  • Add a Compare button (for example Tab) to inventory screen. After you would select a weapon using the arrow keys pressing the Compare button would then toggle compare mode so the screen would instead list just the currently selected weapon, the currently equipped weapon and the prepared weapon and show the stats for all of them.
This way you could use one screen to make the comparisons.
  • Instead of the cool ASCII picture in the character screen, add a listing of the currenly carried weapons, armors and boots with the currently equipped stuff on the top. Choosing something from the list would then show how the current stats would change if you changed to the selected weapon/armor/boots and could be colorcoded to show what would improve.
    For example like this:

    ...
    Current fire speed is 1,00 (0,8) second/shot
    Current reload speed is 1,20 (2,00) second/shot
Current to hit chance (point blank) is 90% (95%)
    ...

Again you could use just one screen to make comparisons.
  • One simple improvement would be to just show the prepared weapon stats in the character info screen under the current Weapon rows. This would allow easy comparison of the equipped and prepared weapons.
    ...
    Weapon - pistol (2d4) [6/6]
      fire 1,0s, reload 1,2s, acc +4
    Prepared - shotgun (8d3) [1/1]
      fire 1,0s, reload 1,0s, acc +0

    Armor
    ...
  • Another way would be to add the fire speed, reload speed and accuracy to the equipment screen:
    ...
    [ b ] [ Weapon     ] pistol (2d4) [6/6]  (fs 1,0 rl 1,2 ac +4)
    ...
    [ d ] [ Prepared    ] shotgun (8d3) [1/1] (fs 1,0 rl 1,0 ac +0)
    ...

This would also allow quick comparison between equipped and prepared weapon.

Of course many weapons have special features that this kind of comparison would not show but currently comparing even simple weapons is a bit annoying...

These are just quick ideas so I'm sure someone can think of better ways to make weapon comparisons easier.

I probably don't have enough posts yet to fix these myself:

In the badges page the Arachno Bronze Badge is listed under Silver badges and Arena Silver Badge is listed under Gold badges. The actual requirements look correct so it's just a name error.

Ah. Knowing that would have helped a lot :D

I'll have to remember that the next time I happen to find the gun.

131 brave souls have ventured into Phobos:
 101 of those were killed.
3 of those were killed by something unknown.
3 didn't read the thermonuclear bomb manual.
And 11 couldn't handle the stress and committed a stupid suicide.

 13 souls destroyed the Cyberdemon...
1 sacrificed itself for the good of mankind.
12 killed the bastard and survived.

I'd been fighting my way towards the Captain rank for a long time but the RNG was making it a 'bit' frustrating.
The most amusing failure was in AoP when the game didn't generate ANY green/blue/red armors for the first 8 levels! (I did get a ballistic shield on level 2 but it was soon gone)

I finally won my first HMP game even though the RNG gave me three consecutive arachnotron caves and almost gained the Veteran Silver along with the UAC silver but was finally forced to flee the second to last level because of arch-viles and mancubi.
So I was still one Silver short.

I soon realized getting 4 more medals would give me Heroic silver and looking at the list it even looked just about possible.
I quickly grabbed Explorer and Conqueror on ITYTD and seeing Uranium's example I figured I should be able to get the Compet-n Gold/Platinum next.

I hate speedrunning. I STILL hate speedrunning. It took me about 30 attempts before I finally succeeded and again the RNG decided to play pranks on me. These attempts were the first time I'd even seen Firestorm and Sniper mod packs and naturally there was now no chance to get WK to finally get some of the missing assemblies....
I even got Grammaton Cleric Beretta during one of the attempts and even got to Cybie that time but didn't have enough ammo to finish Cybie with the gun and got killed soon after that. So no Grammaton Cleric Cross either.
Grh.

Finally in this attempt i was lucky enough with the stairs and enemies to get to the end (even though some arch-viles and mancubi played ping pong with me over the last exit stairs). Berserked during the fight and chainsawed Cybie to pieces!

The real surprise came when the game announced I'd made Captain rank. Looks like I had also scored Untouchable Badge thus giving me enough for Heroic Silver!
Hooray!

Looking at the Gold badge list it will be interesting to see if I'll ever be able to reach Major or not.
Technician,Heroic,Strongman,Centurial and Arena seem just about possible, the others not so much :D

Discussion / Re: Berserker / Vampyre Discussion
« on: October 21, 2011, 08:51 »
  • Change the requirements for activation from hit-based to kill-based. Right now we have a system where X hits will activate the effect, which is at a maximum of four and becomes less with more enemies in sight. Personally I think kill-based (that is, kill something and it activates) is simpler to understand and easier to consider when faced with a tactical decision.
Nooo...
If you could only activate berserk by killing something I still wouldn't have any melee victories as I always lost the previous berserk way before getting to Cybie and it reactivated during the final battle...

75
In my opinion, a melee build should be among the hardest out there, in a game where practically all of the fighting is done at a distance.
Heh, I found it much easier to get Sunrise Iron Fist, Malicious Knives Cross and Pacifism Gold than getting Marksman Silver and I didn't even do any 'lost soul farming'....
Granted, I'm playing at HNTR and it could be that I'm just better at melee tactics.

But damn, that row of diamonds is just impressive!
