Post Mortem / [E|100%|YAAM] First Full Win!
« on: April 17, 2013, 22:03 »
Greetings, everyone. I'm Lone Wolf, and I've been playing DoomRL since not too long ago. I think I was still in the early versions of 0.9.9, in console mode. I had stopped playing a while ago, then decided to get it back on this computer since, hey, I love the game, right?

First, I have to say I was surprised to see the addition of graphics (which are tasty, by the way), and I had alot of fun playing all the games up until now. I've been dabbling about with mods, and I picked up Elevator of Dimensions, just for the lulz. So I crank it up, Console mode (which took again some adaptation time since I was already used to graphics), then boot up the Elevator mod. First things first, I noticed it had begun the very same way, but I went 'meh'. I keep up doing the game, saving twice since I had to go away both times.

I can always reliably go through the Phobos Hellgate (though those damn Bruiser Brothers get on my nerves, all the time), and I eventually die in Deimos, mid-way through. So it was my surprise that the RNG Gods decided to smile on me with awesome drops and lots of Invulns. Beat Cybie, went through Hell, beat the Lava Pits for the Lava Element, nuked Mastermind, and went up against JC. I was literally on edge during JC, and I'll explain why after I show the mortem, along with my other comments.

Though I have to say I know that this isn't much, for you guys with U or N! Post-Mortems, but hey, was fun anyway.

One last thing: The reason why I'm posting this post mortem, is that while I am completely convinced I was playing a mod, it still booted me up to the rank of Sergeant, considering I had new medals in the bag. So if anyone can confirm if I went regular or EoD, I'd like it much.

Comments on the run:

Build: Since I wasn't sure what I was going to see and play, I decided to follow through with the suggestion of going MAD. Rel 2 and SM made it so that the little shotgun I received in the beginning was completely lethal, and actually helped me along the earlier levels to zoom along, while completely wiping the floors one by one (One thing I always do is, as a matter of fact, DESTROY EVERYTHING. Gimme my XP you little...). Then, afterwards, I decided to go with Bad 2 because normally, when I go with SM, I suddenly shift to another semi-build, and this time, I wanted to go through with it (also, 200% HP is not something to spit on). Getting MAD, though, was one major boost- I had Double Shotgun and Combat Shotgun, so I could cornershoot with the Combat Shotty when I knew demons were there, else I could wander around with my Double Shotty and get the drop on them enemies. Afterwards, I knew I needed more damage, hence the SoB 3. Last level, I had no interesting things to pick, which is why I went with Iro. I could've gone TaN, but one point of protection vs 10 HP (20 effective with 200% HP)? I prefer my health.

Equipment: The first levels were pretty much Shotgun only, keeping the pistol only for bare necessities (which I didn't even end up using save from Phobos Base Entry). I found a Double Shotgun later on, and then I knew I was going to be rolling HARD. I kick lots of demon bums, keeping an eye out for EVERY SINGLE SHELL (I had dropped my Chaingun, Pistol and all 10mm Ammo pretty much as soon as I got my Double). I used the Chainsaw for obligatory Berserk effect, then I dumped it when I needed space (which, in hindsight, was a small error). Eventually, I got my Combat Shotty, which was my main weapon against the Bruisers and the rest, until Level 10, when I got my mods to get the Tactical Shotgun. At one point, I had a Red Armor and some Protective Boots, and way too many mods, so I decided to pump some things up (including wasting Bulk Mods on Armor and getting them either destroyed or dumped for space). I picked up a Plasma Rifle along the way, as a 'just in case', as well as a rocket launcher, since I wanted either The Wall or Containment Area for that yummy backpack. As soon as I had the Missile Launcher, though, I threw away the Rocket Launcher, but I eventually dumped it in favor of space for Power Cells. On Level 14, I was surprised to find the Cybernetic Armor, since I had gotten that only once before, and I knew that if I equipped it, I could get screwed since it sticks around. I kept it on my inventory until the very end, where you see me using it. At the time, I was using a Bulk Red Armor, which changed into a Phaseshift Armor later on. Got my BFG 9000 from the Spider's Lair, and since I didn't have a Bulk Mod, I couldn't use it as an Ammo Dump. I kept it around (glad I did) anyway. After Cybie, things kept on a roll, getting a Thermonuclear Bomb near the 20ies, getting more ammo for the rifles and shotgun, though mostly for the rifle because I had run out of shells at one point. I was shaking when that happened. Though, I was lucky on level... 22? 23? when I spawned right next to a group of Arch-Viles and Former Humans/Sergeants. I didn't let the Arch-Viles raise alot of corpses, since I did have a knee-jerk reaction of 'KILL 'EM ALL', but I managed to retrieve 3+ stacks of 70 Shells, allowing me to resume shotgunning. Lava Pits gave me Nyarlaptotep's Boots, which I equipped as soon as I got it. Go down to Dis, nuke Mastermind, go down to JC. Then, I began unloading my trusty Tactical, but seeing the enemies pile up, I decided to play it all-in; Overcharged my BFG 9000, fired, lost my Phaseshift, equipped Cybernetic and HP Plasma Rifle, and fired one final salvo. I spent the whole game with MAD, only to finish with a Rapid-Fire weapon. I'm weird.

Level Commentaries:
- Hell's Arena:
It was easier with the Shotgun to do, considering I had only Lost Souls, Demons and Cacodemons. Used alot of cornershooting, got a lucky level which gave me Rel 2, and with that, Demons weren't a nuisance anymore. Now that I remember, I didn't even pick the Rocket Launcher from the final reward.

- Chained Court:
After getting the chainsaw, I just went all out and destroyed everything on my path, returning only once for another Berserk Pack, since EVERYTHING had moved towards me. The Arena Master was an easy kill, and the former humans were a joke, even after my Berserk faded. Got my mods, and got out.

- Military Base:
Where I got my Combat Shotgun, and LOTS of ammo. It was easy to do, since I had at least one level of Badass at that point. I never dropped below 80% HP. I also picked up the Plasma Rifle there from the Commando. The left part (with the stairs) are always my first cleared area, doing a round-about of the area before entering the center room, and clearing it up. After I do that, right-side room was easy, with corner shooting. I actually had to use the Tracking Map since some stragglers hid well. I left there with a hefty amount of shells.

- Phobos Anomaly:
Damn Bruisers. Anyway, my tactic is always the same- zoom through the first areas (since I had no enemies in the beginning, it was easier said than done), then go until the walls drop down. At that point, I run all the way back to the final door, move down, close it, get ready if I need to reload, then wait. I actually waited until the Bruisers opened the door (which wasn't a good idea in hindsight), and I got pelted with Hellfire. At that point, I unloaded Double Shotgun blasts at near-point-blank, and finished up with Combat Shotty, netting me the win on that part.

- Containment Area:
I was happy to have kept my Rocket Launcher up until there. I went to use it in the middle part, and when I moved to see better, I saw it reload. I had forgotten SM reloaded Rockets too. So I blow my way to kingdom come, kill the demons and imps, and nab the Missile Launcher. Then, I go onwards to the Backpack, and that's where I began to shake a bit- I was unlucky enough to have 5 Hell Knights spawn near the entrance. Tactical Shotty was a life-saver, since I didn't have to pump or move. I unleashed like, a STORM of shells on 'em. When the first wave was down, I went to get the Backpack, then wandered out to finish the rest. All in all, aside from some small medkits, I went out without too much damage.

- Spider's Lair:
Damn Arachnotrons. I hate them with a passion. The level itself was tricky. I teleported quickly, and used the corners to my advantage, though I got the enemy drop in on me several times. I healed two or three times, and finished the level. Nabbed the goddarn BFG 9000, and I flipped the finger at those damn spiders. I'm arachnophobiac, so it was satisfying to kill 'em all!

- Tower of Babel:
I had a lucky Invuln on Level 15, so I waited until the end of Level 15 before taking it and going up against Cybie. The fight was a cakewalk, all in all- rushed in with Invuln and Tactical, unloaded two or three full clips, and changed to Double to finish him off. I killed Cybie like.... two times official? (I killed him lots in Tourist Mod.) It made for a satisfying revenge for all the times he splat'd me.

- Lava Pits:
The whole and sole reason I say the RNG Gods smiled at me. I did NOT have any Lava proof boots. Level 21 had another Invuln, so I used it to clear up most of the level. I was lucky enough to find Enviromental Packs, so I could finish the level and get out safely (did not have Homing Phase Device). Going against the Lava Elemental, though, I admit I was stupid. I charged him upfront and blasted him with a shotty, on the first joint islands. He totally destroyed the island I was on (thank god for E Packs), and gave me a fair bit of damage (IIRC I finished at 56% Health, all the way down from 200%) before I slaughtered him and claimed my goddarn Lava Element.

- City of Dis:
Move around a bit, forgetting to nuke. Realise I can nuke. Set down nuke. Wait until 1 Second. Use Lava Element. Laugh and cheer. Explore, then go down. (BTW, can anyone tell me what the second lever of that level does?)

- Hell Fortress:
The big bad boss in the big bad final battle. At that point, I went in with the Tactical and Phaseshift. Began unloading shells (he was using short-ranged teleportation, never really leaving my range), until he spawns 8 Cacos (easily killed by him and me), then 8 Hell Knights, 8 Barons of Hell- wait, I said 8? I meant *16*. At that point, I was screwed- I was getting low on Medkits, and the shotguns could never do the work enough. I overcharged my BFG9000, and had to suffer another turn of hellfire thrown at me so I could aim directly at JC before firing. I managed to kill most of the Knights and Barons, and I switched to the HP Plasma Rifle to end it. I didn't think I'd end it with one burst, though I did do (1d9+3)x6...

All in all, it was a very satisfying run, and I'm still wondering if it was mod-buisness or regular games. Then again, the medals and badges I gained are there on my Player Info.
